Chapter 21: The Sirens Rise

The emergency sirens cut through the boardroom like a blade. Red lights strobed across the glass walls and turned every face the color of blood. Outside the sealed doors Serena stood perfectly still, one hand still resting against the glass, her smile unchanged even as the corridor behind her filled with running security teams and the distant crack of overridden access panels.

Damien’s fingers tightened around Lila’s. He did not look at the board. He looked only at the woman on the other side of the glass.

“Marcus,” he said, voice flat. “Full lockdown on this floor. Isolate the external feeds. Cut every nonessential system between here and the private elevator.”

Marcus was already moving. His phone was at his ear. Two of the personal security detail stepped in front of the doors, hands near their weapons but not yet drawn. The directors had risen from their chairs. Some stared at Serena. Others stared at Damien as if the sirens were his fault.

Damien’s father spoke first. “You brought this into the tower. You brought her into the tower.”

Damien ignored him. He turned Lila toward the side exit that led to the executive corridor. “We are leaving. The private elevator is still under our control.”

Lila’s pulse hammered in her throat. The residual weakness from the drug made her steps less steady than she wanted, but she matched his pace. Behind them one of the directors shouted something about liability and live cameras. Damien did not turn.

The side door opened onto a narrower hallway lit only by the emergency strips. The air already smelled of overheated electronics. Somewhere below them a heavy door slammed. Another alarm joined the first, higher and more urgent.

Damien kept her between his body and the wall. His free hand stayed near the small of her back, guiding without force. When they reached the private elevator bank he pressed his palm to the biometric panel. The light flashed green. The doors slid open.

Inside the car he finally spoke to her alone.

“Serena would not walk into this building with cameras running unless she believes she cannot lose. Someone higher than the board is shielding her. That changes the timeline.”

Lila swallowed. “What does that mean for us?”

“It means we stop reacting and start ending this.” He looked at her fully for the first time since the sirens began. The cold calculation in his eyes softened at the edges when they met hers. “You stay with me. No separate exits. No heroic ideas. Clear?”

“Clear.”

The elevator began its descent. The digital display showed the floors dropping in rapid succession. At the thirty-second level the car shuddered once. The lights flickered. Damien’s hand moved to the emergency stop, but the car continued.

Marcus’s voice came through the small speaker in the ceiling. “They are forcing the secondary systems. I have the private bay clear for another ninety seconds. After that the lower levels go dark.”

Damien answered without raising his voice. “Keep the car moving. Divert every available unit to the east stairwell. I want a path to the street.”

The doors opened on the restricted parking level. The black sedan sat exactly where they had left it, engine already running. Marcus stood beside the open rear door. Two more of Damien’s men flanked the vehicle, weapons visible now.

Lila slid into the back seat. Damien followed. The moment the door closed Marcus accelerated up the ramp. Rain still sheeted across the concrete. The exit barrier lifted on automatic recognition of the plates.

They were three blocks from the tower when the first news alert hit Damien’s phone. He glanced at the screen, then turned it so Lila could see.

The external feed from the boardroom had not been cut in time. A clipped segment was already circulating: Damien standing at the head of the table, Lila beside him, the moment he declared the marriage stood. Superimposed over the footage was a new image of Serena at the glass, smiling into the camera as if she had planned the entire sequence.

Lila’s stomach turned. “She wanted the cameras.”

“She wanted the narrative,” Damien said. “The kidnapped wife. The unstable husband. The board in chaos. She is framing the story while the city is still watching the old motel video.”

Marcus took a hard left onto a service road that ran parallel to the river. The buildings here were older, the streets narrower. He spoke without taking his eyes from the road.

“Safe house on the east side is compromised. Secondary location is still clean. Twenty minutes if the bridges stay open.”

Damien nodded once. He reached for Lila’s hand again. His thumb moved across her knuckles in a slow, deliberate stroke that had nothing to do with the violence behind them and everything to do with the fact that she was still breathing beside him.

“You have not eaten since the hospital,” he said. “There will be food at the secondary location. You will eat. Then we talk about the next move.”

She almost laughed at the ordinary order in the middle of the chaos. The sound came out rough. “You are still trying to take care of me while the entire city watches us burn.”

“I claimed you,” he answered. “That part does not pause for sirens.”

The car turned into an underground garage beneath a nondescript mid-rise. The gate closed behind them with a heavy metallic finality. Marcus parked beside a second identical sedan. No one spoke as they left the vehicle and crossed to a reinforced service door. Damien entered a code. The lock released.

Inside, the space was sparse but secure: concrete walls, no windows, a small kitchenette, a single bedroom, and a wall of monitors already showing live feeds from the tower and the major news channels. Marcus sealed the door and activated the internal system.

Damien guided Lila to the narrow couch and crouched in front of her. His hands rested on her knees. The contact was steady, grounding.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“The drug is still in your system. You are running on pure adrenaline and spite. That will not last. When the crash comes I need you somewhere safe. This is temporary. The next location will be farther out.”

She reached up and touched the edge of his jaw. The muscle there was tight. “You cannot protect me from everything, Damien.”

“I can try.”

The simple statement landed harder than any of the threats he had made in the boardroom. For a moment the sirens and the cameras and Serena’s smile faded. There was only the quiet of the sealed room and the weight of his hands on her legs.

Marcus cleared his throat from the monitor wall. “You need to see this.”

Damien rose and crossed to the screens. Lila followed. One feed showed the exterior of Voss Tower. Police vehicles now ringed the building. Another feed carried a live press conference. A federal agent stood at a podium, reading a prepared statement about ongoing investigations into corporate interference and possible witness intimidation. The agent did not name names, but the implication was clear.

A third screen showed a different angle of the boardroom. Serena was no longer outside the glass. She was inside. Two of the directors stood with her. Damien’s father was not among them.

Damien’s voice dropped. “She is already making deals.”

Lila watched the silent footage. Serena spoke with the calm of someone who had already won the next three moves. One of the directors nodded. Papers changed hands.

“What happens if the board votes you out?” Lila asked.

“Then I burn the company to the ground before I let her touch it,” Damien said. “But that is the last option. First we cut her support.”

He turned back to her. The intensity in his eyes had sharpened into something almost predatory.

“The people who freed her left a trail. Money moves. Favors are called in. Marcus already has the first set of names. By morning I will have the rest. Then we stop playing defense.”

Lila felt the residual fear from the concrete room surface again, cold and sharp. She pushed it down. “And until morning?”

Damien stepped closer. His hand settled at the side of her neck, thumb resting against the pulse point. The contact was possessive and careful at the same time.

“Until morning you rest. You eat. You let me keep you safe for a few hours while the city loses its mind. After that we go on the offensive together.”

She leaned into the touch. The sirens were still audible in the distance, a low continuous wail that refused to fade. On the monitors Serena continued her quiet conversation with the directors who had already chosen their side.

Damien’s phone vibrated once. He glanced at the message, then locked the screen without answering.

“Marcus,” he said. “Double the perimeter. No one enters this level without my direct authorization. And get the medical kit. I want her levels checked again.”

Marcus moved at once.

Damien stayed where he was, hand still at Lila’s neck, eyes on the screens. The red emergency lights from the tower reflected in the glass of the monitors like distant blood. Outside the sealed door the city continued its loud, public unraveling. Inside the quiet room the only sound was the steady rhythm of Lila’s breathing and the low hum of the security system holding the line for one more night.
