Two Years Ago - Thade’s POV

Summer in the Year 514

It’s late at night, the hours starting to stretch towards the morning. I should be fast asleep, my body aches, muscles burning from exertion. But despite the storm that’s raging over the city, I can’t sleep. Thunder cracks and rolls, shaking the tiles of the barrack roof overhead. Through the thin walls that separate my small rooms from the next Knights, I can hear Iron snoring.

I kick back in my chair, staring at the window and the flash of lightning bleeds across the sky in electric blue. There has to be a way forward, I know that there is. I just haven't found it yet. I push my fingers through my hair. My body is tired from the long journey back from Boren. After twelve days camping on hard and dusty ground, I was ready to fall into bed. Any bed.

As a Knight, I can use a room at the Barracks whenever needed. They’re collections of long low buildings at different points in the city, and when I arrived to drop off Iron, I was too tired to face the journey through the summer crowd lining the city streets. The desk gave me the room next to Iron’s and I thought I was ready to collapse, but the second I stepped through the door I knew I wasn’t going to sleep.

The lightning rolls again, crashing down over the city with the rain that came faster than a riptide. There’s a face a the window. Pale, fleeting. I blink, staring at the open curtains and blink. Maybe I’m starting to lose my mind. Why would someone be standing outside in the downpour? I shake my head, dismissing the idea. Then there’s a knock on the door.

I stand, watching the door. It’s late. Far too late for visitors and no one knows that I’m here. There’s another knock, loud, insistent and the last thing I need, is Iron waking up. He was injured on a bandit jump three days out from the city. He’s the reason my troop has been riding through the nights and racing to get back to Soln. To get him to a healer before infection can set in.

I cross the floorboards, ignoring the way they squeak under my weight. The door is shaking on its hinges and I’m pissed off now. Whatever drunk trick one of the recruits wanted to play, they’re going to learn the meaning of trouble. I grip the handle, tearing the door open wide and she falls in. Her hand lifted to pound against the door she’s off balance and crashes forward. Her pale green eyes are wide, surprised as she bounces off the door and drops.

I could catch her. I see it all in slow motion as her lips part in a yelp, her shoulder twisting her body to the side as she tries to catch her fall. She’s soaked through. A simple blue is plastered against her shoulders and the curve of her breast. Her skin shimmers and if it wasn’t for the fact she was falling, I’d say I’d never seen someone who looked so much like a goddess. All beautiful curves and creamy skin. The wolf within me awakens.

I move faster than I ever have. I thought about not catching her, because my entire body has jolted. As though I’ve been struck by the lightning outside. Touching her is dangerous, but there’s nothing I can do to stop myself from reaching out. My arm slides beneath hers and I steady her fall. I can feel her sudden breath against my cheek and it sets me on fire.

‘Oh!’ She blinks as she stumbles, half crumpled forward with my arm beneath her chest and looped under her arm. I can feel her breasts pressing against my bare forearm and I feel like a teenager. I pull her up, setting her back on her feet. She’s taller than most, curvaceous and the rain that’s covered her is pooling in the centre of her neck then running in a distracting line down between her breasts. My wolf is rising within, I want her. It growls and sends a shockwave through me.

‘There you are, miss,’ I pull away from her. Dropping my hands to my sides as though I’ve been burnt. I stare at her, what is this intensity? Why is it hitting me now?

‘I’m so sorry,’ she straightens up, her cheek flushed as she meets my eyes for a second. Her eyes are green, I’m sure of it. But I didn’t light any candles and without the flicker of lightning, it’s hard to see her in the perfect detail I’m desperate to imagine.

‘No harm-’ I wave her apology away, taking control of my Wolf. I peer at the door. The most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on, has just fallen, damp and enticing into my room and into my arms. Maybe fate has been kind and there’s a reason I couldn’t sleep tonight. My frustration at waking Iron has vanished. Blown away like a cobweb in a hurricane. ‘I’m just…’ I can’t help the small smile that pulls at the corner of my mouth. I want her. I want her and it’s hard to stay focused on stepping back and giving her space as she looks around, confused. ‘I’m just confused as to why you wanted to break my door down?’ I touch my tongue to the edge of my teeth.

She pulls her bottom lip into her mouth, her eyes squinting slightly in the darkness. The lightning flashes behind her once more and my body responds. Hard and aching. I’m going to have this woman. I’m going to see her lips swollen from my kisses, and Iron be damned. I’m going to have screaming in desire beneath me.

‘Because it’s raining,’ she answers as though it’s the simplest explanation in the world. She’s standing up straighter, staring at me once more. I can see the rapid rise and fall of her chest and I love the way the water is soaking more and more into the flimsy fabric of her chest.

‘It is raining,’ I can’t help but grin, the silliest smile I’ve ever worn, because truly I must have been blessed by the Otherworld tonight. ‘But I don’t know your name, and I didn’t think anyone knew that I was here.’

‘Why would they know you were here?’ She tilts her head to the side, that same squint teasing a light line between her eyes.

‘To send me a whore who’d brighten the shit storm of a season I’m having,’ I reach out, touching my fingers to the edge of her face as the door eventually swings back on it’s hinges and closes behind her. We’re left in the dark and she yelps again. The sound is soft, and sweet. Almost innocent.

‘T-the wh-’ her words are mumbled, her lips trembling as I shake my head.

  • The Bride Wore Blood   62 - Back into trouble

Lana’s POVIt’s hard to explain the withering feeling within as Thade turns to me with his accusation. The same creeping feeling of sickness moving through my body, the numbness in my limbs as realisation settles. He still doesn’t trust me. He can wear me down, be intimate with me and it doesn’t mean the same to him.I take a slow step back, shaking my head.‘No,’ I reply, voice soft with defeat. ‘No I didn’t tell anyone, this is the first time I’ve left the Palace in over a Month, I just want to enjoy my freedom and not be attacked.’He watches me, reaching out to touch a hand to my shoulder, his expression softening as the adrenaline surge starts to ease from his body. I take another step back, hurt by his accusations.‘You’ve got blood…’ I lift my hand to my cheek. His jaw is coated in blood, it’s splattered over his bare torso and a body barely covered in tattered clothes. He hesitates for a heart beat before turning and walking away to catch Koal and pulls spare breeches and a tu

  • The Bride Wore Blood   61 - Bandits

‘Who told you?’ Lana nudges her horse a step forward, even though Ember lifts her head, tossing her mane. I nudge Koal alongside her, unwilling to let my wife out of reach. Did she plan this? She certainly doesn’t seem afraid or surprised as I would have expected. ‘Never you mind, Majesty,’ the man smiles from where he stands. He’s holding a mace in his hand, the large spiked metal end is a menacing threat that he taps his fingers again. ‘But you’ll be coming with us.’‘No I won’t,’ Lana replies before I can signal her to stop. I’m impressed by her courage, but the Lana I know is usually quite timid when faced with danger. ‘I won’t be going anywhere,’ she sounds certain and as confused as I am I can only respect her audacity.‘We don’t want to hurt nobody,’ the man looks over to me with a sneer. He could have been the brother of the drunk who fell against our bedroom door. He has the same protruding belly and greasy hair trying to escape from his head. The same dark eyes. I sniff th

  • The Bride Wore Blood   60 - In every shadow

I’m on my feet, Lana rolling away across the sheets of the bed. It takes two strides to cross the room and pull the door open. A man tumbles in, falling on his side. His eyes wide as he stares up at my naked bollocks. He’s balding, his left over hair clings to the side of his head like an unwelcome vine on a house. I reach down, hauling him to his feet as Kalik reacts to the stench long before I can. It hits me hard and I hold the man away from myself, hanging him from the sweat drenched collar of his shirt.‘What are you doing here?’ I demand, hoping that I’m blocking enough sight of Lana with my body in the door. His eyes roll in his head as he squints, trying to focus on me. His face is red and puffy and the overwhelming reek is alcohol in his sweat.‘Ish my room!’ He protests and I sigh, I cross the corridor to the room I was assigned, tear open the door and throw him in. I don’t have time or the energy for such pettiness or to take revenge on a drunk. I turn back to the room, t

  • The Bride Wore Blood   59 - Safety

I don’t remember drifting off to sleep. The room is hot and stuffy without the air moving beyond the window. Summer heat bakes down on all of Illure and is trapped within the four walls. We’re still lying atop the covers, but fully dressed. I’m far too hot, sweat coating my skin beneath my clothes. One minute Thade and I were talking about magic seeping away from Illure and trying to replace it by increasing the population of Otherworld and then there’s just oblivion. Dreams I don’t remember as I lay awake, the sun beating down on the forests and the fields beyond as I watch him in his sleep. He looks peaceful, the lines of his face softened. His beard has grown back in the weeks since the wedding and covers his jaw and top lip. His mouth is soft, lips full beneath the line of his nose and the heavy set of his brows. Have I ever seen him so close in daylight? His lashes are impossibly long and beautiful. I want to let him rest. He clearly needs sleep. Yet there’s a gnawing worry in my

  • The Bride Wore Blood   58 - Fear

Thade’s POVI stroke my thumb over Lana’s cheek. It’s hard to define what I feel when I’m close to her. A longing to be closer still. To meet Kilak’s demands and make her my bonded mate, to claim her as a Wolf and mark her. It’s a demand that’s growing harder to fight, especially when she looks up at me with her beautiful green eyes, with trust.I take a slow step back and offer my hand to my wife. She accepts, frowning in a way I’ve come to recognise. She’s not sure of my intentions but she’s willing to play along for now.‘We should get some rest,’ I offer her what I hope is a comforting smile. I feel completely drained, but at least Lana no longer thinks I killed my old friend and mentor, Adulphus. I wanted to talk outside of the room where he died, because it’s not somewhere I enjoy standing.I lead Lana out into the corridor where Moira has been waiting patiently. She looks between us and I can hear her scorn in my head.Seriously, you’re playing nice with the Nix?I don’t reply,

  • The Bride Wore Blood   57 - What the Heart Knows

'What do you see?' Thade's voice was a low vibration, barely audible over the sudden, thrumming silence of the room. He kept his distance, a predator giving its prey just enough room to breathe, yet his presence was a heavy weight against my skin. I closed my eyes, forcing myself back into the jagged shards of that memory. The room in my mind began to shimmer, the mundane furniture dissolving into a complex web of arcane energy. It was a suffocating lattice of light, criss-crossed with a magic that felt both ancient and erratic.'You,' I whispered, my voice trembling as the vision intensified. 'I see your magic. That raw, power that pulses like a second heartbeat when we're close.' I found myself chewing on my bottom lip, the metallic tang of blood a sharp contrast to the ethereal sights. 'I see it beneath your skin sometimes, a swirling blue choked with storm-clouds of grey. Back then, the entire room was saturated with it. It was like breathing in lightning.' I let out a long, shaky

I walk away from Tim, telling myself that I’m overreacting. That he wasn’t too close and I must have imagined him trying to touch my hair. I stroke the strands back into place, tucking them behind my ear. By the time I’ve reached the end of the corridor, I’ve managed to calm my heart rate. It was j

Coy? I don’t think I’ve ever played coy, I wouldn’t even know what it is. I feel all the air trapped in my lungs, like there isn’t enough space for it. They’re burning but I can’t think beyond the sense of his face so close to mine. The overwhelming awareness of the heat from his bare body and his c

Two Years Ago - Lana’s POV ‘You can just stay with us,’ Rune shouts over the loud crack of thunder as we race across the courtyard. The water that splashes up from the puddles is warm against my ankles but the heavy rain hurts. Pinging against my face as we run. I look across at her, her short b

  • The Bride Wore Blood   1 - Unbreakable Vow

Lana Air won't reach my lungs. My heart hammers an erratic rhythm against my ribs, aching. On the other side of the doors, the Nobility of Illure wait to watch me marry a monster. ‘You should be excited, Lana!’ My mother squeezes my fingers as I bend double, gasping. ‘I'm not going to do it.’
