The Rules Begin to Break

Morning arrived quietly at Blackwood Tower.

Eva woke to sunlight spilling through unfamiliar curtains.

For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember where she was.

Then reality returned.

Blackwood Tower.

The wedding.

Adrian.

The ring.

Her hand instinctively moved toward the platinum band resting on her finger.

She stared at it.

Yesterday, she had been Eva Hart.

Today, she was Mrs. Blackwood.

The title still felt strange.

Almost like it belonged to someone else.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in."

A member of the household staff stepped inside.

"Good morning, Mrs. Blackwood. Mr. Blackwood asked me to let you know that breakfast is ready."

"Thank you."

The woman left.

Eva slowly got out of bed.

Before she could take another step, her phone vibrated.

Her heart jumped.

She grabbed it immediately.

A message from St. Mary's Hospital.

Dr. Collins will be available to speak with you this morning regarding Noah's procedure.

Eva released a shaky breath.

She hadn't realized how tightly she'd been holding it.

Noah.

Everything still came back to him.

She quickly got dressed and left the room.

---

Adrian was already seated at the breakfast table when Eva entered.

He was dressed in a dark suit, his attention focused on several documents spread across the table.

He looked up.

For a brief moment, his expression changed.

Eva wasn't dressed like a bride anymore.

There was no carefully arranged ceremony dress.

No formal hairstyle.

No room full of witnesses.

Just Eva.

And somehow, seeing her like that made her seem more real.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good morning."

She sat opposite him.

Adrian noticed the phone in her hand.

"Hospital?"

She nodded.

"They want to speak with me about Noah."

"They'll call soon."

Eva looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"I asked Daniel to confirm."

She smiled faintly.

"Of course you did."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She reached for her tea.

"You just seem to have an answer for everything."

"I don't."

"You certainly act like you do."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"That's because uncertainty isn't particularly useful."

Eva shook her head.

"You're impossible."

"I've been told."

For a few moments, breakfast was surprisingly peaceful.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

"Daniel."

He answered.

"Yes."

Eva continued eating quietly while listening to only half the conversation.

Then Adrian's expression changed.

"How many?"

A pause.

"Three major outlets."

Another pause.

"Do they have her name?"

Eva stopped eating.

Adrian's eyes briefly moved toward her.

"No."

Relief washed over her.

"Keep it that way."

He listened.

"Understood."

The call ended.

Eva put down her spoon.

"More reporters?"

"Yes."

"About the photograph?"

"And the wedding."

She sighed.

"I suppose we should have expected this."

"We did."

"But that doesn't make it less annoying."

"No."

She looked at him.

"Do you ever get annoyed?"

"Frequently."

"You hide it well."

"I have practice."

Eva smiled.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

"Dr. Collins."

Eva's heart began beating faster.

She watched his expression carefully.

"Yes."

A pause.

"When?"

Another pause.

"Understood."

He ended the call.

Eva leaned forward.

"What did he say?"

"They're preparing Noah for the procedure."

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"Today?"

"Yes."

She nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Adrian studied her.

"You don't have to be strong every second."

She looked down.

"I know."

"You've been doing it for too long."

Her eyes lifted to his.

For once, there was no teasing in his voice.

No businesslike detachment.

Just quiet understanding.

Eva swallowed.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"What if something goes wrong?"

"We'll deal with it if it does."

She frowned.

"That's not very comforting."

"It's honest."

She gave a tiny laugh despite herself.

"You're terrible at comforting people."

"I'm learning."

She looked at him.

"You're learning?"

"Apparently."

Something warm flickered in her chest.

She ignored it.

---

An hour later, Eva found herself standing inside Adrian's office.

She had intended to stay in the guest suite.

Instead, Daniel had delivered several documents requiring her signature, and Adrian had asked her to wait in his office while he dealt with the board.

Eva sat on the sofa, looking around.

The office was exactly what she expected.

Expensive.

Minimal.

Immaculately organized.

There wasn't a single unnecessary object.

She glanced at the large painting hanging across from her.

"That's beautiful."

Adrian looked up from his desk.

"The painting?"

"Yes."

He followed her gaze.

"My mother chose it."

Eva's expression softened.

"I didn't know."

"There are many things you don't know about me."

"Clearly."

She looked at the painting again.

"She must have had good taste."

A quiet smile appeared on Adrian's face.

"She did."

Eva turned toward him.

"You loved her."

It wasn't really a question.

His expression changed slightly.

"Very much."

She immediately regretted asking.

"I'm sorry."

"You don't have to be."

He returned his attention to the documents.

Eva watched him for a moment.

There was something different about him when he talked about his mother.

Less guarded.

Less like the untouchable businessman everyone else saw.

More human.

Her eyes returned to the painting.

"She must have been important to you."

"She was."

A pause.

"Still is."

Eva smiled faintly.

"That's nice."

Adrian looked up.

"What?"

"That you still talk about her that way."

He didn't answer.

But something in his expression softened.

Before either could say anything else, Daniel knocked and entered.

"Sir, the board meeting is ready."

Adrian nodded.

"I'll be there."

Daniel glanced at Eva.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

She still wasn't used to hearing it.

"Daniel."

He smiled before leaving.

Eva stood.

"You should go."

Adrian gathered his documents.

"I'll be back."

"You don't have to tell me."

"I know."

She smiled.

"You really like saying that."

"I've noticed."

He walked toward the door.

Eva followed him.

Just before they stepped into the corridor, Adrian stopped.

"Eva."

She looked up.

"If anyone from the media approaches you, don't answer their questions."

"I won't."

"Even if they claim to know Noah?"

Her expression immediately changed.

"I won't."

"Good."

He continued walking.

She followed.

But as they reached the elevator, Eva noticed something.

Adrian had positioned himself between her and the open corridor.

She looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I was just wondering."

"About?"

"Whether you always protect everyone around you like this."

He looked at her.

"No."

"Then why me?"

His gaze held hers for a second longer than necessary.

"Because you're my wife."

The elevator doors opened.

Eva stepped inside.

Adrian followed.

Neither said anything else.

But the words stayed with her.

Because for the first time, she wasn't sure whether he had said them because of the marriage contract...

Or because he was beginning to mean them.

The elevator doors closed.

Eva stood beside Adrian, suddenly far too aware of how small the space felt.

Neither of them spoke.

The words he'd said moments ago continued replaying in her mind.

Because you're my wife.

She looked at the numbers above the doors.

"Do you say that to remind yourself?"

Adrian glanced at her.

"Remind myself of what?"

"That we're married."

His expression remained calm.

"Do you need reminding?"

"No."

"Then why ask?"

Eva shrugged.

"I don't know."

The elevator continued upward.

She glanced at him.

"You really don't make things easy."

"I wasn't aware I was supposed to."

A smile tugged at her lips.

"See?"

"See what?"

"Impossible."

The elevator doors opened before he could respond.

Adrian stepped out first.

Eva followed.

---

The board meeting lasted nearly two hours.

Eva waited in the private lounge outside, trying not to look at the clock every few minutes.

She failed.

Eventually, Daniel appeared.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

She immediately stood.

"How is the meeting?"

"Still going."

She sighed.

"And Noah?"

Daniel's expression softened.

"The hospital hasn't reported any complications."

Eva closed her eyes briefly.

"Thank God."

"Mr. Blackwood asked me to tell you the moment we received any news."

She nodded.

"Thank you."

Daniel hesitated.

"He's taking this seriously."

Eva looked at him.

"Adrian?"

"Yes."

She lowered her gaze.

"I know."

Daniel gave her a knowing look but said nothing.

Before he could leave, the boardroom doors opened.

Adrian stepped out.

His tie was slightly loosened, and he looked more tired than he had earlier.

His eyes immediately found Eva.

"Any news?"

She shook her head.

"Nothing yet."

He nodded.

"Come."

"Where?"

"The hospital."

Her eyes widened.

"Now?"

"Now."

---

The drive to St. Mary's was quiet.

Eva sat beside Adrian in the back seat, staring through the window.

She hadn't expected him to come with her.

"You don't have to stay," she said quietly.

"I know."

She smiled.

"Of course."

He looked at her.

"I'm staying because I want to."

The words caught her off guard.

She looked at him.

Adrian seemed to realize what he'd said.

He turned toward the window.

Eva did the same.

Neither spoke again.

But something had shifted.

---

By the time they reached the hospital, the rain had started.

Security escorted them through a private entrance.

The halls were quiet.

Eva sat in the waiting area while Adrian stood nearby, speaking quietly with Daniel over the phone.

Every few minutes, she glanced toward the operating room.

Finally, she couldn't take the waiting anymore.

She stood.

Adrian ended his call.

"Where are you going?"

"I need air."

"It's raining."

"I know."

He studied her face.

"Eva."

"I'll be outside for a minute."

He followed her.

The covered balcony overlooked the hospital courtyard.

Rain fell steadily beyond the roof.

Eva leaned against the railing.

"I hate waiting."

Adrian stood beside her.

"I know."

"I keep thinking about everything that could go wrong."

"Don't."

She looked at him.

"How do I stop?"

"You don't."

His voice was quiet.

"You just remember that you've done everything you could."

Eva looked down.

"Have I?"

"You saved him."

She shook her head.

"No. You did."

"I helped."

"You paid for everything."

"And you gave him a reason to keep fighting."

Her eyes filled with tears.

She quickly looked away.

Adrian noticed.

"Eva."

"I'm okay."

"You don't have to say that."

A tear escaped before she could stop it.

She wiped it away.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Crying."

He frowned slightly.

"You apologize for everything."

"Maybe because I'm always causing problems."

"You aren't."

She looked at him.

"Then what am I?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained on her.

"Someone who has been carrying too much alone."

Eva's throat tightened.

She looked away.

"You're making this very difficult."

"What?"

"Being around you."

His expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because I don't know what we're doing anymore."

Neither moved.

The rain filled the silence around them.

Eva continued quietly.

"We started this because we needed something from each other."

"I know."

"And now..."

She stopped.

"Now what?"

"I don't know."

Adrian took a slow breath.

"Neither do I."

That honesty made her look at him again.

They were standing closer than she had realized.

Neither stepped away.

Eva's eyes dropped briefly.

Then returned to his.

Adrian noticed.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The world seemed to become very quiet.

He lifted his hand, hesitated, then gently brushed away the tear still resting near her cheek.

Eva froze.

The gesture was simple.

Almost nothing.

Yet her heart raced.

Adrian's hand fell back to his side.

"We should go inside."

Eva nodded.

"Yes."

Neither moved.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

And this time, neither of them looked away.

Adrian leaned closer.

Slowly.

Giving her every opportunity to step back.

She didn't.

Their lips met in a brief, gentle kiss.

It lasted only a moment.

But the moment was enough.

Eva pulled back first.

Her eyes widened.

Adrian looked just as surprised.

Neither spoke.

The rain continued falling behind them.

Eva touched her lips instinctively.

"We..."

She couldn't finish.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"Yes."

"That wasn't..."

"I know."

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

"I know."

They stared at each other.

Neither seemed to know what to say next.

Then Eva gave a nervous laugh.

"This is going to make things complicated."

A faint smile appeared on Adrian's face.

"They already were."

She shook her head.

"You're not supposed to agree."

"I don't think I'm very good at following the rules anymore."

Her smile disappeared for a second.

Not because she was upset.

Because she realized he was right.

The rules had been simple at the beginning.

No expectations.

No emotions.

No attachments.

But somewhere along the way, the lines had started becoming harder to see.

Before either could say anything else, Adrian's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Yes?"

His expression changed.

Eva watched him closely.

"He's out?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

Eva's breath caught.

"Noah?"

Adrian nodded.

"Dr. Collins says the procedure is complete."

Tears filled Eva's eyes again.

"Is he okay?"

"He made it through."

She covered her mouth.

A sob of relief escaped her.

Adrian ended the call and looked at her.

For a second, the kiss was forgotten.

Eva smiled through her tears.

"He's okay."

"He's okay."

She laughed softly.

Then, without thinking, she stepped forward and hugged him.

Adrian froze.

It was the first time she'd initiated any kind of affection between them.

After a moment, he gently returned the embrace.

Neither said anything.

They simply stood there.

Two people who had entered a marriage expecting nothing from each other.

And now...

Neither was quite sure what they were becoming.

When they finally pulled apart, Eva wiped her eyes.

"Thank you."

Adrian looked at her.

"For Noah?"

"For everything."

His expression softened.

"You don't have to thank me."

She smiled.

"I know."

For the first time, he smiled too.

And neither of them mentioned the kiss again.

But both of them knew it had changed something.

The rules of their marriage had always been written in ink.

Now, for the first time...

They were beginning to blur.
