Maya woke up to the sound of rain and the solid warmth of Noah still pressed against her back.

For a few seconds she didn’t move. His arm was heavy across her waist, one of his legs slotted between hers, his breath slow and even against the back of her neck. The sheet was tangled around them. Somewhere beyond the sliding door, rain tapped steadily against the balcony railing.

She should have felt trapped.

Instead she felt safe in a way that scared her more than anything else.

Noah’s voice came rough with sleep. “You’re awake.”

“How can you tell?”

“Your breathing changed.” His arm tightened, pulling her more firmly against him. “You always do that when you start overthinking.”

Maya stared at the wall. “Maybe you should stop paying such close attention.”

“Not a chance.”

He pressed a slow kiss to the back of her shoulder, then another higher up, near the side of her neck. The simple affection made her stomach flip. She felt him harden gradually against the curve of her ass, but he didn’t push for anything. He just held her and kept pressing those unhurried kisses to her skin like they had nowhere else to be.

Eventually Maya rolled over to face him. Noah’s hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. He looked younger like this. Softer.

“Hi,” he said quietly.

“Hi.”

He brushed a strand of hair out of her face, fingers lingering at her temple. The tenderness in the gesture made her throat tighten. Maya leaned in and kissed him before she could talk herself out of it.

What started slow turned deeper fast. Noah made a low sound and rolled her under him, settling between her thighs. He was already hard, already rocking against her through the thin barrier of his boxers and her underwear. Maya arched up to meet him.

They didn’t rush.

Noah took his time stripping her shirt off, then her underwear, then his own. He kissed his way down her body, lingering on her breasts, her stomach, the sensitive skin of her inner thighs, until she was restless and reaching for him. When he finally rolled on a condom and pushed into her, it was slow and deep and devastatingly controlled.

He kept his eyes on hers the whole time.

Every stroke was measured. Every shift of his hips deliberate. One of his hands stayed laced with hers against the mattress. The other cupped her face like she might disappear if he wasn’t careful. The rain kept falling outside. The only other sounds were their breathing and the soft, wet slide of him moving inside her.

Maya came first, quiet and shaking, face pressed to the side of his neck. Noah followed a minute later with a low groan of her name, hips stuttering as he buried himself deep.

Afterward he didn’t pull away right away. He stayed inside her, weight carefully braced, and kissed her temple, her cheekbone, the corner of her mouth. Maya hated how much she liked it. She hated how much she wanted him to stay exactly where he was.

Eventually Noah eased out and dealt with the condom. When he came back he pulled her against his chest again without asking.

“Rain’s not stopping anytime soon,” he murmured against her hair. “I’m making breakfast.”

Maya’s first instinct was to tell him he didn’t have to. The words never made it out.

She watched him pull on his boxers and move around her still-half-unpacked kitchen like he’d done it a hundred times. He found the eggs she’d bought two days ago. He found the last of the bread. He made coffee the proper way instead of the instant she usually settled for.

They ate sitting on the mattress because she still didn’t own a table.

Noah kept glancing at her over the rim of his mug like he was waiting for her to bolt. Maya kept waiting for the panic to hit the way it usually did after they got too close.

It stayed quiet.

After breakfast he didn’t leave. Maya opened her laptop to work on a client logo and Noah stretched out beside her on the mattress with his phone, one hand occasionally drifting over to rest on her bare thigh like he needed the contact. Every now and then she felt him watching her instead of the screen.

“You’re staring again,” she said without looking up.

“You’re pretty when you’re concentrating.”

She shot him a look. Noah just smiled, unrepentant, and went back to his phone.

The domesticity of it should have felt strange. It didn’t. That was the problem.

Sometime after noon the rain finally slowed. Noah sat up and reached for his jeans.

Maya’s stomach dropped. “You’re leaving?”

He paused, looking at her. “Got a client at two. But I’ll be back later. If you want.”

She should have said something casual. Something that kept the boundary clear.

Instead she heard herself say, “Leave the door unlocked.”

Noah’s expression softened. He leaned down and kissed her once, slow and thorough, like he was already thinking about coming back.

“I will,” he said against her mouth. “And so will you.”

He left.

Maya sat on the mattress for a long time after the door closed, laptop forgotten beside her, the taste of him still on her tongue. The apartment felt too quiet without him in it. She hated that too.

She got up, walked to the door, and checked the lock.

Still unlocked.

Maya rested her forehead against the wood and closed her eyes.

She was falling.

And for the first time, she wasn’t sure she wanted to stop.

  • The Boy Next Door    Epilogue

**One Year Later**The rain had started again, soft and steady against the windows, the same way it had the night Noah showed up soaked and refused to let the silence win.Maya stood at the sliding door of the apartment that had been theirs for a full year now, coffee mug warm between her hands, and watched the water bead and run down the glass. Across the narrow strip of grass, the unit that used to be hers still sat quiet in the early morning light. Someone else lived there now—a young couple with a small dog that barked at squirrels. She never looked at it with longing. She only looked at it the way people look at an old photograph: proof of a version of herself she had outgrown.Behind her, the bedroom door opened.Noah’s footsteps were familiar even before his arms slid around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, still warm from sleep, and pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“You’re up early,” he murmured.“Couldn’t sleep.” She leaned back into him. “Anniversar

**Six months laterMaya woke to the smell of coffee and the low sound of rain against the windows. For a moment she stayed still, eyes closed, cataloguing the familiar details the way she sometimes still did—Noah’s heavier breathing behind her, the warm weight of his arm across her waist, the faint scent of his skin and the laundry detergent they both used now. The bed was theirs. The apartment was theirs. The quiet Sunday morning stretching ahead of them was theirs too.She smiled into the pillow.Behind her, Noah stirred. His arm tightened, pulling her more firmly against his chest. He pressed a slow, sleepy kiss to the back of her shoulder, then another higher up, near the side of her neck.“You’re awake,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep.“So are you.”“Your breathing changed.” He kissed the same spot again, lingering. “It always does.”Maya turned in his arms so she could see him. Noah’s hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. His eyes were sof

**The first box went into Noah’s apartment on Saturday morning.Maya stood in the middle of her nearly empty living room and stared at the bare walls. The mattress was still there—stripped and leaning against the wall for the donation pickup—but almost everything else had already been carried across the grass. Noah had recruited one of the trainers from the gym to help with the heavier pieces. The two of them moved with efficient, minimal conversation while Maya packed the last of the kitchen things and tried not to feel the strange finality of it.Sofia showed up mid-morning with coffee and an exaggerated look of appraisal.“You’re really doing it,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “Giving up the emergency exit.”Maya taped a box shut and shot her sister a look. “It’s not an emergency exit. It’s an apartment I barely used.”“Uh-huh.” Sofia sipped her coffee, eyes sparkling. “Dad said Noah looked like he was trying not to smile too hard the whole time you were at the house. M

****The drive to Maya’s parents’ house the next morning felt longer than the actual twenty minutes it took.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on her thigh, thumb tracing slow, absent circles through the fabric of her jeans. Maya watched the familiar streets pass and tried to organize what she wanted to say. Her parents already knew the broad strokes from Sofia’s call and the police report. What they didn’t know was how deeply Noah was woven into the story now—or how permanent she intended that to be.Noah glanced over. “You nervous?”“A little.” She covered his hand with hers. “They always liked you. I’m more nervous about admitting how long I tried to keep this casual when it never was.”His mouth curved. “I’ll try not to look too smug about being right.”“Appreciated.”The house looked the same as it always had—neat lawn, the old oak tree that still held the remnants of a tire swing, her mother’s flower beds along the front walk. Maya’s father opened the d

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 19: Final Line

****The restraining order paperwork sat on Noah’s kitchen table like a quiet threat of its own.Maya stared at the printed forms while Noah finished a call with the lawyer his security-contact friend had recommended. The woman on the other end had been brisk and practical: document everything, file promptly, request a temporary order first, prepare for the possibility that Daniel might contest it. None of it was complicated. All of it felt heavy.Noah ended the call and set his phone down. “She can meet us tomorrow morning at the courthouse. Temporary order can usually be issued the same day if the judge agrees the pattern of contact is clear.”Maya nodded. Her coffee had gone cold an hour ago. “Okay.”He pulled out the chair beside her and sat. His knee bumped hers under the table and stayed there. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you the whole time.”“I know.” She reached for his hand without looking. His fingers closed around hers immediately. “I just hate that it go

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 18: The Choice

****Maya woke before Noah the next morning.Sunlight filtered through the half-open curtains of his bedroom, painting a soft stripe across the sheets and the bare curve of his shoulder. He slept on his stomach, face turned toward her, one arm stretched out like he had reached for her in the night and simply left it there. The sight of him—unarmed, unguarded, completely at ease in sleep—made something tight and tender pull under her ribs. She lay still for a long time and watched him breathe. The events of the previous night sat in her chest like a stone that had finally started to dissolve. Daniel at the door. Noah stepping into the hallway without hesitation. The raw, protective edge in his voice when he told her ex that it was over. The way he had held her afterward, steady and certain, while the leftover adrenaline drained out of both of them. She had spent years building walls designed to keep exactly this kind of feeling out. And somehow the boy next door had walked through ever
