Chapter 2

They both walked behind her as she showed them around the company. She was telling them everything in detail about the ins and outs of it. And they listened to her carefully and nodded their heads only asking a few questions in between.

“How is your father, Miss Fletcher?” Mr. Davis asked all of a sudden.

Darcy was taken aback as to why he would ask about his father all of a sudden but answered his question. “Well, my dad is doing well. Do you know him?”

“No, but I have heard a lot about him from my dad. It seems they were childhood friends. His eyes were looking around observing everything very keenly.

“That’s a surprise, Is your father from around here? May I know your father’s name so that I can ask him if he is acquainted with him?” She asked curiously.

“You will soon know him, don’t be so curious Miss Fletcher and when he comes over I will personally take him to your house to see him. I hope you don’t mind.”

Darcy smiled a spoke happily. “Why would I? If they are old friends then it would be good for him as he has become quite lonely after my mother’s death last year and he hardly goes out and if he meets his old friends it would be therapeutic.”

“Good, even I want my dad to meet his old friends. So you must know the places around here well? Since you have been born and brought up here?”

Darcy smiled and said. “ Yes, I know every detail about this city. Apart from going abroad for my studies for a few years, I have lived here all my life. My great-grandfather built this company and had been passed down to three generations as a legacy to his children but now everything is over. I have to sell the company before it's auctioned,”

There was silence for a while.

“You don’t have anyone who could take over the company and carry on the legacy.” He asked.

“Well my brother is very young and he had his own dreams he had to pursue, so he went abroad and so you see there is no one to carry on the legacy," Darcy said with sadness in her voice.

“But I heard he is the only son in the family, why would he not care about it?” Mr. Davis asked curiously.

Darcy was embarrassed and looked away from his probing gaze. “My brother never cared about the company. He tried his level best to learn everything from scratch but he failed miserably. And we need a lot of finance to reestablish everything and we are already in heavy debt, so my father decided to sell it away.”

“But I can see that you are not willing to sell it, Miss Fletcher.” He said it very frankly.

“Of course, I don’t want to.” She said helplessly. “But I have to think about my father and I have already sold our ancestral home to a complete stranger who has a lot of money, so I don’t think it would matter.

“So are you regretting, after selling it off?”

Darcy looked at him for a second and said. “I simply don’t like that man because I think he is flaunting his money way too much.”

“I feel bad for that guy. By the way, who is he?” He asked her with a slight smile on his face.

Darcy looked at him curiously. “He is none other than the most talked about man in the city right now, Billionaire Gale Harris. And why would you feel bad for him.”

“It seems you are against him moving to Michigan, Miss Fletcher.” He said flatly.

“No it’s not like that, in fact, I think it’s for the better that he is shifting to Michigan, as it will bring more employment opportunities but I just don’t like the way he is splashing his money and showing his power. If it goes like this then he will own the whole of Michigan someday.” Darcy retorted.

“But you should be happy Miss Fletcher he is doing so much for the city, a city which is dying. Doesn’t it also show that he is a very generous man?” He asked.

“Well, you are right, he is.” Darcy agreed reluctantly. “But he will find it difficult to work with old employees who have been following the old traditional methods.”

“Well I am sure, he will think of something because as a leader he has to look at all the cons and proses of the company." He suggested and met her defiant eyes. “Well now that I have seen your company. I will make a decision soon and inform you, Miss Fletcher, please wait for my final decision. It’s getting late I need to head back to my office, so please excuse me.”

He said and strode back towards the exit with his assistant who had not uttered a single during their conversation.

Darcy followed behind them till the exit.

“Well, goodbye, Miss Fletcher. We will meet again. And please don’t worry about Mr. Gale Harris; I think he is trying to give what he can to the city which once belonged to his ancestors.”

Darcy watched as the car drove out of the company and stood there for a long time recalling the conversation they had.

She was about to go inside and get her purse before she went back home when saw another car driving inside the company.  It looked very familiar and when she saw it coming nearer, she caught a glimpse of the driver and knew it was Melvin Baker.

His car came to a halt in front of her and he came out gracefully looking all handsome and groomed up in his dark business suit. Darcy smiled at him as she had known him all her life and had always admired him but today there seems to be something lacking in him. And she knew that there was nothing except that she was making a comparison between him and Mr. Davis, who had just left. Darcy shook her head in annoyance, what was she thinking she had just met the guy and was comparing him with Melvin. She must be mad.
