Alex’s pov

The study still smelled of old cigars and leather as I walked in here. Dennis followed me in, the butler trailing behind like some silent shadow. My phone was already buzzing in my pocket, screen flashing Mum.

I swiped to answer without thinking.

"Alex," her voice came through, soft but sharp beneath still, "will you be around tomorrow?"

I flicked my eyes over to Dennis and then the butler. "Wait outside for a minute," I said to them. Dennis gave me that look, the one where he wants to say something back—but he doesn't. So he just nodded and both him and the butler walked out, door clicking shut behind them.

“Mum,” I said, pressing on my desk with my hand, “why are you calling me at this time? I just got back.”

“Got back from where?” she asked right away.

“The club,” I said, glancing towards the door as if Dennis might be lurking. “With Dennis.”

There was a silence. A sigh. The kind of sigh that always meant she’d been practising it in her head for the entire evening.
