"You were supposed to be gone."

The words slipped from Amelia’s lips before she could stop them. They sounded hollow in the cavernous boardroom, barely more than a breathless whisper, but in the dead silence of the penthouse suite, they might as well have been a gunshot.

Adrian Blackwood didn’t flinch. He didn’t even blink. He set his tablet flat on the mahogany table and folded his hands, watching her with a terrifying, predatory calm.

"And yet, here I am," he replied. His voice was entirely different from the mocking teenage sneer she remembered. It was deeper, richer, and layered with the absolute authority of a man who owned everything he looked at—including her.

Panic, sharp and cold, flooded Amelia’s veins. Her fingers tightened around her dark green folder so hard her nails dug into the leather. She fought the urge to take a step back toward the door.

"No", she told herself frantically. "Do not let him see you sweat."

She had spent seven years scrubbing the mud of the Blackwood Estate off her shoes. She had built a career, a reputation, and a life entirely independent of the toxic world of Blackwood Heights. She wasn't the housekeeper's fragile daughter anymore, and she refused to revert to that terrified girl just because Adrian had inherited a suit and a title.

"Where is the board?" Amelia demanded, forcing her chin up. She marched forward, refusing to let her heels falter on the polished floor. "I was told I was meeting with the executive committee to finalize the Waterfront District contracts."

"The board answers to me," Adrian said, his gaze tracking her every movement. "And I dismissed them. I prefer to evaluate my contractors personally before I hand them forty million dollars of my family’s money."

He reached out, tapping a thick, leather-bound file on the table. It had her design firm's logo embossed on the front.

"Your portfolio is technically competent," Adrian continued, his tone shifting into something flawlessly, violently professional. He flipped open the cover, not looking at her. "The structural flow is adequate. But the execution is... safe. Pedestrian. It lacks the legacy vision required for a Blackwood property."

Amelia felt the blood rush to her face. The humiliation was instantaneous, a perfect echo of the boy who used to kick dirt onto her shoes and mock her discount-store dresses. Only now, he wasn’t attacking her clothes; he was attacking her life’s work.

"Safe?" Amelia practically spat the word. The paralyzing shock was quickly burning away, replaced by a white-hot, familiar fury. "That 'safe' design beat out twelve of the most prestigious firms in the country. The committee unanimously selected my concept because it breathes actual life into the district, rather than just erecting another soulless monument to your family's ego."

Adrian finally looked up. A muscle feathered in his jaw, the only sign that her words had landed.

Before he could respond, the heavy boardroom doors swung open. A nervous-looking executive assistant hurried in, carrying a silver tray with a crystal carafe of water and two glasses. The assistant didn't dare look at Adrian, hurriedly setting the tray down near the center of the table.

"The, uh, the legal team has the final contracts ready for your signature, Mr. Blackwood," the assistant stammered, backing away toward the door. "Whenever you are ready."

"Leave them on my desk. And do not interrupt us again," Adrian ordered softly.

"Yes, sir." The assistant practically fled, the heavy mahogany doors clicking firmly shut behind him.

The click of the latch echoed through the room like a prison cell locking.

The corporate illusion vanished in an instant. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees, thickening with an electric, suffocating tension.

Adrian didn’t look at the files anymore. He slowly stood up, unbuttoning the suit jacket that strained across his broad chest. He was taller than she remembered—much taller. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace as he walked around the edge of the long table, closing the distance between them.

Amelia’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, but she stood her ground. She locked her knees, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her retreat.

He stopped less than a foot away. He was so close she could smell the crisp, expensive scent of cedar and bergamot radiating off him. He looked down at her, his icy gray eyes stripping away her professional blazer, her title, and her hard-won confidence until there was nothing left but the raw, bleeding history between them.

Adrian leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as he dropped his voice to a lethal, velvet whisper.

"Did you really think I wouldn't recognize you, little mouse?"

"Give it to me, Amelia."Adrian’s voice was no longer a soft, ragged murmur. It was the sharp, commanding bark of a CEO managing a catastrophic corporate leak. His hand shot out, his long fingers clamping tightly around the edge of the red folder."Get your hands off it!" Amelia screamed, ripping the file backward with so much force the heavy cardstock tore slightly in his grip. She scrambled backward along the narrow upper gallery, putting the heavy wooden reading pedestal between them. Her chest heaved, her heart thrashing against her ribs so violently she thought it might shatter them. She clutched the file to her chest like a shield, her eyes wide and wild."Amelia, you do not know what you are looking at," Adrian warned. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, holding his hands up as if trying to calm a cornered animal. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his eyes a stark, terrifying silver. "That is a classified personnel document. Hand it to me.""It’s a

The air inside the Blackwood Estate tasted exactly as Amelia remembered: lemon polish, crushed velvet, and suffocating silence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing out the crisp morning air and trapping her inside a mausoleum of her worst childhood memories. The grand foyer stretched out before her, a sprawling expanse of black and white checkered marble illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.Fourteen years ago, she had spent an entire Saturday watching her mother scrub every single one of those marble tiles on her hands and knees until her knuckles bled.Amelia swallowed hard, fighting the sudden, violent nausea twisting in her gut. She dug her fingernails into her palms, anchoring herself to the present.Adrian walked past her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick Persian runner. He shed his charcoal overcoat, tossing it carelessly over the back of a priceless antique chair, and began unbuttoning his suit jacket."The staff has the morning off," Adrian s

"Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped smoothly in front of Amelia. The subtle shift in his posture was instantaneous—a shield built from broad shoulders and tailored wool. "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the country club until evening."Victoria Blackwood slowly descended the marble steps, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She ignored her son entirely, her sharp blue eyes pinned to Amelia with the cold detachment of a scientist examining a specimen beneath a microscope."I live here, darling," Victoria said smoothly, stopping two steps above them so she could look down at Amelia. "Unlike some people, who seem to have forgotten their place."Amelia felt the blood rush to her face, a familiar, humiliating heat that threatened to consume her. But as she looked up at the woman who had spent years treating her mother like dirt, something inside her snapped into place. She was no longer a frightened child hiding in the estate

Amelia couldn't breathe. Her mind went completely blank, short-circuiting under the sudden, suffocating weight of his proximity. The heat radiating off Adrian’s body was a stark contrast to the freezing warehouse air. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against her own chest, a frantic rhythm that perfectly mirrored hers."What did she cost him?"The question echoed in her mind, making absolutely no sense. He was the one who had taken everything from her—her childhood innocence, her sense of safety, her belief that hard work mattered more than a bloodline.Yet, looking up into his storm-gray eyes, she saw something shattered. It was a raw, bleeding vulnerability that terrified her far more than his anger ever could. For one terrifying second, her gaze dropped to his lips. Her body, betraying every logical instinct she possessed, leaned infinitely closer.Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes darkened, his gaze dropping to her mouth. The spell broke.Panic seized Amelia. She

"Tear it down. Every single wall. Now."The deafening crunch of a sledgehammer violently shattering drywall echoed through the hollowed-out warehouse of the Waterfront District. Plaster rained down, and a thick cloud of white dust billowed into the freezing morning air.Amelia froze just inside the entrance, her coffee slipping from her hand and splattering across the concrete floor. It was 6:05 AM. The site was supposed to be empty except for the two of them. Instead, a full demolition crew was actively destroying the scaled mock-up of the central atrium—a physical model it had taken her team three weeks to build.Standing amidst the debris, looking entirely untouched by the dust in a tailored charcoal overcoat and leather gloves, was Adrian."Stop!" Amelia screamed, sprinting across the uneven floorboards, ignoring the danger in her high-heeled boots. "Stop the crew right now!"The foreman lowered his sledgehammer, looking nervously between Amelia and the billionaire who was signing

"I would rather starve in the streets than work for a Blackwood."Amelia stepped back so sharply her heel caught on the edge of the thick carpet, but she kept her balance, her chest heaving as she glared at him. The nickname—"little mouse"—tore through her carefully constructed armor, exposing the raw, bleeding nerve of her childhood.Adrian didn’t pursue her. He stood exactly where he was, his hands casually slipping into his trouser pockets. He looked entirely unbothered by her fury, which only made the fire in her veins burn hotter."Don't flatter yourself," Amelia snapped, her voice trembling with a potent mixture of rage and adrenaline. "I didn't come here for you. I came here for a contract. But if this is how Blackwood Enterprises operates now—playing mind games instead of doing business—then you can find another firm to stroke your ego. I'm done."She turned on her heel, her hand reaching for the heavy silver handle of the boardroom door."Walk out that door, Amelia," Adrian s
