"If you tell me the contract is gone, I will burn this building down myself."

Amelia Hart didn’t care that every head in the design studio turned to face her. She didn’t care about the startled look on her assistant's face, or the fact that her knuckles were turning stark white around the edge of her tablet. Seven years of brutal, exhausting, sleep-deprived work had led to this single morning.

"Amelia, calm down," David, her managing partner, said, raising his hands in a soothing gesture as he closed the glass door to his office. "No one is burning anything down. The board at Blackwood Enterprises just finished reviewing the final shortlists."

"And?" Amelia stepped closer, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "The redevelopment contract for the Waterfront District. Did we get it or not?"

David let out a breath, a slow, wide smile breaking across his face. "We got it. The whole thing. Interior architecture, luxury concept designs, execution. It’s a forty-million-dollar deal, Amelia. We beat out every veteran firm in Blackwood Heights."

For a second, the room seemed to spin. High-society Blackwood Heights was a fortress built on old money, family legacies, and corrupt bloodlines. Growing up as a housekeeper's daughter on the fringe of that world, Amelia was never supposed to step inside its halls as a peer. But she had carved her way up from nothing, piece by piece, refusing to let her background define her.

"We did it," she whispered, a sudden wave of euphoria washing over her. "We actually did it."

"You did it," David corrected, handing her a sleek dark folder stamped with a silver seal. "Your modern, industrial-meets-classic concept was the only thing that caught their lead executive's eye. But you need to move fast. The official signing and project launch meeting is in twenty minutes at Blackwood Towers."

"Twenty minutes?" Amelia grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair. "I can make it in ten."

She practically flew out of the office, her mind racing with the possibilities. This contract meant total financial security. It meant a permanent safety net for her mother, Rose, whose failing health had kept Amelia awake for countless nights worrying about rent and medical bills. This was her victory. She had survived Blackwood Heights, and now she was going to conquer it on her own terms.

Ten minutes later, Amelia was striding through the towering glass doors of Blackwood Towers. The lobby was a monument to excessive wealth—floors made of polished black marble, soaring ceilings, and security guards stationed like statues at every turn.

She stepped into the high-speed executive elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. Just as the doors began to slide shut, a junior associate in a tailored suit slipped inside, clutching a stack of files.

The associate glanced at Amelia's visitor badge and winced slightly. "First time presenting to the executive board?"

"First time signing," Amelia said smoothly, keeping her voice composed.

"Good luck," the associate muttered, shaking his head. "You're going to need it today. The board isn't running the show on this project anymore. The old man stepped down last night."

Amelia’s eyes narrowed. "Richard Blackwood stepped down?"

"Effective this morning. The heir returned from overseas over the weekend to take over as chief executive. He’s running the entire redevelopment personally." The associate shivered and adjusted his tie. "Word is, he’s an absolute monster. Demoted two vice presidents before breakfast and fired the head of logistics for being three minutes late to a briefing. Don't look him in the eye unless you have to."

The elevator chimed, announcing their arrival at the penthouse level. The doors slid open to reveal a carpeted hallway lined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the entire city.

Amelia pushed the associate's warning to the back of her mind. She wasn't an employee looking to keep her job; she was an independent lead contractor who had earned her place at the table through pure talent. No arrogant corporate heir was going to intimidate her.

She straightened her shoulders, smoothed down the lapels of her dark green blazer, and walked toward the double mahogany doors of the primary boardroom.

She grabbed the heavy silver handle, pushed the door open, and stepped into the room.

"Good morning," Amelia announced, her voice firm, clear, and ringing with absolute confidence. "I’m Amelia Hart, lead designer for—"

The words froze in her throat.

The long conference table was empty except for a single figure sitting at the far end, framed by the blinding morning light pouring through the windows behind him.

At the sound of her voice, the high-backed leather chair spun slowly around.

Amelia’s breath caught, the air suddenly pulled straight from her lungs.

A man sat there, leaning back with careless, terrifying authority. Broad shoulders filled out a dark, bespoke suit. His jawline was sharp, carved from marble, and his dark hair was styled with effortless precision. But it was his eyes that stopped her heart—piercing, icy gray, devoid of any warmth.

Seven years vanished in a single, agonizing second.

The polished boardroom disappeared, replaced by memories of cruel taunts, humiliated childhood tears, and the boy who had made it his personal mission to remind her that she was nothing more than the servant's daughter.

He was older. He was colder. But there was no mistaking him.

Adrian Blackwood looked up from his tablet, his icy gaze locking onto hers. A slow, dangerous smile curved the corner of his lips.

"Hello, Amelia," Adrian said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that sent a violent chill straight down her spine. "You're late."

Amelia forgot how to breathe. The world narrowed to the man sitting in the leather backseat of Victoria Blackwood’s car. The graying hair at his temples was new. The expensive, tailored suit looked unnatural on his frame. But the soft brown eyes—the eyes that used to crinkle at the corners when he read her bedtime stories—were entirely unmistakable."Dad?"The word torn from her throat was a fragile, bleeding thing.Daniel Hart flinched as if she had struck him. He opened his mouth, his face pale and hollow, but Victoria reached out a gloved hand and gently laid it on his forearm. The gesture looked almost affectionate, but the underlying threat was crystal clear."Drive, Charles," Victoria ordered smoothly, not taking her eyes off Amelia."Wait! Dad, stop!" Amelia threw herself forward, her hands slamming against the tinted glass of the window. "Dad, look at me! Please!"The engine roared. The heavy tires kicked up gravel, spraying dust across her shoes as the sedan accelerated down

"Hide."The word was a barely audible, frantic breath against Amelia’s ear. Before she could react, Adrian grabbed her by the waist and pulled her deep into the shadow of the rearmost bookshelf on the gallery walk, shielding her completely with his broad frame. The rhythmic *thwack-step, thwack-step* of Richard Blackwood’s cane echoed off the high mahogany walls below.Amelia held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast. She was pressed flat against the cold wood of the shelving unit, the red personnel file clutched against her chest. Adrian stood inches from her, his arm stretched to grip the high shelf above her head, sealing her in the dark nook."Adrian?" Richard’s booming, gravelly voice cut through the heavy silence of the library. "I know you're in here. Your mother said you brought that Hart girl to my house."Adrian took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down his white dress shirt with his free hand before stepping out into the open gallery, resting

"Give it to me, Amelia."Adrian’s voice was no longer a soft, ragged murmur. It was the sharp, commanding bark of a CEO managing a catastrophic corporate leak. His hand shot out, his long fingers clamping tightly around the edge of the red folder."Get your hands off it!" Amelia screamed, ripping the file backward with so much force the heavy cardstock tore slightly in his grip. She scrambled backward along the narrow upper gallery, putting the heavy wooden reading pedestal between them. Her chest heaved, her heart thrashing against her ribs so violently she thought it might shatter them. She clutched the file to her chest like a shield, her eyes wide and wild."Amelia, you do not know what you are looking at," Adrian warned. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, holding his hands up as if trying to calm a cornered animal. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his eyes a stark, terrifying silver. "That is a classified personnel document. Hand it to me.""It’s a

The air inside the Blackwood Estate tasted exactly as Amelia remembered: lemon polish, crushed velvet, and suffocating silence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing out the crisp morning air and trapping her inside a mausoleum of her worst childhood memories. The grand foyer stretched out before her, a sprawling expanse of black and white checkered marble illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.Fourteen years ago, she had spent an entire Saturday watching her mother scrub every single one of those marble tiles on her hands and knees until her knuckles bled.Amelia swallowed hard, fighting the sudden, violent nausea twisting in her gut. She dug her fingernails into her palms, anchoring herself to the present.Adrian walked past her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick Persian runner. He shed his charcoal overcoat, tossing it carelessly over the back of a priceless antique chair, and began unbuttoning his suit jacket."The staff has the morning off," Adrian s

"Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped smoothly in front of Amelia. The subtle shift in his posture was instantaneous—a shield built from broad shoulders and tailored wool. "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the country club until evening."Victoria Blackwood slowly descended the marble steps, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She ignored her son entirely, her sharp blue eyes pinned to Amelia with the cold detachment of a scientist examining a specimen beneath a microscope."I live here, darling," Victoria said smoothly, stopping two steps above them so she could look down at Amelia. "Unlike some people, who seem to have forgotten their place."Amelia felt the blood rush to her face, a familiar, humiliating heat that threatened to consume her. But as she looked up at the woman who had spent years treating her mother like dirt, something inside her snapped into place. She was no longer a frightened child hiding in the estate

Amelia couldn't breathe. Her mind went completely blank, short-circuiting under the sudden, suffocating weight of his proximity. The heat radiating off Adrian’s body was a stark contrast to the freezing warehouse air. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against her own chest, a frantic rhythm that perfectly mirrored hers."What did she cost him?"The question echoed in her mind, making absolutely no sense. He was the one who had taken everything from her—her childhood innocence, her sense of safety, her belief that hard work mattered more than a bloodline.Yet, looking up into his storm-gray eyes, she saw something shattered. It was a raw, bleeding vulnerability that terrified her far more than his anger ever could. For one terrifying second, her gaze dropped to his lips. Her body, betraying every logical instinct she possessed, leaned infinitely closer.Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes darkened, his gaze dropping to her mouth. The spell broke.Panic seized Amelia. She
