Chapter 2

Author: Bagel
Late that night, I tossed and turned in bed. My mind was full of images of him standing with Clara.

Tonight was Clara's birthday party.

And Hudson's eighteenth birthday was tomorrow.

It wasn't just that hoodie with their mingled scents. Even their lives were intertwining in ways I couldn't ignore.

The next morning, favoring my injured foot, I slowly made my way to Hudson's house.

Hudson's dad, Mr. Reed, opened the door.

"Avery! Come on in."

Hudson called out from his bedroom upstairs, but he didn't come down.

"I really don't understand the academy's schedule," Mr. Reed complained while grabbing his car keys.

"The wilderness survival test is next week, and they still gave you all days off. That boy hasn't looked away from his screen since breakfast."

"Go upstairs and keep him company. I have to run to the butcher. Tell me what you want to eat for dinner."

After Mr. Reed drove off, I stopped outside Hudson's door and knocked gently.

He was wearing headphones, smiling brightly at his screen.

Catching sight of me in his peripheral vision, he casually waved a hand, gesturing for me to come in.

I sat on the edge of the bed behind him and caught a glimpse of Clara's face on the screen.

I couldn't hear what they were talking about, but there was a level of focus in Hudson's eyes that I had never seen before.

After a long while, he finally ended the call and remembered to look at me. "Your foot is swollen. Why did you walk all the way over here?"

I handed over the heavy box in my hands. "Happy birthday, Hudson."

"Thanks." He took it, didn't even glance at it, and casually shoved it into the furthest corner of his desk.

"Are you still going to Blood Moon?" he asked out of the blue.

"Yes." I froze for a moment, confused by the question. "What about you?"

"Yeah, obviously," he replied dismissively, smiling at his screen again.

I stood there for a moment, feeling like a complete outsider.

"I'll head back now, then."

He just gave a hum without even sparing me a glance, and put his headphones back on.

I walked to the doorway and was just about to head downstairs when the voices from inside the room stopped me in my tracks.

"Honestly, I don't even want to go to Blood Moon." Hudson's voice drifted through the crack in the door, sounding annoyed.

"The rules there are too rigid. I have been wanting to switch schools for a while."

"Then why don't you switch?" Clara's voice came from the screen.

"We'll see. It's just a hassle." He laughed it off casually.

My hand, halfway up my jacket zipper, suddenly froze.

So when he asked if I was going to Blood Moon, he never wanted us to go together at all.

He just wanted to know if I would be there so he could avoid me in advance.

The gift box was still sitting alone at the corner of the desk. That camera had taken me two weeks of searching across half the city to find, and he hadn't even touched the wrapping paper.

I walked downstairs just as Mr. Reed came back with groceries, bumping right into me at the door.

"Avery, leaving already? Stay and have some barbecue."

I forced a slight smile. "No thanks, Mr. Reed. I've got to go back and prepare for tomorrow's exam."

He didn't insist, but instead shouted upstairs, "Hudson! Get down here and walk Avery out!"

The sunlight outside made the whole street incredibly bright. But inside, I felt terribly empty.

Hudson stopped caring about our promise to go to Blood Moon together a long time ago. Since that was the case, there was no need for me to keep trapping myself in the past.

It wasn't like I had no other options in life.

The moment I walked out that door, I quietly let go of that promise.

The night before the wilderness survival exam, Hudson sent a text.

"I'll come pick you up tomorrow morning."

I stared at the screen for a long time, then slowly typed out my reply. "No need. I'll take the bus there."

He didn't reply again.

Early the next morning, I dragged my suitcase and got on the bus to the testing site all by myself.

This was the first time Hudson hadn't shown up by my side for something truly important.

The scenery outside the window flew backward. I leaned against the glass and, for the first time, felt that being alone wasn't so bad after all.

After arriving at the starting point of the exam, I checked my name on the equipment list and took a moment to organize my backpack.

Just as I turned around, someone crashed hard into me from behind.

Over the three months since I said those words, Hudson truly kept his promise. He never made me shed another tear. Not even for a single second. The wounds on his shoulder had long since healed, but the careful, tender way he treated me hadn't diminished in the slightest."Avery, it's my turn," Hudson's voice sounded close to my ear, carrying a hint of barely detectable nervousness.I looked up.It was Oakhaven University's Spring Ball. Crystal chandeliers cast a soft glow over the students twirling on the dance floor in their colorful evening gowns and suits.I was wearing a pale silver gown, the hem flowing like liquid moonlight.Hudson wore a sharply tailored dark suit, standing right by my side like a fierce protector who refused to leave my side for even a moment. For the past three months, he had escorted me to and from every class, accompanied me through every lab experiment, and whenever my mental barrier training pushed me to the brink of collapse, he was always there, using h

"Does it hurt?"I asked, my voice trembling slightly as I held a piece of gauze, carefully cleaning the three deep gashes on Hudson's shoulder. He sat on the bed in the infirmary, his shoulder bare. His muscles were pulled tight, yet he was unusually obedient, not letting out a single groan."No." He shook his head, though his eyes never left my face for a second. My fingers trembled slightly, and my eyes unknowingly grew red.Blood was still seeping from the wounds. With every swipe of the gauze, his muscles would flinch slightly, yet a faint, barely-there smile remained on his lips."Stop pretending. How can a wound this deep not hurt?" I choked out, a hint of scolding in my voice.Hudson looked at me, then suddenly reached out with his uninjured hand and gently wrapped it around the fingers I was holding the gauze with.I froze for a moment, but I didn't pull away.Seeing that I didn't reject him, his grip slowly tightened, as if he was terrified I would vanish the next second."Act

After that day in the library, I didn't sleep well for three days.I replayed those two weeks in my head over and over. The two weeks I spent running across half the city, he spent waiting outside Clara's father's shop. Two parallel lines, neither saying a word to the other."So, do you believe him?" Mina asked, chewing on her straw."I believe what he said was the truth," I replied."Doesn't that mean you've forgiven him?""No." I closed my notebook. "Telling the truth and being worthy of trust are two different things. Where was I when he was hiding the truth? I was left to freeze in the cold wind for two hours."Mina paused, seeming to understand, and didn't ask further.I didn't go looking for him, either. He still saved my seat at eight o'clock and left coffee at nine. I still drank it.Drinking the coffee didn't mean anything. I was just very tired, and the coffee was hot.Thursday afternoon, Applied Wolf Psychology class. It was the hardest course in the healing department. The

For the next three weeks, Hudson became a shadow. At eight o'clock in the morning, in the third row by the window in the library, a book would be placed on the desk to reserve it. That was my usual spot.At nine o'clock, a hot coffee would appear at the corner of the desk, black. I always drank it black, and only two people in the whole world knew that.During afternoon lab sessions, he always stood in the very back row, watching me mix essential oils through the gaps between six other people. He didn't say a single word."That Alpha is here again," Mina nudged me with her elbow. "He stared at you for twenty straight minutes. I counted.""Let him.""Who is he, anyway?""Just an old neighbor from my hometown."Mina's eyes widened. "A neighbor? A neighbor wouldn't drop out of Blood Moon for you. I looked him up. He was ranked number one in this year's class."The dropper in my hand paused for half a second. "That's his choice."On Thursday of the third week, in the library.I got up to r

"A transfer student? Right in the middle of the semester?"The old lady at the Oakhaven administration office pushed the documents back across the counter.Hudson pushed them right back."My transcript is on the second page."She flipped it open, and her hand stopped."...Blood Moon's top freshman." She looked up. "Son, you're transferring from the top combat department in the country to our healing department? And you want to drop back a year?""Yes.""Do you have any idea what the healing department studies? Essential oil ratios, emotional counseling, wolf psychology pacification. There are no rankings, no honor rolls, and absolutely no Alphas willing to do it.""I am."The old lady stared at him for five seconds before bringing her stamp down hard on the paper."Sign here. You're in Dorm Building C. Don't regret this."Hudson picked up his black duffel bag and walked out of the administration building. Then, he stopped dead in his tracks. There was a trace of a familiar scent in the

That realization exploded in Hudson's head, echoing all night long.He sat on the floor of the hallway until dawn was almost breaking, finally jolting up as if woken by the freezing cold.He had to go find her.But another voice rang out in his mind: She doesn't want you anymore. What right do you have?Hudson gripped his phone until his knuckles turned white, staring obsessively at that gray "unread" status. In the end, he didn't send a single word. He just buried his face in his hands. At the exact same time, six hundred miles away, I stayed up all night calculating the money my father had transferred to me.Finally, I booked a full course in the academy's top-tier sensory deprivation tank, along with rare herbal essential oils flown in from South America.Thirty thousand dollars. Every last cent. This was the initial college fund my dad had given me, hoping it would help me when it mattered most.Well, I decided the time was now. I was going to rebuild myself into an Avery who belon
