I got down first and fastened my suit jacket. The entirety of this wedding would be a success only if I got the expression I wanted from my wife.

My wife.

I was watching her from the moment she stepped out of the car, she was distracted from the view, adjusting her train and eventually pulling off her veil from her bun.

All through the ceremony Mira hadn't been at peace with the dress, earlier at the snack bar I noticed the red patch on her neck, she kept touching the lace around her neck, yanking at it and rubbing against the lace on her sleeves.

She wasn't wearing the dress on her P*******t board, the one with a calmer silhouette and a slight lavender hue you could almost miss in the dark, she preferred that over a ball dress in her sister's more extravagant style but there was no other way to have kept this from her if the dress was changed last minute. The two ladies were sisters as far as sisters could go but their preferences were worlds apart.

I was determined to make up for it with the venue.

Mira gasped, finally looking up at the building looming over us. The rustique Meridian stood tall, white and impeccable. It was the dream of every artist and enthusiast.

She blinked between me and the venue, her jaw hung loose, her eyes blinking incessantly, her hand still held on to the car door.

I came up beside her, offering her my arm. “You like it?”

She looked away from the high building and settled on me. “What… what is going on Theo.”

I took her hand in mine and led her into the reception venue but she peeled her hand away from mine.

“Theo I didn't see this in the plan. Selena's reception venue is on the other side of the city, the reception venue is already decorated. Her venue is at Paloma. What are we doing here?”

That wasn't the tone I expected but I could still salvage this. There was no other option.

“That was Selena's choice Mira. This is your choice. Your dream.”

She drew back, again. Her eyes glistened.

“How would you know that? You are supposed to be worried about your wife, Selena. You do not even care that my sister disappeared. No one is bothered in the least that my sister could've run into some danger.”

“You are my wife. Now please, let's go in. I can't wait to see your reaction once you're inside.”

“I won't until you explain what the hell is going on and why the hell we're at Meridia. This is a museum of the oldest art, this wasn't the venue I made plans for and I refuse to let you keep stringing me along.”

God. She just won't drop it. She kept stepping away from me and I hated it. I hated that she was running from me.

Earlier I had spoken harshly to her and I wanted to die doing it, her expression, the way she shrunk, I hated it and especially when I made her do it but I just wanted her to go with the flow, I had plans to explain things to her.

The only way to get her to comply was to keep her frightened and I was a douchebag for it but being with her mattered more. I'd fix it later.

I drew close to her, close enough I heard her gasp, her chest grazed my jacket.

God. She had a scent I had never gotten enough of.

“Don't make me repeat myself Mirabella. Take my arm and walk in with me.” I whispered

She looked up at my face, her lips quivered as they normally did when she was holding back.

I pointed a glance to the entrance. “Shall we?”

The cars of our guest lined up behind us waiting for the valet to take their cars. We held up the line and rightfully so.

Mira curled her arms around my arm to the best of her capabilities, tighter than a lover would.

Yes I got what I've always dreamed of every passing day, marrying her but in the span of four hours I had somehow seen hate in her eyes that I had never seen before.

The grand doors were opened up for us and I watched her every expression, if she was surprised or happy she didn't show it.

The cool air of the common room embraced us, the smell of old paints and mildly scented flowers from the decorations offered a homey yet rich ambience. This time I made sure to get rid of the peonies and replaced them with daisies.

I was pleased with the decorations but there was no telling if she was. I couldn't decipher what the quiver that ran through her body meant.

“Sweetie, are you okay?”

She tore her eyes away from an original Antoinette painting hanging on the wall.

“You did all of this?”

The quiver again in her voice. I couldn't place it, couldn't read it and it was driving me mad.

“I'm glad you like it.” I said as I placed a kiss on the back of her hand.

Mirabella jerked her hand away at the same time The Wests approached us. Friends of my parents.

I pulled her closer to me. “Behave.” I whispered and put on a smile.

“Oh what a wonderful bride you are!” Mr.

I urged her to respond with a little squeeze.

She gave a faint smile.

I smiled apologetically at the couple who already had a question in their gaze.

“My wife is far exerted, and she's shy. Once she's changed she'll be more receptive.”

I hoped it was enough to appease them. The last thing either of us wants is for talks to start. Talk was like fire, it spread rapidly and if people start talking I'd lose her and with no other option, ruin her father.

“My wife on our wedding day was exactly like your wife…?” Mr. West asked trailing off.

“Mirabella.”

“Mirabella. She's a beautiful bride.”

Another faint smile. “You're both so kind with your words. Thank you.”

Her fingers began brushing against the lace resting on her neck again. Her breaths had picked up abnormally and she looked pale.

I clapped Mr. West's back and kissed his wife's hand. “We'll be right back to you once the reception starts.” And steered us away to the East Wing which was role playing as our changing room.

My phone pinged and I fished out my phone from my breast pocket.

The screen lit up with a message.

“We have just gotten married.”

I let out a slow steady breath I didn't even know I was holding as a smile crept on to my lips.

That was the news that kept me on edge.

I was going to enjoy the reception better.

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 17: Trauma and a wedding gift

MiraNow that I wasn't in fight or flight mode and would be willfully using away my freedom I had time to relax in Theo’s house. I had given myself a tour of his house with Benny's help of course which made my tour less enjoyable. I much rather preferred non assisted tours, the kind where you just discovered. Benny was a very nice man, but I didn't need him telling me what to see and what not to see or where to go and where not to, so I used wifely powers to dismiss him early for the day with the excuse that I'll have dinner ready for my husband which translates to a peanut butter and jam sandwich. I'd gone over the two floors of his penthouse and settled in a room beside his, I particularly loved his piano room and mini library collection. Theo's house could easily pass as a small collection museum. he had a rooftop flower and herb garden which I suspected he hired. gardener to tend. Some rooms were locked which piqued my interest. I got tired from the tour after a full hour of expl

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 16: A wife at Home

Theo “Did your wife read through this?” Her blue eyes peered up at me under her thick lashes. “I mean all of this?”“I want to believe she did. We went through everything together.”“And she saw the last clause?” She was referring to the nullity of the divorce agreement if both parties fall in love.“Out with it Alba.” I croaked. She observed me for a second. She turned completely to face me. “Okay.” She leaned forward, her voice more serious. “She is yet to really know what you do, don't you think including the transition clause and putting that kind of dangerous responsibility on her is kind of a sabotage?”She contemplated. “From my interaction with her, this already feels like a burden she can't wait to get rid of.”I glanced towards the window. “I plan to do everything I can to stay alive but if she's ever put in harms way, I'm putting my life on the line without batting an eye.” I paused to let it sink in. “Make a clause that keeps her safe.”She breathed out. “As you wish.”“

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 15: Tell Me Your Safe Word

Mira.It was past 11pm but the usual eerie feeling that overcame me, fueled my body with urgency to be back home safely no later than 9pm was nowhere to be found and I hated to admit but it had to be with this man being here with me. We had transitioned from my work desk to the floor and I was wearing his suit jacket. I felt like a cocooned caterpillar. There he was, his controlled hair had given up being perfect and left him with that reckless abandon look that surfers in movies had or those sexy, really hot life guards that you'd pray to drown so they could give you a mouth to mouth. Not like I wanted that.We had agreed on moving in, it was all part of the conduct clause, public appearance and all plus Theo and his family made quite the impression to the press so I had to look and play the part. Come tomorrow, the moving people will officially move me in. We were able to negotiate a middle ground, separate bedrooms but compulsory one bed situation three times a week, together with

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 14: Terms of Contract

Theo Zoya being the woman last seen with Ivan left such a bitter taste in my mouth. I hadn't told anyone yet and resolved to approach Nickolai about it. She was his sister after all.Nic and I aren't any closer than acquaintances but he was straightforward and frankly, I got more from him that from any other clients. He was also the most dangerous of all of them, like a daddy of all things bad. I hated to cross his path and whoever did this wanted just that.We met through a mutual friend at the Laurelis gala that holds twice a year. He was late as always with his wife, the only one he fawns over. Nic with his wife is an alter ego for Nic in work mode. Since then we've maintained a peaceful friendship and mutually beneficial.I sent him a message right before leaving to meet Bella.Mirabella was glorious when her focus was locked into a piece of work. She tied her hair into a pony tail and the exertion of the day has turned some strands

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 13: Blackmail

TheoSergi was in my office as soon as I stepped in, bent over my desk. He was brooding and he wasn't the kind to brood, often he was too happy for my liking.“You missed me that much?” I asked, hoping to lighten up the mood.“I don't miss people. We have a problem.”I nodded. “Tell me about it.”He turned on the tv and pointed at it. The screen showed a journalist in front of Ivan’s home, the yellow caution tape behind the blonde woman caught my eye first. It meant that his death was not cleaned up. Whoever did this wanted to set us up. Ivan was a statesman but also Nikolai’s consigliere.“Mr. Ivan was found dead in his residence, his tongue and nails pulled out, his safe was unlocked. The Bratva think we did it.” He raked his fingers through his hair. The air was knocked out of me, I wasn't allowed to show it or react in a way that escalated it. I propped my elbows on my desk. “Did you get to his residence?”

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    chapter 12: He won't Nullify

Mira A contract? Really?I kept hearing his voice in my head even as I tried to work. Usually work was enough to busy my mind and just drift off into a Renaissance period as I worked the art but not today.I barely got enough sleep through the night.I was meeting a lawyer at lunch time and I was nervous for some reason. If I went through with it, I'd break free from this spell of people pleasing that was about to ruin my life.I thought about visiting my parents to make my intention known but decided against it, if I told them they would gas light me to endure. It was all too painful.Someone knocked on the glass door and I sighed thinking it was the landlord, my rent was due, he usually came this early to poke at my payment default. I had wealthy parents, or I thought they were but they'd rather die than support my art career. According to them, it's not honorable for an elite to be screeding art, like I'm not the one that revived all the arts they got the most money from or all t

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 10: The Sweetest Temptation

Theo The wedding night was a terror that made me cave to leave with Sergi to Chicago to settle a matter that could wait. Or Sergi could very much handle the gruesome part of things but I'd taken off my frustration on the poor man who'd ratted out the confidential information of a senator. Giving

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Where is My Husband?

MiraThe bed felt foreign as I squirmed around in it, it didn't make the normal squeak sound when I stretched and the blanket was abundant, certainly not mine, the realization startled me up from sleep followed by a piercing, ear drumming headache, a consequence of all the booze from the previous d

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 8: Wishes Are Better Kept Private

MiraI freaking kissed Theodore Hartley. Some wishes were better kept private.I managed to keep a s

  • The Bride He Wanted Was Never My Sister    Chapter 7: Her Lips Taste so much Better Than I imagined

Theo Father’s glass didn't quite make it to his lips, his eyes traced my gaze to where Harper stood with my wife. Her arms are folded in front of her. “You'll bore a hole.” I glared at my father. “I'll burn down everything if need be.” He cleared his throat. “You better keep that jealousy of yo
