Callie's POV

"Where does your clinic's money come from?"

Michael was standing at his kitchen counter with a stethoscope still around his neck. He had just come off a double shift. He looked up at me, and I saw him understand that this was not a small question.

"Who told you to ask me that?"

"Vanessa. In handcuffs." My voice was steady, and I hated how steady it was. "She said her employer paid more than one person. She said to ask you."

He set the stethoscope down very slowly.

"Sit down, Callie

Callie's POV"Do not stop. Do not stop. Do not stop."Michael said it to himself between compressions, his arms locked, sweat running down his temple. I knelt on the other side of my father's body with his cold hand in mine and watched Michael's palms push down again and again on his chest."Callie, talk to him.""Papa. Papa, please.""Louder.""Papa, stay with me!"Two minutes. Three. Michael's breath came in ragged pulls. He did not slow down. Then my father's chest jerked. A wet, rattling gasp tore out of him."Pulse," Michael said hoarsely, two fingers pressed to his neck. "I have a pulse. Weak. But it is there."The paramedics ran in a minute later. They took over without a word, and Michael sat back on his heels with his hands shaking against his knees.I stared at him.Twelve missed calls in the dark. A fever that would have stopped a little heart. Now this.He had saved someone I loved again. He had not been asked."Go with him," Michael said. "I will follow."I did not thank

Callie's POV"What did you promise him, Papa?"I did not take off my coat. I did not sit down. I stood in the doorway of his study with the wire still taped under my shirt and my uncle's voice still in my ears.My father looked up from the desk. He saw my face and slowly put down his pen."He told you something.""He told me to ask."Papa closed his eyes."Sit, Callie.""Tell me.""Please."I sat.The lamp threw a small circle of yellow light across the desk. Outside, Lily was laughing at something on the television, and the sound seemed to come from another world."The night I sent you away," he said. "Raymond did not only threaten the family.""You told me he did.""He did. But he also offered a way out." His voice was very low. "He said he would let all of you live if I gave him two things. The chairmanship. And you.""Me?""Your absence." He opened his eyes. "I had to send you away myself. I had to swear that I would never contact you again. Never look for you, never write, never

Callie's POV"Tomorrow. Noon. Somewhere with people."I said it into the phone before I could talk myself out of it."Of course," my uncle said warmly. "You always were sensible. Choose the place, Calista. I will come alone.""Do not call me that.""It is your name.""It was." I gripped the phone. "Noon."He hung up first.---Papa did not argue. He sat in his study with the lamp on, listening to me tell it, his face going older with every sentence. When I finished, he rubbed his hand across his mouth."Where?""The glass café on Fifth. The one with the big windows.""Good. Open. Many exits." He looked at me. "My men will be inside and outside. You will wear a wire. You will not eat or drink anything he touches.""He is my uncle.""He is the man who erased your mother's grave."I did not answer that."Papa. Will you come?""No." His jaw tightened. "If he sees me, he will not say a true word. And if I see him, I may do something that costs you the hearing."I nodded.I did not tell him

Callie's POV"It is not what it looks like."Michael stood in his bedroom doorway with his keys still in his hand. His eyes went to the drawer. Then to the letter in my fingers."Do not say that to me," I said. "Not that sentence.""Then let me say a different one." He did not move closer. "Raymond sent that to trap you. He wanted you to find it.""It has your name on it.""It has my name on it because he wrote it to me. That is the whole point." He set his keys down on the dresser, slowly, like a man trying not to frighten an animal. "Five weeks ago, a courier left it at my clinic. I read it standing at the front desk. I called my lawyer before I finished the page.""And you kept it.""My lawyer told me to. It is evidence.""In a drawer. With your phone chargers.""In a drawer I knew you would never open." His mouth twisted. "Which tells you how well I planned that."I almost laughed. It died in my throat. He went to the bottom shelf of the wardrobe, took out a gray folder, and held

"She said her employer paid more than one person. She said to ask you."He set the stethoscope down very slowly."Sit down, Callie.""I will stand.""Then I will tell you standing." He drew a breath. "My research clinic has been funded for six years by a private trust. Anonymous. No name, no face. Just a lawyer who sent money every quarter and asked for nothing.""And you never asked who?""I asked once. They said the donor wished to stay private." He rubbed his eyes. "For a doctor trying to keep a children's leukemia program alive, that is not a strange gift. It is a miracle.""Whose trust is it?"His eyes met mine."I fo

Callie's POV"Mr. Ashford's counsel has withdrawn the petition."The judge said it without looking up from her papers.I sat at the table with Lily's small hand tucked in mine. She had insisted on coming. She wore her yellow dress and held Mr. Rabbit on her lap, and she was swinging her feet just above the floor."The footage obtained at the airfield has been entered into the record," the judge went on. "The child's statement. The statement of the minor, Noah. The pharmacy records." She finally lifted her eyes. "This court sees no reason to delay."Across the aisle, Harold Whitman did not meet my gaze. Derek's chair was empty."Temporary full custody of Lily Grace Dawson is granted to her mother," the judge said. "Effective immediately. Criminal inquiries into the conduct of Ms. Vanessa Cole, concerning child endangerment, will proceed separately."The gavel came down.Lily looked up at me."Did we win, Mummy?""We did, baby."She thought about it very seriously."Can Mr. Rabbit have
