There’s a box at the front of the door when we get to the apartment hours later, propped up against it and tipped halfway.
“Ouuu—” Anna lets go of my hand and rushes over to pick it up. “Is it yours? What is it?” She turns to me, shaking the package all excitedly before I can tell her it doesn’t belong to me because I haven’t ordered anything.
She figures it out herself when she turns it over, trying to look for clues and sees Ryan’s name.
“It’s for your fake boyfriend,” she says dryly, tossing it to me. I manage to catch it with one hand, careful not to let the bag in my other hand fall. The one with the cake she baked—raspberries and chocolate, my favorite.
I shake it a little, just out of curiosity, but I quickly tuck it against my waist and the crook of my arm when she frowns at me. “It’s an invasion of privacy,” she tells me. “Even if he’s your fake boyfriend.”
I’m not sure if she’s on his side—and I doubt it seriously.
“I wasn’t going to.”
She rolls her eyes playfully. “Sure. You don’t know if he has something that’s not meant for your eyes in there.”
“Something like what?”
Anna purses her lips, tapping her chin. “I don’t know, like…” her eyes gleam with mischief for a moment, “…a sex toy?”
I groan, shaking my head.
“What?” She laughs, feeling proud of her joke as she walks over to me. “It might be a sex toy. I know I’ll get one if my roommate was having sex and I couldn’t get any.”
She grabs the keys from my pocket and walks back to the door, swinging her waist and flipping her hair over her shoulder.
I hang back, without meaning to, as she walks into the apartment, my gaze returning to the package.
A sex toy?
I read the label for a description, but the only thing it says is “fragile.” The sending address doesn’t sound like a place that sells adult toys either. But for some reason, Anna’s words stick in my head and I find myself picturing Ryan using a sex toy.
Down there, I feel a little jerk.
I shake my head vehemently, tossing the image out.
“Get your head out of the gutter, Caleb,” I grunt in annoyance, striding to the door and marching in.
I stop, a few steps into the apartment, my gaze zeroing in on Ryan in the dining room, my brows furrowing.
“What…” I shake my head slowly, trying to put together what I’m seeing. Or figure out what’s going on, really. “…what are you doing?”
Ryan looks up from the duffel bag that’s open on the table, his lips flattening when he sees the package in my hand. “That belongs to me,” he says coldly.
“I picked it up for you,” I explain, as I walk over to the dining area to hand it to him. Music comes from my room, the sound blasting through the walls. Ryan spares my bedroom door a split-second look, and even though I can’t see his face, I watch his shoulders tense for a second before they loosen.
My mind goes back to that night, and the familiar weight settles in my chest before I can push it away.
My fingers tighten around the edge of the package before I finally set it down in front of him.
“I didn’t mean to—” I start when he turns back, but the words catch in my throat. I swallow and force myself to look at him again, only to find that I can’t quite bring myself to meet his eyes for more than a second.
“Never mind,” I murmur.
He picks up the package and I glance into his bag—more puzzled at the clothes that are neatly folded and other stuff that looks like…
“Are you going somewhere?” I question.
“Why does it matter to you?” He snaps, even colder.
Why?
Because we were roommates. Because… “I just thought you’d want me to know in case someone came looking for you for something,” I say, trying to act nonchalant with a flick of my shoulder. “Plus, if you’re going to be gone for a while, I should know what to say if there’s a situation where your name comes up.”
Ryan scoffs under his breath as he tucks the package into his bag. “I doubt that’ll happen,” he says. “It’s not like anyone cares about our fake relationship anymore.”
He’s right.
The heat has significantly died down compared to when we started “dating.” That's why Richard has no idea that I'm dating a boy. Supposedly.
But I know that my dad is trying to secure a deal to purchase a company…and his parents are always involved in one newsworthy thing or the other. And that inadvertently leads to us getting public attention again.“So,” I say, hesitantly, “can I know where you’re going, at least?”
He shrugs as he zips the bag. “It’s not important.”
Not important?
It was the kind of thing we told each other.
Why was he pushing me out? I take a step closer, placing a hand on his arm, but he shrugs it off roughly, his eyes flashing and his chest heaving. “Don’t—” he grits his teeth. “Don’t touch me.”
“I—“ I blink several times, confused by his reaction. “Did I do something wrong?”
I realize how wrong the question is as soon as it leaves my mouth—how hypocritical it sounds to even ask it—but it’s too late.
Ryan scoffs as he leaves his duffel. He turns to me, his brows slanted and his arms crossed. “I didn’t know, Caleb, what do you think? Did you do something wrong and now I have to leave because of it, or am I just going on a trip and I don’t think it’s your business to know any of the details?”
“Ryan—
He doesn’t let me finish. Although I’m not sure what I’m going to say, either.
“I’m going to be out of your hair, Caleb. So you don’t have to deal with the inconvenience of leaving your apartment at night. And maybe,” his voice softens, but with sadness, “I’ll find some other place to move into.”
Move?
He grabs his bag, but I grab his wrist before he can walk away. “What are you doing?” I hiss. “I didn’t say anything about not wanting you here.”
Ryan smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “You didn’t have to. Walking away after you had your hand down my pants was enough to send a clear message.”
“You—“ I grit my teeth, struggling to find the words. “You can’t expect me to do anything about that, Ryan. You know that’s not what I am.”
His mouth falls open in disbelief.
Then he scoffs incredulously, yanking his hand free. “What you are is a hypocrite, Caleb." He chuckles mirthlessly. "And you certainly enjoy being an asshole, too.”
Ryan I look up from reviewing the adoption requests on the shelter’s computer, in the office I share with Ana—who’s rarely around—when Leon pops up by the door. He peeks in with his head first, and his hand moving in a tiny wave. “Are you busy?” He uses the same voice as the golden retriever hours ago, which makes me laugh a little bit. “I’m just finishing up with some stuff,” I tell him. “But I’m not busy. What’s up?”He shows up full in the door space, a bashful smile on his face. He clears his throat once, slipping his hands into his pockets and attempting to look relaxed. “I know we just met and all, and I know it might be too forward for me to ask this…” he pauses for a moment. “But I was wondering if you’d like to go out for drinks after work?”I start to respond, my brows slowly furrowing, but he beats me to it, waving his hands all over the place. “As friends,” he adds hurriedly. “I’m not trying to break any work rules or anything,” he moves to tuck his hair behind his ea
Ryan “Ahem.”A smile forms on my face as I take a break from the golden retriever puppy licking my face, put it down, and turn to Amy, my boss. “You should get him,” she comments. “He’s gotten attached to you. He doesn’t let anybody else come close to him.”I laugh, shaking my head. “He’s scared, that’s all. I’m sure he’ll come around very soon. Nobody can win against the infamous “Amy’s touch.”She rolls her eyes, but her smile widens. “You’re the only person who works here that doesn’t have a pet. You have the entire office taking bets to see how long it’ll last before you cave in.”As if he can understand the conversation, the puppy scrambles into my arms, licking my cheek earnestly. I shake my head fondly as I pick him up, letting him have full reign over one side of my face. “Can I join the bet?”“Or you can just agree to take the little fella right now,” she comments. “If you do, I’ll win the bet and the two of us can split the winnings. I’ll even throw in a bunch of stuff so y
CalebI push in slow. His hole is tight and fucking warm, gripping every inch as I sink deeper. Ryan’s mouth falls open on a silent gasp as his nails dig into my skin. I freeze halfway, giving him time, watching his face for any real pain. “Are you okay?”He nods, but I still wait…for him to tell me that it’s okay to continue. When he doesn’t, I wrap my hand around his cock that is still very hard and stroke him slowly. His eyes flutter and a soft, needy sound escapes him. “Please…”“Do you want me to continue?” I grit out, as my cock pulses inside his tight hole, desperate to pump inside him. To fuck him until I can feel him trembling in every way. I push a little, tilting my hips and thrusting slowly into him. His eyes roll back with a broken gasp, but he takes it with a keen whimper. “That’s it,” I murmur, sliding the rest of the way in until my hips are flush against his ass. “Take it. You’re taking me so well.”I stay still for a long moment, buried to the hilt, letting him a
CalebI shouldn’t be doing this. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I know that it’s wrong for a whole lot of reasons. There’s someone else I claim to love. We’re crossing a line that until now, I pretended didn’t exist. But when Ryan’s hands slide under my shirt, warm palms spread over my back and his arms are around my neck, I forget all about my guilt and the many reasons. I kiss him like I’m drowning, my tongue sliding against his, swallowing his throaty moan and giving him one of my own.I’m hard enough that it aches and every shift of my hips presses my cock against the growing bulge in his pants, the friction making both of us shudder.“You’re an asshole,” he whispers against my lips, nipping the lower one hard enough to sting. “But I’m terrible at lying. I didn’t come back because I forgot something. I was thinking about you—I’ve been thinking about you, Caleb.” Something in my chest cracks open at that. Knowing that I’m not the only one who was suffering all evening, mak
Ryan I shouldn’t be here. I’m not sure what I’m doing back in the apartment—with an excuse that didn’t make sense to me even when I tried repeating it to myself in the back of the cab that brought me back. “Hi…” Caleb says softly. The first thing I notice is that Anna’s not around. I glance in the direction of his bedroom. “She’s not here,” Caleb supplies, as if reading my thoughts. “Oh,” I mumble. I figured they were going to spend the night together. Did something happen? Was it because of me? I push the thought away before I can fall into a trap of delusion, nodding flatly. “I see,” I add. “Well,” I wring my hands, “I forgot something. I just came to pick it up. I’ll be out of your way soon.”I turn before I can say anything else—like how good it felt to see his face—retreating behind the safety of the door standing between us. Inside my room, I fall back on the bed with a sigh, placing my hands over my face. “What’s the big plan now, Ryan?” I mumble to the empty room. “Yo
Caleb “You’ve been in a mood all evening,” Anna grumbles when she perches on the couch next to me, snuggling close enough to place her hand on my chest. She leans in, purring into my ear. “Aren’t you glad that he’s gone? Now we have more space and time to ourselves.” Her hand travels lower as she talks, lingering at the lower part of my stomach, before tiptoeing over my crotch. “I get that you’re worried about him because he’s your roommate, but he’s an adult. He should be able to take care of himself.”My teeth grind as she loosens the drawstring on my sweatpants, her hand sliding into my pants. My hips jerk, but in protest to her touch, rather than into it. “See?” Anna laughs softly. “You’re interested. You just have to tell your mind to be quiet and we can spend the rest of the evening doing something better, instead of sitting and having cereal and moping.”I look at the bowl of half-eaten cereal sitting on the coffee table. I dumped it at some point, because I’d been forcing my
