Chapter 1

"Enough. Spare me the nonsense about true love. You're not worthy of my son!"

The woman threw a glass of water in my face.

Then, she threw a check at me.

"Take the check and leave my son."

She clearly did not want to waste any more time talking to me, so she turned and walked away.

She left me with a $200,000 check.

This was already the third one!

I had no idea what kind of curse I was under.

Ever since my first boyfriend, every one of their mothers had tried to break us up with a check.

All three were exactly the same. Even their lines had barely differed.

That was how I tearfully made $600,000.

Some people get rich through housing compensation, others through winning the lottery., others through the lottery. Somehow, I got rich through breakups.

Despite my heartbreak, I was relieved that there was finally hope of paying off the $1 million debt my deadbeat father had left behind.

My best friend, Jojo, said that if we were going to do something, we might as well go all out.

So, using her identity as a trust-fund heiress, she smuggled me into an exclusive singles mixer for the wealthy.

Among the roomful of sharply dressed elite bachelors, she pointed out one man who was especially handsome and striking.

He stood out among the exceptional men around him. His expression was cool and aloof, one hand lazily swirling his wineglass while his legs were crossed.

"See him? The one in the black shirt."

The black shirt fit him perfectly, outlining his broad shoulders and slim waist while adding to his tall, refined appearance.

"His family is incredibly rich. You should give him a try..."

My eyes lit up. Before Jojo could finish, I grabbed a glass of wine and headed over.

A group of dazzling women surrounded the man in the shirt.

They looked eager to approach him, but held their glasses with studied restraint, afraid of being rejected.

Instead, they whispered among themselves, subtly showing off their charms and doing their best to stay alluring.

I was determined to win him over.

But once I got closer, I suddenly lost my nerve.

He looked up.

He had a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and striking, well-proportioned features. The top button of his black shirt was undone, leaving the collar slightly open, while loose strands of hair fell casually over his forehead to either side.

He looked somewhat familiar, as if I had seen him somewhere before.

Maybe in a financial news report.

"Hi." I gave him my most polished smile.

He gave a slight nod, but his eyes brightened. "You know me?"

"Not yet, but we will soon."

Or had I imagined it? The light in his eyes seemed to dim.

I sat down in front of him and wondered how to start the conversation.

"Isn't this a matchmaking event? Is there anything you'd like to know about me?"

He leaned back and studied me.

Everyone who could attend this event was financially well-off. If I managed to date any one of them, I would no longer have to worry about my debt.

"How many people have you dated?" I asked, my eyes lighting up with curiosity.

"None. I've been too busy with work." He took an awkward sip of coffee after he spoke.

A handsome guy who was clueless about love?

"Perfect!" I slapped the table excitedly.

Then I blinked at him and said, "I've dated three men, so I have plenty of relationship experience. We're a perfect match!"

He paused, looking slightly surprised.

I could clearly feel the intense gazes from those around us.

The women who had been showing off their charms had started sneaking glances at us the moment I sat down.

Just then, Jojo hurried over and pulled me aside.

"Not him, girl! What were you thinking? How did you even dare to go for him?"

Jojo discreetly gestured toward the man in the dark-gray shirt beside him. "I meant that one... The guy you approached is way out of our league."

I followed her gesture and looked over.

He wasn't bad either, but his looks were nowhere near as impressive as the man I had just spoken to.

After all that, I had picked the wrong target.

Fine. I would start over.

I picked up another glass of wine and prepared to try again.

The man grabbed his suit jacket and blocked my path.

I looked up at him in confusion.

"Didn't you say we were a perfect match?" he asked, watching me with amusement.

What did he mean? Had I actually succeeded?

I only realized what had happened when the two of us went to collect the little gift for successfully finding a match.

Was a man with no dating experience really this easy to win over?

Was my charm too powerful to resist, or did my dating experience appeal to him?

I couldn't figure it out.

"All right, look at the camera."

Everyone who successfully matched had to take a photo together at the venue.

All the guests turned to look at us, and I vaguely heard a few resentful voices.

"She succeeded after saying just a few words?"

"If I'd known he was this easy to win over, I would have gone for him!"

I came back to my senses and looked at the man beside me. He had put on his suit, which made his restrained, seductive appeal even more irresistible.

"So, what are we now?"

"We successfully matched. What do you think?"

"All right, boyfriend. What's your name?"

I never expected Stephen to look so cold and aloof on the outside, yet be completely and hopelessly in love."When did Mr. Farr Sr. see my photo?""When we were still friends, Grandpa was happy that my mood had improved. I showed him your photo and told him you were the girl I liked. I never expected him to recognize you instantly after all these years.""Then what about your letter? Picky couldn't possibly have been me.""You forgot? You once wrote a novel for class based on yourself. The female lead was named Picky."I vaguely remembered that. Thinking about it made me feel a little embarrassed."What did the letter say?"I asked curiously. His face flushed, and he refused to let me see it.I pestered him and coaxed him in every way I could until he reluctantly showed me a short passage. It described what had been going through his mind whenever he missed me.I never expected Stephen to be so secretly devoted. He had liked me for so long, yet he hadn't said a word."What

My tears stopped instantly. "What do you mean?"Stephen sighed. "Do you remember the transfer student at your school during your sophomore year? The one who used a wheelchair?""How did you..." I stopped. He knew?During my sophomore year, a transfer student joined our class. He used a wheelchair and rarely spoke. He only stared at the birds outside the window. His hair was slightly long and fell over his eyebrows. His entire presence seemed gloomy and defeated, as though he had lost all hope for the future. Some classmates said he was once a gifted prodigy. He had been in a terrible car accident after a ballroom dancing competition. He barely survived, and his lower body was almost completely paralyzed. There was little hope that he would ever make a full recovery.Someone who had always been so proud and competitive had suffered such a devastating blow.It must have been unbearably cruel for him."That boy was you?"He nodded. When Stephen transferred to the school, h

The rumor fell apart on its own, and Nina could no longer maintain her facade.I had no choice but to ignore everything and begin my presentation.I covered the current situation, next quarter's plans, our targets, and how we intended to achieve them. There were no major problems. I delivered the presentation steadily.Afterward, several coworkers looked at me with undisguised curiosity.Annie darted over to me."Yuna, tell me what's going on. Why is your photo on Mr. Farr's computer? You and he are actually together, aren't you? What about Nina, then...?""Stephen and I are dating." I had no choice but to admit it.When I returned to the office, my coworkers began whispering among themselves."I always thought Nina was Mr. Farr's fiancée. I never expected it to be Yuna Smith.""Why didn't Nina explain herself? She kept up that act for so long.""Exactly. I can't believe his actual girlfriend was right here the whole time. She has no shame.""Still, I think Nina and Mr. Fa

I asked curiously, "How do you know?""Everyone's been saying that she's a perfect match for Mr. Farr. They say she's the granddaughter of his grandfather's longtime friend."Nina? When had she become Stephen's fiancée?Nina arrived in perfectly applied makeup and a sexy professional outfit. She gave everyone a sweet smile. "Please take good care of me."Nina was certain that I hadn't made my relationship with Stephen public. Or perhaps she simply didn't care. She had come here just to provoke me.Anyone who saw a childhood friend from an equally prestigious family would assume that she was Stephen's fiancée.Stephen happened to be away, so no one was there to expose her charade. After Nina arrived, everyone became even more convinced that she was Stephen's fiancée."Nina, are you and Mr. Farr really discussing marriage?"Nina didn't answer. She only gave a shy smile, making no effort to hide the love in her eyes and leaving everyone to imagine the rest."Nina, were you and M

The next day, my coworkers were buzzing with gossip when I arrived at the office. A few of them had even pulled out their cushion compacts to touch up their makeup."I don't know. I heard he's unmarried.""Seriously? Someone this outstanding still isn't married?""He probably has a girlfriend. A handsome and successful man like Mr. Farr must have women lining up to pursue him."Were they referring to our vice president, Victor Fahr? I pictured a potbellied, half-bald man. What kind of terrible judgment did they have? I shook my head."Yuna, did you hear? Mr. Farr is coming to inspect the company today." Annie leaned over and revealed the inside scoop in a mysterious voice."Didn't Mr. Fahr come last month?" I asked in confusion. Victor only came for an inspection once every three months. Why were they never this excited before?Annie was busy applying false eyelashes, so she only tossed out one sentence before falling silent."That means no slacking off today. Ugh." I sighe

"Want to have dinner together tonight?"Stephen sent me a message. He also sent me a location pin. The restaurant was right beside my office."Sure. See you then!"The restaurant was so expensive it made my jaw drop. I heard that it cost at least $500 per person.Everyone coming and going was dressed formally. I looked down at my T-shirt and jeans and fell into deep thought.A child came running through the lobby.I frowned. Which family did this little brat belong to?Sure enough, the child accidentally knocked over a drinks table the next second. The glasses of alcohol on top wobbled dangerously, about to spill.I quickly sidestepped out of the way.Thank goodness I was wearing jeans. They made it so easy to move."Ah!" The woman behind me let out a sharp scream. The champagne that had nearly spilled all over me landed on the young woman behind me instead. A small stain spread across her figure-hugging skirt."Stop!" the woman called after me. "You got my skirt dirty an
