Chapter 11: The Weight of Blood

The elevator dropped in silence.

No music. No soft chime announcing floors. Just the low mechanical hum and the tight grip of Damien’s hand around mine. The digital display above the doors showed nothing but a blinking red bar: SUB-LEVEL 3 – MEDICAL CONTAINMENT.

I stared at the hospital ID badge still clutched in my other hand. The nurse’s face was unfamiliar, but the name printed beneath it was not. My mother’s.

“They’re using her to control me,” I whispered. The words tasted like guilt. “Every time I fight back, she pays for it. Maybe Serena was right. Maybe I should have just disappeared after the wedding. None of this would be happening if I had taken the money and left.”

Damien’s head turned sharply. “Don’t.”

“It’s true.” My voice cracked. “I signed that contract. I walked down the aisle in her place. I let you touch me. I stayed. And now Mom is lying in a hospital bed with a stranger holding a syringe over her, and the entire family still thinks I’m the villain who stole Serena’s life.”

The elevator slowed.

Damien stepped in front of me as the doors slid open onto a sterile white corridor lit by harsh fluorescent strips. The air smelled of disinfectant and something colder underneath. Two of his security men were already waiting, weapons drawn but pointed low.

“Status,” Damien ordered.

“Cameras are still dark on the hospital floor,” one answered. “Rapid response is four minutes out. This sub-level is a private medical suite the company keeps for executives. No one should have access.”

We moved fast. Every door we passed was locked. Every corner felt like it might hide another threat. My heart hammered against my ribs, but the louder sound was the voice in my head—my mother’s from the phone call days ago, cold and final.

You’re no daughter of mine.

I had replayed those words a hundred times. They still cut.

We reached a heavy double door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. Damien’s keycard failed twice before the lock finally released with a reluctant click. Inside was a small observation room looking through a one-way glass into a private medical bay.

My mother lay in the bed.

She looked smaller than I remembered. Pale. The oxygen tubing was still in place, monitors beeping in steady rhythm. No stranger with a syringe stood over her. The room appeared empty.

Then the intercom on the wall crackled to life.

Serena’s voice filled the space, smooth and venomous.

“Hello, little sister. I see you brought your husband. How romantic.”

Damien’s hand tightened on the gun at his side. “Where are you?”

“Close enough,” Serena answered. “Close enough to end this whenever I want. The nurse with the syringe is real, Lila. She’s simply waiting for my signal. One word and Mom’s heart stops. Permanently.”

I stepped toward the glass, palms pressing against the cold surface. “Serena, please. She’s our mother.”

“She’s my mother,” Serena snapped. “The one who always chose me until you decided to play house with Damien and ruin everything. Do you know what she said when I told her the full truth about the bribe? She cried, Lila. She said she wished it had been you in that hospital bed instead of her. She said you were always the weak one. The selfish one.”

The words landed like physical blows. I felt my knees weaken.

Damien’s arm came around my waist, steadying me. “Enough.”

“Is it?” Serena’s laugh was soft and cruel. “Ask her yourself. I left a phone on the bedside table. It’s on speaker. She’s awake now.”

On the other side of the glass, my mother’s eyes opened. She turned her head slowly toward a small black phone resting near her hand.

“Mom?” My voice broke.

There was a long pause. Then her voice—tired, bitter, and still full of the same disappointment I had carried my entire life—came through the intercom.

“Lila. Why are you still doing this? Serena told me everything. The drugs. The video. The way you trapped that man. You brought shame on this family. You always have. If you care about me at all, sign the papers. Leave. Let Serena have the life she deserves.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them. “I only did it for you. The money was for your treatments.”

“And look where it got us,” she answered. “I would rather die clean than live with a daughter who sells herself and destroys her sister.”

The line went quiet.

I stood frozen, forehead against the glass, the weight of every cruel word settling into my bones. The family had never been on my side. Not really. Serena had always been the favorite. I had always been the problem. And now even my mother preferred death to claiming me.

Damien turned me away from the glass and pulled me against his chest. His heartbeat was steady under my ear. One hand cradled the back of my head while the other rubbed slow circles between my shoulder blades.

“She is wrong,” he said quietly, fiercely. “You hear me? She is wrong about you. You are not selfish. You are not weak. You are the woman who kept choosing love even when it cost her everything. That is not shame. That is strength.”

I clung to him, shaking. “They all hate me.”

“I don’t.” His voice dropped lower, intimate, meant only for me. “I chose you in front of every one of them. I will keep choosing you. Even when you can’t choose yourself.”

He kissed the top of my head, then my temple, then the corner of my mouth—soft, deliberate anchors pulling me back from the edge.

The intercom crackled again.

Serena’s voice returned, colder now. “Touching. But the clock is still running. You have one hour to sign the annulment and transfer the assets. If the papers are not in my hands by then, the nurse walks into that room. And this time there will be no warning.”

The feed cut out.

Damien’s arms tightened around me for one more second before he released me and turned to his security team.

“Trace the signal. Lock down every exit from this sub-level. And get a medical team into that bay now—authorized or not.”

He looked back at me, eyes dark with both rage and something deeper.

“We are not losing her,” he said. “And we are not losing us.”

I wiped my face with the back of my hand and nodded, even though the weight of my family’s rejection still sat heavy in my chest.

Because for the first time, someone was standing between me and the people who had spent a lifetime making me feel small.

And I was terrified of how much I needed him to keep standing there.

A sudden alarm blared through the corridor.

Red lights began to strobe.

Marcus’s voice came over Damien’s earpiece, urgent and sharp.

“Sir—multiple hostiles just breached the sub-level from the service tunnels. They’re armed. And they’re heading straight for the medical bay.”

Damien’s hand found mine again.

The war had come inside the walls.

“East perimeter sensor just tripped. Single contact. Moving slow. No visual yet.”Damien’s hand found the weapon secured under the edge of the worktable. He did not raise his voice.
“Lights stay off. Cameras on passive. I want a clear shot of whoever is testing the line.”Lila sat up on the narrow couch. The thin blanket slipped from her shoulders. The air in the sealed room was cool against her skin. She watched Damien’s back as he leaned over the screens, the lines of his body rigid with focus. The red emergency indicators from the tower still flickered in the

Chapter 21: The Sirens Rise The emergency sirens cut through the boardroom like a blade. Red lights strobed across the glass walls and turned every face the color of blood. Outside the sealed doors Serena stood perfectly still, one hand still resting against the glass, her smile unchanged even as the corridor behind her filled with running security teams and the distant crack of overridden access panels. Damien’s fingers tightened around Lila’s. He did not look at the board. He looked only at the woman on the other side of the glass. “Marcus,” he said, voice flat. “Full lockdown on this floor. Isolate the external feeds. Cut every nonessential system between here and the private elevator.” Marcus was already moving. His phone was at his ear. Two of the personal security detail stepped in front of the doors, hands near their weapons but not yet drawn. The directors had risen from their chairs. Some stared at Serena. Others stared at Damien as if the sirens were his fault. Damien’s

Lila’s breath caught. Damien’s hand closed over hers on the door, hard enough to bruise, and he pulled her back three full steps without a word. His other hand was already on the security panel. “You can delay me for a few minutes, Damien. That’s all. The people who arranged my release own half the judges in this city and most of the federal contacts who matter. Open the door, or I will have it taken off its hinges.”Damien did not answer her. He turned to Lila instead. His eyes were flat and cold in a way she had only seen when he was about to end something permanently.
