The Buyer Who Knew Too Much
Author: Reese Kim

Chapter 1

Author: Reese Kim
My hands froze over the keyboard.

It was just a secondhand marketplace. The message on the screen was from the buyer. He had already paid, and I had already shipped the item. The deal was done.

What I sold was my girlfriend's DSLR camera.

However, it seemed like what he wanted… was not just the camera.

Messages kept popping up.

"Hey, Chloe Hastings, what's wrong? Mad at me?"

"Don't tell me you're getting too into the roleplay again. This cold attitude suits you. Still not replying?"

"I picked the first outfit. Same pose as before. How much? Name your price."

"If you don't reply, I'll just go with the usual–five hundred."

A few more photos came through.

Suggestive poses. Flirtatious expressions. It was exaggerated, but still familiar.

My girlfriend–the one I lived with.

The name matched. The face matched.

My blood ran hot.

I'm just a delivery driver. Nothing special.

The one thing I have ever been proud of… is having a beautiful girlfriend.

We went to the same high school. She was the kind everyone noticed–pretty, soft-spoken, with a great figure.

It took me three years to stop being the backup and become her actual boyfriend.

She spent a lot–food, shopping, makeup, designer bags. And then there was photography.

So I worked. From morning until night.

Bad weather, holidays–it did not matter. I took every order I could.

I made enough to get by. Barely enough to support both of us.

Lately, work had slowed. Money was tight.

That's why she gave me her DSLR, said it was outdated, told me to sell it for extra cash.

When I held that camera, I actually felt lucky. I thought I had a girlfriend who cared.

I did not expect this.

I had been cheated on.

The anger rose fast. I decided to play along, lure the guy out… and deal with him.

So I sent back a simple 'OK.'

The reply came instantly.

"Tomorrow night, 10 p.m. Triumph Hotel, Room 701."

That time…

Just yesterday, I told her about a new food street nearby. Discounts started at ten. Business would be good.

They picked that exact time.

If I had not seen the messages… I would have been out working, completely unaware.

I shut the laptop. My stomach turned.

Footsteps came from the door. She was back.

She leaned into me, soft and sweet.

"Jake Reynolds, do you like my new nails?"

Her voice was sweet enough to melt anything. Normally, I would not have been able to resist pulling her into the bedroom.

However, now, looking at her manicure, my anger only grew.

I was out there working myself to the bone–supporting everything, paying for everything, including all her expensive habits.

Photography alone burned through money. That DSLR had cost a fortune.

And she was cheating on me. Using that same camera to take those kinds of photos.

I could not hold it in anymore.

I shoved her away. She fell to the floor.

"Say it. Who's the guy waiting for you at Triumph Hotel?"

She froze. Then, unbelievably, she got angry.

"Jake, are you crazy? What Triumph Hotel? I've never even heard of it!"

Some people don't admit anything until they're cornered.

I opened the laptop, logged into her account, pulled up the latest transaction, and dragged her over.

"The guy is already setting it up. Look at it yourself."

I expected tears. Apologies.

Instead, she slammed her hands on the table, her voice sharp.

"Jake, I think you've been getting too comfortable. Your brain's not working. What are you even talking about?"

I looked closer.

My heart dropped.

All those messages… All those photos…

Gone.

Completely wiped.

Three people. Three different expressions.Shane looked the worst. The arrogance he had shown earlier was completely gone. He forced out an awkward smile and started begging."Jake, come on. We're all men here. We were just out looking for some fun. Why make things this ugly?"He leaned closer and pointed at Renee."I can tell you're interested in her too. She's a good one. You can have her."Renee was still his girlfriend in name, yet he pushed her out like she meant nothing. This man was disgusting.I was about to speak when a flash of light crossed my vision.A cold blade pressed against my neck.Backed into a corner, Shane had actually pulled a fruit knife on me.He gritted his teeth."If you won't let me live, then we'll all die together!""You die first. Then I'll kill these two women one by one and send them after you!"Now I believed what Chloe had said. Shane was this afraid of the police because he must have committed something serious. With my life on the line,

She was right. I did have money saved. However, that money was meant as a bride price for her family. After all these years together, I had planned to make things official this year–to marry her. Now, looking at someone who had been plotting against me all along… there was no need anymore.Chloe's face went pale after hearing this."Jake… you were really going to marry me?"I smiled and nodded, then shook my head."Plans change. I can't marry you now. Chloe, they set me up. If they call the police, I'm the one going to prison."Before I even finished speaking, she immediately switched sides."The police?""Sir, ma'am, I think this is all a misunderstanding. My boyfriend is an honest man–he would never do something like that…"Shane frowned."Wait, what are you talking about? Weren't you the one who came to us? You said we should use my girlfriend as bait, squeeze Jake for money so you could get out clean–"Chloe lunged at him."Bullsh*t! I have no idea what you're talking

Chloe hesitated."You didn't take your clothes off because you didn't have the chance yet. But you were in bed with her–what is there to explain?"The man rushed forward and slapped Renee across the face."You b*tch. Cheating on me behind my back?"Renee covered her face and burst into tears, nothing like how she'd been acting just moments ago.I stepped in front of her and patted her shoulder."Just tell the truth. Don't let her twist things."Renee's attitude changed instantly. She glanced at me, then quickly got up and hid behind the man, pointing at me as she shouted–"Honey, I didn't mean to! He forced me!"What?I stared at her, unable to believe what I was hearing.Chloe clapped her hands."Wow. Even worse than I thought. Jake–you tried to rape her. That's a crime."She pulled out her phone, ready to call the police. The man stopped her."He's still your boyfriend. If you call the police, this will only get out of hand."Chloe snapped back, "Mr. Kessler, why are

Everything was set. I originally planned to report it to the police first.Renee stopped me."Wait until the evidence is solid. Then we go to the police."I held back. I booked a room at a small motel nearby and stayed inside, watching the surveillance feed without stepping out.Renee insisted on staying with me."I want to see it too. I want to see how that jerk betrayed me."That did not sit right with me.Renee seemed to know everything about her boyfriend already. If that was the case, why wait until now instead of confronting him? And as for watching it happen… there was not much to see beyond the obvious. However, we were on the same side now. She wanted to stay, and I did not push back. The footage was clear, streaming directly onto the laptop. Chloe was in the bedroom, wearing pajamas, scrolling through her phone. At first, I was focused. But gradually, my attention started to drift.Renee was sitting too close–barely a few inches away. She leaned against me as if sh

Fine. 'More exciting,' huh.I was out there working myself to the bone–supporting her hobbies, buying her an expensive camera. She used that camera to take those kinds of photos for other men. Now she was even planning to bring one of them into our home. The anger surged. I almost stormed into the bedroom to drag the truth out of her. However, I forced myself to stay calm. She was smart. Last time, she must have realized the camera still had those photos on it and got the buyer to delete the account before I could dig deeper. The number that sent those messages just now was not saved. No name, no history. Everything before those few texts had been wiped clean. If I confronted her now, she would deny it to the end.Chat records alone were not enough. We had lived together for five years. She had spent more than I could count–at least tens of thousands. This time, I needed to catch her in the act. Make her and that man pay it all back. I steadied myself. When I looked up, she

I was still trying to make sense of everything when my phone suddenly rang, making me jump.It was Chloe. Her voice was soft as ever."Jake, you worked all night, right? You must be exhausted. I made your favorite soup. I'm almost at your dispatch hub–come pick me up."That snapped me fully awake. She was heading straight to the dispatch hub–where I was supposed to have been working last night. If she asked any of my coworkers, she would find out immediately that I had not shown up. And she would lose it.I rushed back to the hub, slipped one of the guys some cash to cover for me, then hurried out to meet her.Just made it in time. She held up the soup, smiling."Jake, you've worked so hard! Look at those dark circles–must've been a busy night, huh?"One lie leads to another.I had no choice but to agree. Said I made a lot.She held out her hand.I clenched my jaw and transferred her another few hundred–money I did not even have.So in the end, I caught nothing… and only
