“Please come in,”

Alex raised his head as he heard footsteps. His eyes narrowed as he saw Dennis, his assistant flanked by a couple of women he didn't recognize making their way into his home.

The sight of them made his skin crawl even though he had been the one who invited them.

He hated having strangers in his home but since his father had fired him and banned him from showing up at the company, this was the only place he could use.

“Sir, these are the women who applied for the job,” Dennis explained as he stepped to the side.

Alex nodded reluctantly and motioned to the long sofa in front of him. “I'll see them one after the other.”

Dennis selected one of the women to go first and then led the rest away.

As he stood to the side, his mind drifted off to his mother who was lying in the hospital bed.

He had barely slept all through the night mainly because he had wanted to be alert in case she woke up and needed something.

Being here with Alex and the women was the last thing he wanted to do but he didn't have a choice.

He was aware of the conflict between Alex and his father Lyon.

While he disagreed with Lyon's approach to things, he felt it was necessary because of Alex's plundering ways.

Alex was the biggest playboy Dennis knew but his reputation in public was squeaky clean mainly because of the strong PR team that he had at his disposal.

Dennis remembered the many women who he had been forced to break their hearts.

Perhaps such a drastic move from his father was the best approach since Alex had refused to change through the years.

Despite his plundering, Alex had been a reasonable boss to work for.

His mind drifted back to his mother again. The doctor was demanding for a lot of money for her surgery.

Money he didn't have and wouldn't be able to come up with in such a short amount of time.

According to them, she had breast cancer that had progressed rather aggressively and needed to be rooted out if she was ever going to live a normal life.

Dennis clenched his fists as he thought of how weak his mother looked.

She was dying and he couldn't do anything about it.

He felt so useless.

“Dennis!” Alex's loud voice crashed into his thoughts and he jumped in surprise. “Where's your mind at? I've been calling you,” he hissed, glaring at Dennis.

Dennis looked up to find that all the women had left. He flushed and looked at his feet. “I'm sorry sir, I didn't…”

“See the women out. The interview is finished,” Alex waved a hand dismissvely and Dennis walked away.

Half an hour later, he returned and bowed his head.

“I apologise for zoning out earlier sir.” He pleaded, feeling embarrassed that he had made such a mistake.

This was the worst time to get on Alex's bad side since he needed money badly.

He couldn't save his mother if he was unemployed.

“This is unacceptable.” Alex snapped. “You have to be present when you're at work,” He added, his tone unimpressed.

Dennis shrunk at Alex's tone but welcomed the criticism.

Alex had a point. He had gotten carried away at work which wasn't right.

“It won't happen again,” he insisted and Alex grunted.

“What is going on with you? I have noticed you've been a bit slow lately.” Alex asked and Dennis shook his head.

“It's nothing sir.” He was ashamed and he also didn't want to burden Alex with his problems when he was already dealing with a lot.

“Come on, who knows? I might be able to help you.” Alex nugged him unwilling to let the matter rest.

Dennis was many things one of them being incredibly shy and timid.

But Dennis wasn't a slacker so Alex knew something was wrong and Dennis's reaction had just confirmed his suspicions.

“Actually it's…” Dennis trailed off as his emotions got the best of him. “My mother is sick and needs surgery.” He summarized not wanting to go into detail.

Alex's eyes widened and he searched within him for the right thing to say however he couldn't come up with anything.

Dennis wanted to dig a hole and crawl into it. He knew telling Alex would be a bad idea but this was much worse than he had imagined.

He turned to leave.

“I'm sorry about your mother Dennis and if there's anything I can do, let me know,” Alex said finally and Dennis nodded but he didn't turn back to look at him.

Instead, he continued walking until he had reached the door and let himself out.

“Good morning Mr Alex,” Dennis greeted him respectfully.

Alex noticed his assistant refused to meet his eye and sighed.

He was probably embarrassed because of his mother’s condition so he decided to change the topic and turn the spotlight on himself.

“I think I have a solution to my current problem,”

Dennis nodded thinking that Alex had selected one of the women who had auditioned the previous day.

However, Alex’s next words shocked him.

“Let’s get married,”

Dennis blinked, wondering if he had heard it wrong. But when he finally met Alex’s eyes, he realized he was waiting for him to say something.

He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out.

He was stunned. How could Alex even suggest a thing like that? He was a man just like him and he didn’t have interest in men either……

“Just this about it.” Alex said and Dennis felt his heart rate pick up. “I just need a temporary fix to my problem and once I get my parents off my back then…”

That made sense. Actually it made a lot of sense but Dennis felt lightheaded.

“Sir, could I take a moment to think about it?” It was a lot to take in.

Alex stared at him for a moment and then nodded. “Of course. I know it's a lot but just think about it.”

Dennis nodded and suddenly he felt as if the room was closing in on him.

“You can take the rest of the day off since we don't have anything to do today,” Alex told him and Dennis heaved a sigh of relief.

Dennis couldn't get out of there fast enough and the minute the cold air hit his face, his body relaxed.

“What the hell?” He whispered as he began walking towards the gate.

His boss wanted to marry him?? How crazy was that

Lyon’s pov“Then you deal with it as a point of avenging your family, all right? Not going ahead to be the first to throw the first punch. If you hit him first, you might lose that hand. Let him be. Don’t think of him. Paul hasn’t explicitly threatened you. Everything he has done has been for the good of the company and for his own business.“I know that he is not the best person to be around right now. And believe me, it’s coming from me. I hate him. I hate his wife. And seriously, I hate his kid. I confronted her the other day.”“Wait, you confronted her?”“Yes, before the family gala. I just wanted to tell her to stay away from Alex because I was thinking she had something to do with the newspaper thing that was happening to Alex and Dennis.”“I knew it,” I cut in. “I had the same suspicion, but I didn’t know that it was Sophia. My mind was going to Paul.”“Yeah, that whole family is weird, but let’s push that aside right now. Let’s focus on the thing that is here. We can decide to

Lyon’s pov“The meeting we had… it wasn’t really a pleasant one. Paul already knows that you’re out to get him. He knows that anything he says could have him removed from the board meeting, and he’s trying his best to make sure he stays. He’s clinging on. No matter what you throw at him, he’s not going to budge, and he has more than seventy percent of the board on his side. It’s a losing game.”If I didn’t have the amount of shares I had in my company, I would have lost everything to Paul. But I was glad that I had enough money to still remain the top shareholder in my own company.“Well, it was a waste coming here, I guess. I just wanted to know if there was something we could do.”“We can, but not now. We can either sit and relax, have a drink and move on, or waste our time chasing after shadows. Paul is not stupid, so if you try investigating him, you’ll come up empty.”I got to my feet. “Thanks for the drink. I’ll be leaving now.”I was about to pay for it, but then he tapped the

Lyon’s pov“I’d like to stop here,” I said to my driver, who was puzzled by it. He hesitated before slowing down in traffic.“Sir?”“Just park along the curb,” I said.“But sir, there’s a bar here. We’re not allowed to park unless we want to patronize them.”“That’s why I want to get out,” I said.He nodded and parked the car as I got out before the security guard could show up to tell us to move on. He saw me and bowed.“Is he inside?”“Yes.”He stepped back as I walked into the bar. It wasn’t rowdy this time. It was calm, and business had not started. There were a few patrons there, but they were not serious like how it was every single night.I walked to an empty cubicle to see him drinking. He was one of the board members, and he saw me and folded his arms.“Well look who decided to show up.”I smiled, sitting across from him. “Hello, Thomas. How has it been?”He shrugged. “I don’t know. What about you? You seem to be having a little trouble with the office.”“Tell me about it. I’

Alex’s pov“What is it?” I asked him.“You have to pick up the call.”I shook my head. “No, I’m not doing that.”“Come on. You can’t keep pushing away your dad. At some point, you are going to pick up his call, and you are going to talk to him.”“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m not doing that. Look, all my dad has done has been to cause me problems and pain for as long as I can remember. And now you’re telling me that I need to pick up his call? And for what? What’s he going to do for me? Please.”I really wanted to argue with Dennis at this point, but it looked like he had already given up on any arguments. He just wanted peace at this point.“Fine,” I said.I then picked up the call, and I heard his voice.“Are you home?”“Yes, Dad, I am.”“All right. I’m on the interstate highway. I’ll soon be there.”“Interstate highway? Where are you going?”“It doesn’t matter. I’ll be there soon.”He cut the call as I leaned bacj and looked at Dennis who got to his feet.“I’ll have to clean u

Alex’s pov“Maybe with a cloak next time? I’m tired of the same old black suit.”I laughed. “You’re being serious?” I said when I noticed that he was not smiling at all.“I am. We’re billionaires. Let’s turn the gala into something with fashionable dresses. Women are always the ones who are wearing fashionable clothes. Men just wear the same suit. Let me be very honest, you can wear the same suit for every single gala for ten years and nobody will know that it’s the same suit. They keep on thinking that you have enough money to throw getting black suits, but let’s be honest. We all know that so many people can repeat clothes in galas, especially the men. The women… it’s quite difficult. Wearing the same jewelry alone will get a lot of people wondering whether you have money or not.”“So you want a fashion show.”He shrugged. “It is a gala. We can try. And I wish it was a movie so that we can have our own music montage and show where we come out and change and stuff like that.”I laugh

Sophia’s pov“It’s Lydia.”“Uh, what do you want? Money? Cash inflow doesn’t really grow from trees, you know.”“Yes, it does,” she laughed. “Anyway, I’m not calling for that. I’m just calling to know the next move.”I thought about what my father said and sighed. “There is no next move.”“What do you mean there’s no next move?” she gasped. She was already panicking. “We need to do something! The media is dry… they need news!”“I’m taking care of it, Lydia.”“I feel like you’re just laying down in your couch not doing anything but staring at your nails.”“Lydia, I’m quite busy… slumped with work.”“You work?”“I have companies under my name. Of course I work. What do you think I do all day?”“I don’t know. You do what billionaires do.”“Lydia, bye.”Before she could complain, I cut the call. I was already getting frustrated with my plans with my father. But if he was right, that meant that Dennis was about to be gone, and very soon I would have a grieving Alex.I would need to slide i
