My fingers tightened around my phone.

"He hired a lawyer?"

Adrian's expression changed immediately.

"Yes." He looked as troubled as I felt.

"He's actually doing this?" I said, my disbelief plain.

Liam had spent years making me feel like I wasn't enough. Not thin enough. Not attractive enough. Not successful enough. But this was different. He wasn't just trying to hurt me anymore. He was trying to claim a place in my child's life before my baby had even taken a breath — after he'd told me to abort it.

"He's only doing this to serve his own purpose," I said.

Adrian reached for my phone. "Let me see."

I handed it to him. His eyes moved across the message. His jaw tightened.

"He's not getting near you."

"This isn't about getting near me." I swallowed. "It's about the baby."

Adrian looked at me. "Then we'll deal with it."

The certainty in his voice should have comforted me. Instead, it scared me. Because Liam wasn't the kind of man who backed down when he lost. He got worse, and he'd do anything to take back the throne.

The next morning proved it.

I had barely finished breakfast when the private elevator opened. A man in a charcoal suit stepped into the penthouse, carrying a leather briefcase. Adrian immediately stood.

"Who are you?"

The man stopped several feet away. "Daniel Mercer. I'm representing Mr. Liam Vance."

My stomach dropped. Adrian's face went cold.

"You weren't invited."

"I don't require an invitation to serve legal documents."

Daniel opened his briefcase. I stared at the papers in his hand. My hands suddenly felt cold.

"Chloe Bennet?"

I nodded. He walked toward me and held out the documents. "I have papers for you."

I didn't move. Adrian stepped between us. "You can hand them to me."

Daniel smiled politely. "I'm afraid they're addressed to Ms. Bennet."

Adrian's voice hardened. "Give them to me."

"Adrian." I touched his arm. He looked at me. I shook my head. "I'll take them."

He didn't look happy about it, but he stepped aside. I accepted the papers.

The first page was filled with legal language I barely understood. Then I saw Liam's name. My heart sank.

"What exactly is he asking for?"

Daniel adjusted his cuff. "My client is requesting a formal paternity test immediately after the child's birth."

I looked at him. "Immediately?"

"Yes."

"He isn't even born yet." And Liam had rejected the pregnancy outright.

"Which is precisely why the request establishes his intention to secure his parental rights from the beginning."

My throat tightened. "What parental rights?"

"Depending on the test results, my client intends to pursue legal recognition as the child's biological father and seek appropriate custody and visitation rights."

I stared at the papers. The words blurred. Custody. Visitation. Rights. My baby. I pressed a hand against my stomach.

"No."

Daniel raised an eyebrow. "No?"

"He doesn't get to decide that."

"Ms. Bennet, the court will decide."

"He abandoned me." My voice shook. "He cheated on me. He humiliated me. He told me to find the father of the baby or terminate the pregnancy. And now that I'm keeping it, suddenly he wants to be a father?"

Daniel's expression remained calm. "I understand this is emotional."

"You don't understand anything."

Adrian moved closer. "She doesn't owe your client cooperation beyond what the law requires."

Daniel glanced at him. "Mr. Vance, my client is aware of your relationship with Ms. Bennet."

My body went still. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything may become relevant."

Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Choose your next words carefully."

Daniel gave a small smile. "I always do."

He pulled another document from his briefcase. "This is notice that my client intends to establish paternity immediately following the child's birth."

I looked at the page. There was Liam's name again. For a moment, I imagined him holding my baby. The thought made my stomach twist.

"I won't let him use my child to control me."

Adrian looked at me. "You won't have to face him alone."

I met his eyes. There was something different in his expression — not anger alone, but determination. He wasn't going to let Liam frighten me. And somehow, that gave me enough courage to look back at the lawyer.

"Tell Liam he can file whatever he wants." Daniel studied me. "But I won't surrender my child to him."

His lips curved slightly. "I'll pass along your position."

He closed his briefcase. I thought that was the end. Then he paused. "There is one more matter."

Adrian's entire posture stiffened. "What?"

Daniel looked directly at me. "My client has concerns regarding Ms. Bennet's circumstances."

I frowned. "What circumstances?"

He gave me a thin smile. "His concerns aren't merely about paternity."

My heart began pounding. "What are you talking about?"

Daniel picked up the final document. "There's also the matter of your fitness as a mother."

The room went silent. I stared at him. "My fitness?"

He nodded. "My client has instructed me to raise several character concerns about Ms. Bennet."

My blood ran cold. "What character concerns?"

The lawyer's smile deepened. "My client has evidence."

Adrian stepped forward. "Get out."

Daniel didn't move. Instead, he looked at me one last time and said quietly, "My client also has... character concerns about Ms. Bennet's fitness."

My hand instinctively moved to my stomach. For the first time since learning I was pregnant, I wasn't afraid of what Liam could do to me. I was afraid of what he might try to take from me.

---

By morning, everyone knew a new version of my story. I found out when Maya called me.

"Chloe, don't go online."

I sat up in bed. "Why?"

"Because you're going to see something you won't like."

My stomach tightened. "What happened?"

There was a pause. "Liam is talking."

I closed my eyes. Of course he was. "What is he saying?"

"That you trapped him."

My eyes opened. "With what?"

"The pregnancy."

For a second, I couldn't speak. Then I laughed — not because it was funny, but because I genuinely couldn't believe someone could lie so easily.

"He's telling people I made up my pregnancy?"

"Worse." Maya's voice dropped. "He's saying you've been trying to trap him for years."

My chest tightened. "For years?"

"Apparently, according to Liam, you became obsessed with marrying him and having his child. He claims you kept press—"

I almost turned around before I knocked. Grace's house looked exactly the way I remembered it—small, quiet, and tucked behind a row of old trees. Nothing about it had changed, yet standing there with Meridian Holdings still hanging over my head made everything feel different. I raised my hand and knocked. Once. Twice. For several seconds, there was no answer. Then I heard the lock turn. The door opened only a few inches. Grace looked through the gap, and the moment she saw me, her expression changed. "Chloe?" "Hi, Aunt Grace."She stared at me as though she hadn't expected to see me standing there. Then her eyes dropped briefly to my stomach. Her face softened. "You should have called." "I did." "I mean before coming." "I know." She hesitated before opening the door wider. "Come in."I stepped inside. The familiar smell of cinnamon and old books greeted me. Grace had always kept the place warm and comfortable, the kind of home where nothing seemed urgent. Today, even the silence felt

By the next morning, Meridian Holdings had become the first thing I thought about when I opened my eyes. It was also the last thing I wanted to think about.I sat at the kitchen island with my laptop open while Adrian stood across from me, speaking quietly with his investigator on the phone. I watched his expression change — first impatient, then confused, and finally something close to concern settled over his face. He ended the call."Well?" I asked. He didn't answer immediately, and that alone made my stomach tighten. "What did he find?""Nothing," he said. I stared at him. "Nothing?" "Almost nothing." Adrian pulled out the chair beside me and sat down. "My investigator spent the entire night tracing Meridian Holdings. Registration records, bank filings, corporate databases, property records — everything.""And?""Meridian exists," he said. I waited. "But there's no one behind it." A cold shiver moved through me. "What does that mean?" "It means the company is registered. It has a

I stared at the screen for so long that Maya finally leaned over my shoulder. "What is it?"I didn't answer. I was looking at Liam's bank records. More specifically, I was looking at a transfer dated nearly five months before I had ever suspected he was cheating on me. The amount wasn't enormous by Vance standards, but it was far too large to ignore.$75,000."That's Liam's account?" Maya asked."Yes." My stomach tightened. The transfer had been made directly into Liam's personal account. The sender wasn't a person. It was a company I'd never heard of.MERIDIAN HOLDINGS."What the hell is Meridian Holdings?" Maya whispered."I don't know."I scrolled back through the records. There was another transfer. Smaller. Then another. Three payments in total, all from the same company, all before Liam started sleeping with Zoe.I swallowed hard. "This doesn't make sense."Maya pulled a chair closer. "Maybe it's a business payment.""Liam wasn't running a business.""Then an investment?""He di

I couldn't stop staring at the screen. Liam's face was frozen in the security footage from across town. The timestamp was clear: 3:18 a.m. — seven minutes after his badge had supposedly opened the door to my floor. I looked at Marcus. "So you're telling me Liam was here at 3:12 and somewhere else at 3:18?" "I'm telling you the access system says he was here," Marcus replied. "The camera says otherwise." Maya folded her arms. "Could he have left the building and gotten across town in seven minutes?" Marcus shook his head. "The locations are too far apart." I let out a slow breath. Then what had happened? Someone had destroyed the photographs on my desk. Someone had used Liam's badge to get onto my floor. And Liam had apparently been somewhere else. My mind kept circling the same question. Was Liam being protected? Or was someone setting him up? I looked at Maya. "Call Adrian." She reached for her phone. "I already did." I blinked. "When?" "While you were looking at the foota

I almost turned around when I saw my desk. For a second, I couldn't understand what I was looking at. Then I stopped walking. The photographs were everywhere. Pictures of me from company events, campaign meetings, birthdays, even a few private photographs I'd kept tucked inside the frame beside my computer — they had all been ripped from their frames and scattered across my desk. Some were torn in half. Others had been scribbled over with black ink. My face had been crossed out again and again. My stomach tightened. Someone had taken the time to do this. Not accidentally. Not in anger that lasted five seconds. They had stood at my desk and deliberately destroyed pieces of my life. I looked around the marketing floor. People had noticed. A few employees quickly looked away when they caught my eye. I hated that. I hated being looked at like I was something fragile. After everything that had happened, I had promised myself I wasn't going to hide anymore. I walked toward my desk. M

I couldn't stop thinking about Zoe.Maya had promised to call me as soon as she knew more, but hours had passed. Nothing.I sat at the kitchen island in Adrian's penthouse, staring at my untouched tea. Liam was attacking me from every direction. First, the photograph. Then the paternity claim. Now the rumors about my pregnancy. And somewhere in the middle of all of it was Zoe — a girl who looked terrified enough to believe Liam could destroy her.I heard footsteps behind me. I turned. Adrian walked into the kitchen. His expression was unreadable."Where are you going?"He picked up his coat from the back of a chair. "To see Liam."My stomach tightened. "Why?""He needs to hear something from me.""Adrian, don't."He looked at me. "I'll handle it.""That is exactly what worries me."A faint smile touched his mouth. "You think I'm going to hurt him?""I think you're angry.""I am.""At him?""At everything." He walked closer. "Especially at the fact that you keep getting dragged into pr
