"Vivienne *

I stared at the leather-bound contract on the glass desk, the words Clause 14: Marital Alliance burning into my retina.

"You're insane," I breathed, the words slipping out before I could stop them. "You want me to marry you? For a corporate merger? This isn't the nineteenth century, Julian."

"No. It’s the twenty-first century, where a PR crisis can erase three billion dollars in market cap overnight," Julian replied smoothly. He didn't blink. He didn't look angry. He just looked like a man calculating a spreadsheet.

He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a sleek, obsidian fountain pen, and slid it across the glass until it tapped against the folder. "Your father wants to use our weekend to prove I lack executive judgment, thereby forcing the board to restructure the acquisition in his favor. If we are married, the narrative changes entirely. It wasn't a reckless fling with a subordinate design director. It was a private, long-standing relationship culminating in a merger of two powerhouse families. The press will swallow it whole."

"And what do I get?" I asked, my voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of anger and adrenaline. "Aside from a golden cage?

"

Julian stood up, walking slowly around the perimeter of the desk until he was standing close enough for me to feel the heat radiating off him. "You get absolute control over the international division. You get the budget to build your empire. And most importantly, Vivienne... you get to watch me destroy the men who tried to phase you out."

He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his voice dropping to a seductive, lethal whisper. "Every asset has a price. I’m offering you everything you’ve ever fought for. All you have to do is sign."

I looked at the pen, then up into his piercing slate-gray eyes. My pride screamed at me to walk out. But my ambition—and the bitter taste of my family's betrayal—held me frozen.

"I need until tomorrow," I said, my voice finally finding its steel.

Julian pulled back, a slow, knowing smirk touching his lips. "You have until tonight, Vivienne. Don't be late to your father's gala."

Three hours later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and suffocating hypocrisy.

I wore a floor-length, backless silk gown the color of midnight. My hair was swept up, my makeup a flawless shield. I had spent the drive over analyzing every angle of Julian's proposal. It was a trap, beautifully wrapped in power and revenge.

"Vivienne, you actually made it," my stepmother, Victoria, said, cutting through the crowd. She swept toward me, a patronizing smile plastered on her face, my father trailing just a step behind her.

Arthur Sterling looked at me with a cold, assessing eye, like a businessman looking at a failing stock. "I'm glad you found the time, Vivienne. Though I suppose your schedule is quite clear now that the board has decided to move in a... different direction with your department."

The cruelty in his voice didn't even surprise me anymore.

"My department is doing just fine, Father," I said, raising my chin. "In fact, the merger might take things in a direction you didn't anticipate."

My father let out a low, mocking chuckle. "Don't be naive. I built leverage in this city. Vance Global might have the capital, but they need my political clearance for the expansion. If I decide to make a mess for young Julian Vance, the board will capitulate to my terms. You're a casualty of war, Arthur. Accept it."

"Is that so, Arthur?"

The deep, commanding baritone cut through the ambient noise of the ballroom like thunder.

The crowd seemed to part seamlessly as Julian Vance stepped into our circle. He was a vision of lethal elegance in a classic black tuxedo, his shoulders broad, his pre immediate commanding the attention of everyone in the room.

My father’s expression instantly shifted from arrogant to sycophantic. "Julian! Excellent to see you. I was just telling my daughter about the complexities of our upcoming merger—"

"The merger is finalized," Julian interrupted smoothly, his voice quiet but carrying an undeniable weight. He didn't look at my father. His slate-gray eyes were locked entirely on me, a dark, wicked spark dancing in their depths.

Before I could process his movement, Julian stepped directly beside me. His large, warm hand slid firmly around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest in a possessive, unyielding grip.

A collective gasp rippled through the nearby guests. My father froze, his jaw literally dropping as he stared at Julian’s hand on my hip.

"Julian... what is the meaning of this?" my father stammered, his face turning a mottled shade of red. "Vivienne is an employee"

"Vivienne is the future of Vance Global," Julian corrected, his grip tightening just enough to send a thrilling, terrifying shiver down my spine. He raised his champagne glass to the room, his voice echoing clearly across the ballroom. "And since the city's finest are all gathered here tonight, it feels like the perfect moment to make an announcement."

Julian turned his head slightly, his lips brushing against my ear as he spoke to the crowd, delivering a twist I never saw coming.

"Arthur, thank you for gathering everyone to celebrate our upcoming nuptials. Vivienne and I are getting married next week.”

"The thermal scan shows two cars parked under the collapsed metal roof."Dominic didn't say a word. His dark eyes stayed fixed on the narrow dirt lane ahead. The lethal, terrifying look on his hard jawline was back, but whenever he glanced sideways at me, his eyes held a deep, fierce heat that made my heart hammer in my chest."When we hit the mill, you stay on my left hip, Vivienne," Dominic rasped, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "Harris wants a trade. He isn't getting one.""I'm not leaving your side, Dominic,"

"Don't move a muscle, Vivienne."In the kitchen, the soft rustle of Martha’s coat sounded in the dark. A quiet metallic *clack* signaled her shotgun slide moving into place. From the hallway, Marcus slid down against the wooden baseboard, his rifle ready. No one spoke. "Not after Seattle.""Mercer is in federal hands," I reminded him, leaning my head against his broad shoulder. "Director Vance cleared the final ledger.
