Chapter 1

The ashes of the bonfire were still smoking at my feet.

"Avery."

Hudson's voice came from behind me. I didn't turn around, and instead just wiped the corners of my eyes with the back of my hand.

"What are you doing standing here alone?" He walked up to me, his brows furrowed. "The party is over."

I didn't speak. The surrounding wolves were still rowdy. People were whistling, fighting, and howling. The waves of sound crashed over me, piercing my eardrums like needles.

My mental walls were naturally thin, making the noise feel like torture to me. I instinctively covered my ears and crouched down.

"Again?" Hudson crouched down, pulled a pair of noise-canceling headphones out of his pocket, and put them directly over my ears.

The world went quiet in an instant.

"Thanks," I whispered.

"I've got training in a bit," he said, standing up and brushing the dust off his pants.

"I'll come get you when it's over. Don't walk back alone in the dark."

"Wait for me here."

For a brief moment, I started lying to myself. Maybe the stray thought I caught earlier was really just a hallucination caused by my weak walls.

He still took care of me.

Immediately after, a few of his friends ran over and dragged him away to the training field.

He told me to wait for him by the field, so I stayed right where I was. That wait lasted exactly two whole hours.

The wind around the training field blew harder and harder. I curled up on the bench, my teeth chattering.

The price of having a weak wolf was that I couldn't regulate my body temperature like others. The cold seeped into my bones bit by bit, and my fingers had already gone numb from the freezing wind.

It wasn't until I was shivering all over that Kevin walked by and noticed me.

Seeing how terrible I looked, he offered to escort me back.

I shook my head. I was afraid that when Hudson came out he would only see an empty bench.

I had promised to wait for him. I couldn't break my word, so I just asked Kevin to mind-link Hudson for me.

Ten minutes later, Hudson ran out of the woods, panting heavily.

"Why didn't you contact me? You just sat out in the cold wind for that long?"

I pointed at my head and gave a helpless shrug.

The truth was, my wolf was too weak to support a mind-link. My phone was dead, too, so I simply had no way to reach him.

If I hadn't run into Kevin, I really didn't know how long I would have waited.

Hudson suddenly realized his mistake. A flash of guilt crossed his face, but in the end, he offered no explanation.

He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. "Let's go. Let's go home."

Walking along the small dirt path, he didn't say a word. His fingers were just tapping rapidly on his phone screen.

A strong scent drifted into my nose along with the night breeze. It was heavy and dominant.

I knew for a fact he didn't have that scent on him before he went to the training field.

As we got close to the edge of the woods near my house, someone called out to Hudson.

That overpowering scent hit my face, and Hudson walked straight toward them.

"Why are you guys here?"

"The party is just on the other side of the woods. We came to grab you on the way." The girl's voice was confident and loud.

I recognized her as Clara Vance. She was the top student in the academy and the most dazzling presence on the cheer squad.

And I recognized the hoodie she was wearing, too. It was Hudson's favorite one.

"Alright. Give me a minute. I'll drop her off first," Hudson replied casually.

Clara's best friend rolled her eyes and let out a scoff. "Oh, if it isn't Hudson's little shadow."

She looked me up and down. "Playing the victim so someone will come save you again? If your wolf is useless, just stay inside and stop embarrassing yourself."

"She's not faking it." Hudson frowned, his voice so low it was almost inaudible. "Avery has bad night vision. It's too dark out here."

"Not faking it?" The girl continued. "Tonight is Clara's night, and she's insisting on dragging you down. What a buzzkill."

My face burned, and my chest felt tight.

"Go with them. I can walk back by myself."

"Are you sure? You..."

I didn't wait for him to finish. I limped away into the pitch-black path.

Faint, cruel laughter drifted from behind me.

"Hey, Hudson. Are you really not going to babysit your weakling?"

"Drop it."

"Hahaha..."

My footsteps froze. In the past, if anyone dared to make fun of my weakness, he wouldn't hesitate to bare his fangs.

But now, he barely even defended me. Was it because that person was Clara?

The woods were so dark I couldn't see my own hands, and tree roots twisted across the ground.

Distracted and walking too fast, my foot slipped. I fell hard, and a sharp pain shot through my ankle.

My eyes stung. It felt so incredibly unfair. Hudson never used to be like this.

Growing up, he always held my hand tightly whenever we walked through these woods. When did I turn into a burden he was so eager to shake off?

Footsteps quickly approached. "Avery!"

The bushes behind me were roughly pushed aside. Hudson rushed over and pulled me up from the ground.

"Why are you trying to act so tough?"

He crouched down, his fingers brushing my swollen ankle. His movements, however, were extremely gentle.

"Hold on," he said. Then he turned his back to me and crouched lower. "Get on."

I leaned against his back, breathing in his familiar scent.

That little flame in my chest sparked to life once again.

He still cared about me.

Over the three months since I said those words, Hudson truly kept his promise. He never made me shed another tear. Not even for a single second. The wounds on his shoulder had long since healed, but the careful, tender way he treated me hadn't diminished in the slightest."Avery, it's my turn," Hudson's voice sounded close to my ear, carrying a hint of barely detectable nervousness.I looked up.It was Oakhaven University's Spring Ball. Crystal chandeliers cast a soft glow over the students twirling on the dance floor in their colorful evening gowns and suits.I was wearing a pale silver gown, the hem flowing like liquid moonlight.Hudson wore a sharply tailored dark suit, standing right by my side like a fierce protector who refused to leave my side for even a moment. For the past three months, he had escorted me to and from every class, accompanied me through every lab experiment, and whenever my mental barrier training pushed me to the brink of collapse, he was always there, using h

"Does it hurt?"I asked, my voice trembling slightly as I held a piece of gauze, carefully cleaning the three deep gashes on Hudson's shoulder. He sat on the bed in the infirmary, his shoulder bare. His muscles were pulled tight, yet he was unusually obedient, not letting out a single groan."No." He shook his head, though his eyes never left my face for a second. My fingers trembled slightly, and my eyes unknowingly grew red.Blood was still seeping from the wounds. With every swipe of the gauze, his muscles would flinch slightly, yet a faint, barely-there smile remained on his lips."Stop pretending. How can a wound this deep not hurt?" I choked out, a hint of scolding in my voice.Hudson looked at me, then suddenly reached out with his uninjured hand and gently wrapped it around the fingers I was holding the gauze with.I froze for a moment, but I didn't pull away.Seeing that I didn't reject him, his grip slowly tightened, as if he was terrified I would vanish the next second."Act

After that day in the library, I didn't sleep well for three days.I replayed those two weeks in my head over and over. The two weeks I spent running across half the city, he spent waiting outside Clara's father's shop. Two parallel lines, neither saying a word to the other."So, do you believe him?" Mina asked, chewing on her straw."I believe what he said was the truth," I replied."Doesn't that mean you've forgiven him?""No." I closed my notebook. "Telling the truth and being worthy of trust are two different things. Where was I when he was hiding the truth? I was left to freeze in the cold wind for two hours."Mina paused, seeming to understand, and didn't ask further.I didn't go looking for him, either. He still saved my seat at eight o'clock and left coffee at nine. I still drank it.Drinking the coffee didn't mean anything. I was just very tired, and the coffee was hot.Thursday afternoon, Applied Wolf Psychology class. It was the hardest course in the healing department. The

For the next three weeks, Hudson became a shadow. At eight o'clock in the morning, in the third row by the window in the library, a book would be placed on the desk to reserve it. That was my usual spot.At nine o'clock, a hot coffee would appear at the corner of the desk, black. I always drank it black, and only two people in the whole world knew that.During afternoon lab sessions, he always stood in the very back row, watching me mix essential oils through the gaps between six other people. He didn't say a single word."That Alpha is here again," Mina nudged me with her elbow. "He stared at you for twenty straight minutes. I counted.""Let him.""Who is he, anyway?""Just an old neighbor from my hometown."Mina's eyes widened. "A neighbor? A neighbor wouldn't drop out of Blood Moon for you. I looked him up. He was ranked number one in this year's class."The dropper in my hand paused for half a second. "That's his choice."On Thursday of the third week, in the library.I got up to r

"A transfer student? Right in the middle of the semester?"The old lady at the Oakhaven administration office pushed the documents back across the counter.Hudson pushed them right back."My transcript is on the second page."She flipped it open, and her hand stopped."...Blood Moon's top freshman." She looked up. "Son, you're transferring from the top combat department in the country to our healing department? And you want to drop back a year?""Yes.""Do you have any idea what the healing department studies? Essential oil ratios, emotional counseling, wolf psychology pacification. There are no rankings, no honor rolls, and absolutely no Alphas willing to do it.""I am."The old lady stared at him for five seconds before bringing her stamp down hard on the paper."Sign here. You're in Dorm Building C. Don't regret this."Hudson picked up his black duffel bag and walked out of the administration building. Then, he stopped dead in his tracks. There was a trace of a familiar scent in the

That realization exploded in Hudson's head, echoing all night long.He sat on the floor of the hallway until dawn was almost breaking, finally jolting up as if woken by the freezing cold.He had to go find her.But another voice rang out in his mind: She doesn't want you anymore. What right do you have?Hudson gripped his phone until his knuckles turned white, staring obsessively at that gray "unread" status. In the end, he didn't send a single word. He just buried his face in his hands. At the exact same time, six hundred miles away, I stayed up all night calculating the money my father had transferred to me.Finally, I booked a full course in the academy's top-tier sensory deprivation tank, along with rare herbal essential oils flown in from South America.Thirty thousand dollars. Every last cent. This was the initial college fund my dad had given me, hoping it would help me when it mattered most.Well, I decided the time was now. I was going to rebuild myself into an Avery who belon
