“Yo, Caleb!”
Richard, a second-year resident doctor, calls out my name as I stand in front of the nurses’ station, consulting with the charge nurse on a patient who was passed to me for care.
He stops by the station, patting my shoulder as he leans in to whisper in my ear. “There’s a hot chick outside who’s asking for you. She says she’s your girlfriend.”
Anna?
I frown immediately, my brows furrowing with a downward crease. “Anna?”
“That’s her name?” He shrugs. “I don’t know, man. All I know,” he grins as he wriggles his brows, “is that you’re one lucky man. I’ve been unlucky with dates since I started working here, but you managed to land a hot woman like that.”
I nod stiffly at the compliment. “Thanks.”
He grins. “Anytime man.” I start to walk away, when he doubles back. “Hey,” he arches a brow in a way I completely don’t understand. “You think she has a friend that’s hot too? I wouldn’t mind getting set up. A blind date, or something like that.”
I smile thinly. “I’ll ask.”
He hits me hard on the shoulder, jostling me forward. “That’s why you’re the man. Gotta check on my patient to make sure her boyfriend hasn’t snuck a greasy burger into her room. It’ll totally screw up my day.”
I pretend like I care, nodding twice before moving on.
Anna. I shove my hands into my pockets, my shoulders tight with tension. She hasn’t been to the hospital once since we started dating. Since I started working here.
Something about not liking the antiseptic smell hospitals have.
So, what’s she doing here?
I squint sharply as I step through the doors, into the bright sunny afternoon, sparing my eyes from the blinding torture.
“Hey babe!”
I turn in the direction of the parking lot, where there’s shade. She’s standing there, by the truck, dressed in a pretty summery dress. She’s pretty. She’s always been pretty, though.
Anna crosses the distance as I walk at a measured pace, getting to me before I’m halfway across. She throws her arms around my neck and kisses me quickly on the mouth…but for some reason, I hesitate before hugging her back.
“What are you doing here?” My voice also comes out like a query, instead of a casual expression.
She shrugs with a pouty smile, her arms still around my neck. “I just thought I’d surprise you.”
I shake my head. “I thought you didn’t like hospitals? And…we saw each other two days ago.”
Two days ago, when I stormed out of my apartment, using her as an excuse to be a jerk. The memory returns, with a tight feeling in my chest.
The truth though, is that I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
…I haven’t stopped thinking about the look on Ryan’s face when I had my hand down his jeans, his eyes rolled back and his lips parted. I haven’t forgotten the sounds he made…begging, pleading with me to make him come.
The way his eyes glazed over when I stroked him faster…harder…and the way it made my heart race. Like I felt fucking alive for the first time in a long time.
A feeling I’d only experienced one other time.
When he was down on his knees between my legs.
“Are you saying we can’t hang out every day?” Anna’s tone is sharp and accusatory, dragging me back to the conversation.
I drag my fingers through my hair roughly, forcing a smile on my face. “No, babe,” I reply, as evenly as I can, ignoring the gnawing feeling in my chest and pushing Ryan out of my head. “I just thought it was strange, that’s all. Especially because…” I trail off, glancing around when it suddenly hits me.
She steps back, her smile wobbling. “Right,” she says flatly, but I hear the hurt in her voice. “You can’t be seen showing affection to your girlfriend because you’re pretending to date someone else.”
“I—” I exhale in a rush.
I don’t know what to say that’ll make it feel better.
“Wow,” she scoffs. “That’s the best you can do?” She thrust her hands on her hips. “Your girlfriend overcomes her fear of the hospital to see you and you care more about some boy and keeping up pretenses?”
Some boy.
Some boy with my fingers curled around his cock, his eyes wide and wet, his lashes trembling against his cheeks. His groans, needy and pleading, his pre-cum leaking from the tip.
“Anna…” My jaw clenches as I rake my fingers through my hair again. “I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sorry. I—there’s a lot to do. I’ve been on call for hours and I’m exhausted.”
She softens and I feel like the biggest asshole in the world when she leans in to kiss my cheek. “I understand,” she nods. “You’re my busy doctor. That’s why I took a half-day from work to prepare something for you.”
My lips purse. “Something like what?”
She places a finger to my lips. “Shh. It’s a surprise. You only get to find out if you pick me up when your shift’s over. You get to go home today, right?”
I’m tempted to say no.
But the guilt forces me to say yes. “Maybe we should hang out at your place,” I suggest gently.
She rolls her eyes. “My roommate is bringing her boyfriend home. And he smokes. I hate it,” she pouts harder. “Besides, you have a bigger space. Or—” her expression turns sour, “—am I banned from your place now? Because of him?”
I shake my head quickly. “No. Ryan understands.”
She scoffs. “Better. He’s only paying for half the place. You’re allowed to bring people over too. It’s not like you two are dating or hooking up.” She places her hand on my chest as she sighs, leaning in. I wonder if she can tell how fast it’s beating…
…if she can interpret the lies in my words from my racing heart.
“I should go back in,” I say gruffly. “I’ll come pick you up at eight.”
She straightens, a bright color on her cheeks. “You promise?”
I nod. “Yeah, I do.”
I stiffen again when she hops on her toes to kiss me on the mouth. Thankfully, she doesn’t notice. “I’ll be waiting,” she murmurs. “So I hope you don’t disappoint your amazing girlfriend. Unless you’ll get an award for shittiest boyfriend of the year.”
I watch her walk away, my shoulders slumping as she gets into a cab and it drives off.
Shittiest boyfriend of the year.
I sigh as I shove my hands into my pockets, turning back to the hospital. I should buy the award myself. Or tattoo it on my forehead.
So she knows that I don’t deserve her.
Because I’ve spent the last two nights in the shower, jerking off to a face that doesn’t look like hers.
CalebI press the end call button on my phone, cutting off Richard’s endless stream of recap about the blind date he went on during the weekend. My gaze is on the car parked in front of the apartment building. Black. Expensive. I don’t recognize it, but the chill down my spine and the uncomfortable feeling that sits in the middle of my chest tell me already. Christian Thompson. Owner and CEO of CT. Industries, a billion-dollar company primarily involved in manufacturing automobiles. The back windows are tinted, but I can feel my father’s gaze from where I stand, frigid and disapproving. My phone slowly comes down from my ear, slipping into my pocket. My jaw clenches and my breathing sharpens. It’s the first time my father has visited me since I showed up at the house and told him I was dating a man. A boy. He didn’t say much to me back then. His mouth was in its perpetual look of displeasure and disappointment, but he shook his head. “We tell you not to marry a girl that comes
Ryan I look up from reviewing the adoption requests on the shelter’s computer, in the office I share with Ana—who’s rarely around—when Leon pops up by the door. He peeks in with his head first, and his hand moving in a tiny wave. “Are you busy?” He uses the same voice as the golden retriever hours ago, which makes me laugh a little bit. “I’m just finishing up with some stuff,” I tell him. “But I’m not busy. What’s up?”He shows up full in the door space, a bashful smile on his face. He clears his throat once, slipping his hands into his pockets and attempting to look relaxed. “I know we just met and all, and I know it might be too forward for me to ask this…” he pauses for a moment. “But I was wondering if you’d like to go out for drinks after work?”I start to respond, my brows slowly furrowing, but he beats me to it, waving his hands all over the place. “As friends,” he adds hurriedly. “I’m not trying to break any work rules or anything,” he moves to tuck his hair behind his ea
Ryan “Ahem.”A smile forms on my face as I take a break from the golden retriever puppy licking my face, put it down, and turn to Amy, my boss. “You should get him,” she comments. “He’s gotten attached to you. He doesn’t let anybody else come close to him.”I laugh, shaking my head. “He’s scared, that’s all. I’m sure he’ll come around very soon. Nobody can win against the infamous “Amy’s touch.”She rolls her eyes, but her smile widens. “You’re the only person who works here that doesn’t have a pet. You have the entire office taking bets to see how long it’ll last before you cave in.”As if he can understand the conversation, the puppy scrambles into my arms, licking my cheek earnestly. I shake my head fondly as I pick him up, letting him have full reign over one side of my face. “Can I join the bet?”“Or you can just agree to take the little fella right now,” she comments. “If you do, I’ll win the bet and the two of us can split the winnings. I’ll even throw in a bunch of stuff so y
CalebI push in slow. His hole is tight and fucking warm, gripping every inch as I sink deeper. Ryan’s mouth falls open on a silent gasp as his nails dig into my skin. I freeze halfway, giving him time, watching his face for any real pain. “Are you okay?”He nods, but I still wait…for him to tell me that it’s okay to continue. When he doesn’t, I wrap my hand around his cock that is still very hard and stroke him slowly. His eyes flutter and a soft, needy sound escapes him. “Please…”“Do you want me to continue?” I grit out, as my cock pulses inside his tight hole, desperate to pump inside him. To fuck him until I can feel him trembling in every way. I push a little, tilting my hips and thrusting slowly into him. His eyes roll back with a broken gasp, but he takes it with a keen whimper. “That’s it,” I murmur, sliding the rest of the way in until my hips are flush against his ass. “Take it. You’re taking me so well.”I stay still for a long moment, buried to the hilt, letting him a
CalebI shouldn’t be doing this. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I know that it’s wrong for a whole lot of reasons. There’s someone else I claim to love. We’re crossing a line that until now, I pretended didn’t exist. But when Ryan’s hands slide under my shirt, warm palms spread over my back and his arms are around my neck, I forget all about my guilt and the many reasons. I kiss him like I’m drowning, my tongue sliding against his, swallowing his throaty moan and giving him one of my own.I’m hard enough that it aches and every shift of my hips presses my cock against the growing bulge in his pants, the friction making both of us shudder.“You’re an asshole,” he whispers against my lips, nipping the lower one hard enough to sting. “But I’m terrible at lying. I didn’t come back because I forgot something. I was thinking about you—I’ve been thinking about you, Caleb.” Something in my chest cracks open at that. Knowing that I’m not the only one who was suffering all evening, mak
Ryan I shouldn’t be here. I’m not sure what I’m doing back in the apartment—with an excuse that didn’t make sense to me even when I tried repeating it to myself in the back of the cab that brought me back. “Hi…” Caleb says softly. The first thing I notice is that Anna’s not around. I glance in the direction of his bedroom. “She’s not here,” Caleb supplies, as if reading my thoughts. “Oh,” I mumble. I figured they were going to spend the night together. Did something happen? Was it because of me? I push the thought away before I can fall into a trap of delusion, nodding flatly. “I see,” I add. “Well,” I wring my hands, “I forgot something. I just came to pick it up. I’ll be out of your way soon.”I turn before I can say anything else—like how good it felt to see his face—retreating behind the safety of the door standing between us. Inside my room, I fall back on the bed with a sigh, placing my hands over my face. “What’s the big plan now, Ryan?” I mumble to the empty room. “Yo
