Chapter 2

Author: Soda
That choked demand kept me awake all night.

His care always came with teeth. It was full of blame and heavy pressure. Over time, I even felt guilty for getting hurt around him.

By dawn, the financial feeds and social channels were flooded with headlines. The Sterling and Silverthorne packs had finalized their cross-border merger. In the photos, Tessa Sterling stood beside the boardroom table with champagne in hand, the golden girl of the new generation.

The entire city celebrated the corporate win. No one remembered that today was Gavin's real ceremony. He was turning twenty-two, taking the full Alpha mantle.

For a pureblood, twenty-two was the turning point. The beast inside reached full power. Senses exploded, and the rut was deadly volatile.

I swallowed two painkillers, put on my sunglasses, and headed to his penthouse.

The scanner cleared my print. The door opened, and a wall of pure Alpha dominance slammed into me. Raw cedar, thick with unbridled aggression, choked the air.

Several high-ranking council members were nervously gathering the multinational agreements scattered across the long table.

Gavin stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass. His broad back was rigid, sharp as a drawn blade. He ripped open the top two buttons of his shirt. Gold still flickered in his dark eyes. He was barely holding his inner wolf down.

"Tell the board I won't budge on the Seattle port voting rights," he rasped, every word heavy with command.

I stood frozen in the foyer, holding the box tied with silver ribbon.

I spent an entire year of intern stipends on it. I sketched the design myself, hired a master tailor, and had it sewn from raw silk and cashmere. In the charcoal weave, I hand-stitched the Silverthorne wolf crest with fine silver thread, sealing my own scent into the fabric.

Between fated mates, a tie was a leash. Gifting one meant giving your mate full control.

I hoped he could spare me just sixty seconds today.

Gavin turned. The gold in his eyes vanished the second he saw me, returning to pitch black. His brow furrowed hard as he crossed the room. "The sun is blinding today. Who let you come out alone? Did you dress the scrape on your knee?"

He barked the questions while hitting the wall console. Heavy blackout curtains rolled shut, killing the harsh glare outside. My throbbing temples finally relaxed.

"I'm fine," I said quietly, holding out the box. "Happy birthday, Gavin."

"Thanks." A rare softness flickered in his eyes. He took the box, and his heavy palm dropped onto my head. His skin was burning hot, running high with unspent fever.

His fingers barely brushed my hair before the encrypted phone on the table buzzed violently.

His Beta stepped up, voice low. "Alpha, the Sterling transport is waiting downstairs. Tessa says the New York regulators arrived early. You have to chair the closed-door signing this afternoon."

Gavin pulled in a sharp breath. He dropped my gift onto the console by the door and grabbed his suit jacket from the chair.

"Get the car ready," he ordered.

An aide rushed past to grab a briefcase. He tossed a stack of folders onto the console, burying the silver box under heavy industry reports, shoving it deep into the corner.

I stood motionless. Looking at these ruthless predators running a financial empire, my heart sank into my stomach.

His world was capital, dominance, and endless expansion.

I could not even handle a stray drop of his raw aura.

I stepped back, ready to slip out.

"Nadia." Gavin's voice stopped me.

He stood in the hallway shadows, adjusting his cufflinks. His gaze pinned me down. "Did you sign the transfer for the headquarters risk team?"

It was our unwritten promise. He ruled the empire, and I guarded his flank, managing the risk.

I kept my back to him and nodded. "I signed it."

He stayed quiet for two beats. "Good. When the New York reps leave tonight, I'll take you back to the ancestral estate."

I pulled open the heavy steel door.

Right before the latch clicked shut, my ruined, hyper-sensitive ears caught the voices inside.

His Beta sounded worried. "Alpha, if Nadia moves to the executive floor next week, the air filtration system needs a full overhaul. Your fresh awakening makes your scent too violent. You'll scorch her nervous system."

"Shelve the transfer for now," Gavin cut in.

His voice carried a bone-deep exhaustion.

"If we share an office every day, I have to suppress my wolf around the clock. It's exhausting. Let it sit until I get through this rut."

It's exhausting.

The words slid through the door like ice down my spine.

All that restraint, all that keeping his distance, was never gentleness.

It was a cage.

I walked into the street. The noon heat hit me like a slap, stinging my dry eyes.

If my existence was his prison, I would break the lock myself.

The next morning, at the Seattle Corporate Risk Assessment Center.

My screen lit up with a text from Gavin:

[Car is downstairs. Scent profiles are chaotic at the testing floor. Wait for me. I'll take you through the private bypass.]

[Just show up and get your clearance. Don't stress about the corporate seat. I'll handle it.]

I stared at the words, at the routine shelter he offered. My thumb hovered, and for the first time, I hit delete.

I did not reply. I pulled my cap down and walked straight into the crowd alone.

The massive holographic board in the lobby cycled through testing assignments.

I stopped at the verification gate, swiped my credential through the scanner, and turned toward the hall.

A harsh sneer cut through the air, and a heavy shoulder slammed hard into mine.

It was late when the gala wrapped up. A light drizzle soaked the Seattle streets."I'll pull the car around from the underground garage. Don't stand in the wind. Give me two minutes." Gavin blocked the cold draft with his shoulder, his voice gentle and careful.I nodded, waiting under the warm glow of the hotel entrance lamps. Before his black car could emerge, a low, vicious engine roar tore through the drizzle.A silver-gray Aston Martin braked with a sharp screech, sliding to a smooth stop right against the curb by my feet. The tinted window rolled down, revealing Tessa's sharp, striking face. She rested one hand on the steering wheel, a faint smirk playing on her lips."Need a ride, Director Vance?""I'm fine, Miss Sterling."I stayed on the curb, my voice calm. "My ride is almost here."Tessa raised an eyebrow, pushed the door open, and stepped out.The fine rain caught on her black coat. Her blonde waves stirred in the night air, bold and commanding as always."I still need to se

"I understand everything now, Gavin."I looked away and pushed the box with the tie gently back toward him.Gavin snapped his head up. Wild relief and desperate hope flared in his eyes. "Nadia, does that mean we—""That doesn't mean we're getting back together."The words were flat and calm. They froze the air in the booth instantly.Gavin went rigid. The light died from his face, leaving only an ashen pale."Why... Didn't we clear everything up? You know I love you. You know I only did it to keep you safe...""Because the damage was real, Gavin."I cut him off, my voice steady, without a trace of spite. "During those years in the dark, I spent countless nights hating myself for being broken. Every time you shoved me away, every cruel word you threw in my face in public, it branded into my bones. Knowing you had no choice doesn't make the scars vanish."I stood up, picking up my trench coat and handbag."You protected me, but you broke me, too. I need time. I can't just act like nothin

"Let go."I looked down at the white-knuckled grip on my wrist, my voice ice cold. "Mr. Silverthorne, do I need to call cruise security?"Gavin flinched as if burned by white-hot steel. He had no choice but to loosen his fingers, inch by inch. The look in his eyes threatened to drown him whole."I won't force you..." His throat moved with difficulty. "Just don't vanish from my world again. Please."I gave him no second glance, turning on my heel and stepping through the weather door.Early the next morning, the cruiser docked.I skipped the farewell reception entirely and took the earliest non-stop flight back to Manhattan. The frantic pace of the high-rises slowly pushed the bitter memories aside. On my third afternoon back at hedge fund headquarters, the front desk buzzed my private line directly."Partner Vance, there is a gentleman from Seattle in the private cafe downstairs." My assistant's tone was cautious. "He said if you don't go down, he will wait right there until this entir

Three years later, early winter in Alaskan waters was freezing. The massive commercial cruiser cut through the drift ice."Partner Vance, the fleet from Seattle's Silverthorne syndicate has entered the main channel. The hosts need you on the top deck to sign off on the risk assessment."My assistant's voice came through my earpiece.I closed my tablet and straightened my tailored suit jacket.Three years on Wall Street had stripped away every trace of weakness.I was now the youngest risk management partner at a premier Manhattan hedge fund.Adaptive noise-canceling chips were implanted in my ears. Combined with long-acting scent blockers developed in Manhattan, low-frequency vibrations and feral Alpha auras could no longer touch me.I pushed open the heavy weather door to the observation deck. A tall, familiar figure stood right in front of me.Three years had passed. Gavin looked fully in command of his empire now. He was sharp in black, his jawline more severe than before, radiating

"Why the hell is she in New York? Who cleared her to leave?!"Gavin grabbed his Beta by the collar. Dark gold flared in his eyes. The Beta turned pale as death and dropped his gaze. "Her transfer... the system automatically canceled it this morning. Nadia booked an expedited route. We couldn't intercept her!""Then scramble the private jets and intercept her! Lock down every ground terminal in Manhattan!"Gavin spat out the order, grabbed his keys, and bolted out the door.Inside his chest, his inner wolf snarled and battered against his ribs. The bond was violently severing from her side, sending blinding agony straight down his spine. He tore through the streets, speeding all the way to the Vance estate. The front door swung open. Nadia's mother, Mrs. Vance, stood on the threshold."Gavin?" Seeing his bloodshot eyes and cold sweat, Mrs. Vance looked surprised. "What are you doing here? Isn't today the corporate signing at headquarters?""Where is Nadia?" Gavin forced down his ragged

The laughter on the deck died instantly.Dozens of eyes locked onto me, heavy with judgment and cheap amusement. My knuckles turned white around my glass. My heart hammered in my throat.Gavin stood dead center in the ballroom, an amber scotch in hand. His eyes flicked across the floor, barely brushing my pale face.He stayed silent for three long seconds."Cut the crap," he said. His voice was dead, cold as the sea wind. It cut clean across the deck. "Our families have ties. The elders told me to watch out for her. That's all it is."A burst of ugly laughter erupted around him."Told you! No way a pureblood Alpha gets shackled to a defective runt!""Family favor. We get it, man!"I swallowed back the metallic taste in my throat, put down my glass, lowered my head, and hurried through the drinking crowd, fleeing the harsh lights.I needed air. I had to get away from the wolves trampling my pride into the deck floor. The second-level balcony had no lights. The ocean wind slapped my face
