Seraphina Vale had been warned about Caelric Veyron.

Cold.

Demanding.

Unforgiving.

Those were the three words everyone in Veyron Enterprises seemed to use whenever his name came up.

Nobody had mentioned the little boy sitting in his executive chair.

Seraphina stopped just inside the CEO's office, her fingers tightening around the folder in her hand.

The five-year-old stared at her.

She stared back.

He was dressed in a miniature black suit, his dark hair neatly combed, his tiny shoes barely touching the floor.

Then he pointed at her.

"You're late."

Seraphina glanced at the expensive watch on her wrist.

"I'm three minutes early."

The boy frowned.

"That's late for Daddy."

A man's voice came from behind the desk.

"Zephyr."

Seraphina finally looked toward the CEO.

Caelric Veyron sat behind an enormous black desk, his attention fixed on a tablet. He looked exactly like the rumors described.

Immaculate suit.

Sharp features.

Calm expression.

The kind of man who could make an entire boardroom go silent without raising his voice.

He lifted his eyes toward her.

"Ms. Vale."

"Mr. Veyron."

His gaze moved briefly over her.

Not inappropriately.

Professionally.

Assessing.

"You applied for the executive secretary position."

"Yes."

"You understand the responsibilities?"

"I do."

"Long hours?"

"I'm prepared."

"Confidential information?"

"I know how to keep information confidential."

"Last-minute changes?"

"I adapt quickly."

Caelric leaned back.

"And difficult employers?"

Seraphina allowed herself a small smile.

"I've handled those before."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Amusement.

Perhaps.

"Good."

Zephyr suddenly climbed down from the chair.

"Daddy."

"What?"

"I like her."

Caelric closed his eyes for half a second.

"You've known her for twenty seconds."

"Twenty-three."

Seraphina pressed her lips together to keep from smiling.

Caelric looked at her.

"Ignore him."

"I wasn't going to say anything."

"You were smiling."

"I smile sometimes."

"So I've noticed."

Their eyes met.

The silence lasted a little too long.

Seraphina looked away first.

She reminded herself why she was there.

A position under one of the country's most successful CEOs.

A significant salary.

A career opportunity.

Nothing more.

Caelric opened the folder containing her résumé.

"You have excellent qualifications."

"Thank you."

"Your previous employer says you are exceptionally organized."

"I am."

"He also says you're difficult to intimidate."

Seraphina raised an eyebrow.

"Is that a problem?"

"No."

Caelric closed the folder.

"It may be useful."

Before she could respond, Zephyr walked directly toward her.

He stopped in front of her and looked up.

"Do you like chocolate?"

Seraphina blinked.

"Yes."

"Good."

He turned toward his father.

"She can stay."

Caelric stared at him.

"I haven't hired her yet."

"You should."

"Why?"

Zephyr looked at Seraphina again.

"Because she smiled at me."

Seraphina's heart softened.

She crouched until they were at eye level.

"What's your name?"

"Zephyr."

"That's a beautiful name."

"My daddy chose it."

Seraphina looked toward Caelric.

He was watching them.

Something about his expression had changed.

The coldness was still there, but underneath it was something quieter.

Protective.

Almost tender.

"How old are you, Zephyr?"

"Five."

"And what are you doing in your father's office?"

"I'm helping."

"Helping with what?"

He lowered his voice.

"Finding Daddy a wife."

Seraphina froze.

Caelric immediately stood.

"Zephyr."

The boy grinned.

"What?"

"Outside."

"But—"

"Now."

Zephyr sighed dramatically.

Then he looked at Seraphina.

"Don't leave."

She laughed softly.

"I'll try."

Caelric's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That wasn't an instruction you need to follow."

Seraphina stood.

"Your son seems very determined."

"Unfortunately."

"He's adorable."

"He knows."

That earned another smile from her.

Caelric noticed.

He seemed to notice everything.

"You're still interested in the position?"

"Very much."

"Even after meeting him?"

"Especially after meeting him."

Zephyr smiled from the doorway.

"I told you."

Caelric gave his son a look.

The boy disappeared.

Caelric returned his attention to Seraphina.

"I'll be direct."

"I prefer that."

"If you take this position, you'll be working closely with me."

"I expected that."

"My schedule is unpredictable."

"I can handle it."

"My standards are high."

"So are mine."

His eyebrow lifted.

"You're confident."

"I'm competent."

For the first time, Caelric smiled.

It was brief.

Barely there.

But it changed his entire face.

Seraphina wasn't prepared for it.

Neither, apparently, was Caelric.

The smile disappeared almost immediately.

"You're hired."

Seraphina blinked.

"Just like that?"

"I've already reviewed your credentials."

"And the interview?"

"I wanted to see whether you could handle me."

She smiled.

"And?"

"I haven't decided."

She extended her hand.

"I'll try not to disappoint you, Mr. Veyron."

Caelric looked at her hand for a moment before taking it.

His palm was warm.

His grip firm.

Neither released immediately.

Seraphina felt an unexpected flutter in her stomach.

Caelric seemed to notice the same strange pause.

He released her hand.

"Your desk is outside my office."

"Understood."

She turned toward the door.

"Seraphina."

She stopped.

It was the first time he'd used her first name.

She looked back.

"Yes?"

Caelric's expression was unreadable.

"My son likes you."

"I like him too."

"That could become a problem."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he gets attached easily."

Before she could answer, Zephyr appeared again.

He walked straight between them and took Seraphina's hand.

"Daddy."

Caelric sighed.

"What now?"

"I chose her."

Seraphina looked down at him.

"Chose me for what?"

Zephyr looked up at his father.

Then back at her.

"For us."

Caelric went completely still.

Seraphina's smile faded.

"What does that mean?"

Zephyr grinned.

"It means you're staying."

Caelric looked at his son.

Then at Seraphina.

And for the first time that morning, the billionaire CEO looked genuinely uncertain.

Because he had hired a secretary.

His son had chosen a future family.

And Caelric Veyron had a feeling that his carefully controlled life had just become dangerously complicated.

  • The CEO's Baby Chose Me    The Invitation Neither Child Expected

Elara agreed to meet Elias Veyron under one condition.“I won't meet him in a room where everyone expects me to forgive him,” she told me over the phone. “And I won't listen to another speech about how people were only trying to protect me.”I stood beside the windows in Caelric's office, watching the afternoon traffic move below.“That's fair.”“Is it? Because every time someone discovers something about my childhood, they explain why I should understand their reasons. Nobody asks what it was like to grow up without knowing which parts of my own history were real.”I had no easy answer. For years, I had wanted my mother to explain why she had kept so much from me. Now I understood that an explanation could be necessary without being sufficient.“You don't owe Elias forgiveness,” I said. “The meeting is only an opportunity to hear what he knows. You can leave whenever you want.”“Will you be there?”“Yes.”“And Caelric?”“If you want him there.”Elara paused.“I do. Not because he's a

  • The CEO's Baby Chose Me    The Choice Elias Never Explained

For several seconds, nobody spoke. The name on the back of the agreement seemed to occupy the entire room.**ELIAS VEYRON.**Beneath it sat the date that connected him to the night my father disappeared.Caelric reached for the document, careful not to disturb the edges.“Grandmother, why have we never seen this before?”Marielle looked older than she had when we arrived.“Because your father took the original agreement after Elias signed it. I kept this copy, but I was instructed not to reveal it unless both children returned.”“Both children?” I asked. “You mean Elara and me?”“Yes.”“Who gave you that instruction?”“My husband.”Caelric looked at her sharply. “Grandfather?”She nodded.“He told me that if you ever found yourselves standing together, I should show you the agreement. He believed the promise belonged to the two of you, not to the families who had made it.”I studied the page.“Did he explain why Elias was appointed to decide what happened to it?”“No. He only said tha

  • The CEO's Baby Chose Me    The Promise Made for Two Children

My mother's photograph arrived at 6:42 p.m.I was still at Veyron Enterprises, sitting in my office with the day's board documents spread across my desk. Caelric had gone upstairs to handle an urgent call, promising to return before I left.I opened the photograph. My father's handwriting was unmistakable. The letters leaned slightly to the right, and he always pressed harder when he was angry or afraid. The letter to Muriel Veyron was dated October 18, 2009.*Muriel, if you have signed the second witness statement, then you have already chosen which child the world is allowed to remember.*Below that, another paragraph had been underlined.*I will not allow either child to pay for the promise we made to their fathers.*I read the sentence several times.Their fathers.I knew about my father. I knew what Elara had told us about hers, and I knew that Marcus Vale had supposedly left with my father before returning alone. But what promise had brought them together? And why had Muriel Vey

I barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the name Adrian had sent me.**MURIEL VEYRON.**Caelric's grandmother had supposedly died years before the night my father disappeared. Yet her signature appeared on a witness file connected to the same secret that had followed me throughout my life.By six in the morning, I had made three lists in my notebook. The first contained facts we could verify. The second contained questions that still had no answers. The third contained assumptions I refused to believe until someone produced evidence.I was particularly proud of the third list. It was the shortest. At seven fifteen, Caelric called.“Tell me you slept,” he said instead of greeting me.“I slept.”“How much?”I glanced at the clock. “Enough.”“Seraphina.”“Two hours.”He sighed. “I'm sending breakfast.”“You don't have to.”“I know. I'm doing it because I want to.”I smiled despite myself. “You can't solve every problem by sending food.”“I'm not trying to solve the problem. I'

I stared at the photograph until the words began to blur.**THE BOY MUST NEVER KNOW.****THE GIRL MUST NEVER REMEMBER.****IF EITHER ONE LEARNS WHY, THE AGREEMENT DIES.**And beneath them, the name that had turned an ordinary afternoon into something I could no longer understand.CAELRIC VEYRON.I lowered my phone and looked at the cake box in my other hand. Zephyr had been so excited about our family movie night. He had probably already chosen the film, arranged his pillows, and informed his father that nobody was allowed to fall asleep before the ending. For a moment, I wanted to put my phone away and pretend I hadn't seen the message.I wanted to walk into their home, sit beside Caelric, and listen to Zephyr explain why the moon should belong to him.But the photograph had changed something. Not because I believed Caelric was responsible. I didn't. He had been a child when my father disappeared, and the idea that he had knowingly participated in anything was absurd. What frightened

  • The CEO's Baby Chose Me    The Lunch We Almost Forgot

The elevator doors slid shut, leaving the noise of Veyron Enterprises behind us.For several seconds, neither Caelric nor I spoke. My phone remained in my hand, the anonymous message glowing on the screen like an unwelcome guest.*ADRIAN HAS GIVEN YOU PART OF THE TRUTH. ASK HIM WHO SENT HIM THE WARNING THAT MADE HIM DISAPPEAR.*I had spent so much of my life chasing answers that I had almost forgotten what it felt like to stop searching.Caelric glanced at my phone, then at me.“Are you going to spend our entire lunch thinking about Adrian?”“Probably.”“That is disappointing.”I turned toward him. “Disappointing?”“I was hoping to have at least fifteen minutes of your undivided attention. I had even prepared a conversation that did not involve missing witnesses, altered records, or people who might be pretending to be dead.”Despite myself, I laughed.“You prepared a conversation?”“I am a CEO. Preparation is one of my few marketable qualities.”“Only one?”“Two, if you count my abil
