Blake’s Pov

Somewhere around noon, the woman woke up as we all sat down in the living room, and Nabi came to announce it. “Alpha, the woman is now awake.” she said.

I jumped to my feet, walking towards her to go to the room before anyone else could react. I didn't even wait for Ridge’s question, but I heard them perfectly.

“Oh really? Are you sure?” I could hear the doubt in his voice and that was just silly, because this was great news, and he had no reason to doubt anything.

I walked down the hall to the room as I heard the footsteps of others behind me.

The air in the hallway felt heavier with every step I took, like it was bracing for whatever was waiting on the other side of the door. My pulse picked up, not from fear exactly, but from anticipation. Answers. That’s what this woman might have.

When I reached the door, I didn’t hesitate. I pushed it open and stepped inside.

She was sitting up in the bed, her back pressed against the headboard, a blanket draped loosely ov

Forty-five minutes felt like forty-five years while I waited for the time to get here. I couldn’t sit still at all as I was restless, thinking about what to do and what to say when my mother arrived. I had perched on the edge of the bed, then stood up for a while, only to sit back down again. My legs wouldn’t stop moving, and every time I tried to steady my hands, they betrayed me; my fingers fidgeting with the hem of my shirt, twisting in my hair, tapping against my thigh like a drumbeat I couldn’t shut off. I was really nervous, really nervous, and this was why Ridge had told me I didn't have to do this. I did understand his point of view, but I hoped that he understood mine as well. My eyes kept darting to the mirror across the room. I didn’t even know why. Maybe because I couldn’t stop wondering what she looked like now. Would she still look like the woman I remembered? That perfectly pressed hair, that polished smile, lipstick always in place? Or would she look older now, w

Blake’s Pov“You don’t have to do this.” Ridge said, looking at me so keenly, as if I might do something irrational if I was left alone. I sighed with a shake of my head, and looked away. “It's fine, Ridge. I told you, I'm doing this because I want to.” I said. He scoffed. “Or because you think you have to,” he said and I glared at him. Why does he have to be right about that anyway? I hated the fact that he was hitting the nail right on the head, because it was exactly why I was meeting my mother today. Yesterday during the call, she had told me she was in town and would like to see me. She said she had gone to look for me and my old boss gave her my number. I wanted to cuss at Salvo for doing that, giving out my number without asking me, but I also wanted to see her, because there were lots of questions I would like to ask her, like why she left me here for instance, with a murdering bastard. I had reluctantly told her I was going to meet her, but when Ridge came back home a

Blake’s PovFor what seemed like an eternity, all I could do was stare down at the phone, like it was something I couldn't touch. My father? Now it made sense how weird the number looked, but that wasn't the point. How did he got this number? I had nothing to do with him, and likewise. “Are you there, Blake?” he asked and I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly painful, constricting and choking. I didn't know what to say, whether not to say a word and pretend it was a wrong number, or whether not to even say anything until the call ended. Either way, I was still feeling like I might die from the way my heart was jumping wildly. “I know you're there, and you can hear me. The least you can do for your father after sending him to prison, is answer his call. You wouldn't even visit me here.” he said. I still couldn't say anything after that, and Julia, my life saving Julia, spoke instead of me. Julia’s voice came out firm, sharp in a way I had rarely heard from her. “You don’t

Blake’s Pov It had been a week since I left the hospital, but Ridge wouldn't let me leave this room. He wouldn't even let me lift a single thing myself, as much as I wanted to do so. So I was here in the room with Kenny, Julia and Nina with me, and we were all hanging out, laughing about how much Ridge had freaked out when I was back at the hospital. “I remember him growling at all the nurses that came in to give you the insulin needed. He kept acting like they were hurting you.” Julia said, laughing. Kenny shook her head as if she couldn't believe them. “Wow, I’m sure all that happened all right. I mean, I'm human, but I would be very scared too if a leader of a pack was growling at me.” She said. Julia snorted, tossing her braid over her shoulder. “You should’ve seen the poor nurse’s face. She was trembling so badly she nearly dropped the syringe. I thought Ridge was going to snap it in half himself.” I groaned, covering my face with both hands, just as Nina said. “Oh my G

Blake’s PovThe heavy feel of my eyelids was starting to tire the shit out of me, especially now that I knew I was conscious. I could feel the heat on my skin, and I could hear the steady beep of something close by, rhythmic, too measured to be natural. It wasn’t part of me, not really, but somehow it anchored me, told me I wasn’t completely gone. It took me a minute to calm myself down instead of freaking out like I would normally do when I realized I couldn’t open my eyes. My chest rose, but it felt shallow, weak, as if my lungs weren’t mine anymore. I told myself to stay still, to listen, to wait, and I was still doing that when it happened. Like a shadow sweeping over me, the world shifted. One moment I was trapped in the weight of my own body, and the next I was standing in the middle of the woods. Not just any woods… the woods. The smoky haze, the branches arching above like claws, the ground damp beneath my bare feet. My heart stuttered because I knew this place. I had walk

Ridge’s Pov“I think releasing him like you suggested would lead us to Ryder, alpha.” Roman said and I nodded. He was talking about the delivery guy, the one that had brought my wife the flowers on our wedding day, but I wasn't thinking much about that. All I could think about was the meeting with the elders, telling them everything that had been happening, blackmailing them emotionally if I had to for the nuisance they had allowed. Oh yeah, I found out Clarissa had approached them and told them I “abandoned” her with Honey, and didn't want to have anything to do with me, and instead of coming to me to ask if I was true, they told her she could announce it to the pack, so that way I would take responsibility. Such prudence. Roman shifted on his feet, watching me carefully, and as if he could read my mind, he said. “You sure you want to take this to the elders yourself, Alpha? They won’t like being cornered.” A humorless laugh tore from my chest. “Good. Let them choke on their
