Mariana closed the heavy oak doors, the soft click sounding like a cell door locking into place. The air inside Alejandro’s private executive suite was freezing—far colder than the conference room downstairs.

She swallowed hard, pressing her back against the door for a brief moment to anchor herself. "What did he do, Alex?" She didn't bother with corporate formalities. In this empty room, stripped of observers, the fragile veneer of professional decorum dissolved. "Tell me what Inigo did."

Alejandro turned around slowly. The city lights from the glass wall behind him cast long, sharp shadows across his angular face. He didn't look angry; he looked entirely, terrifyingly composed. He took a slow sip from his crystal glass before setting it down on his obsidian desk.

"Your brother is ambitious, Mariana," Alex said smoothly, walking toward her with measured, deliberate steps. "A trait I normally respect. But ambition without caution is just reckless stupidity. He forged a guarantor signature on an equipment lease for his coffee tech startup. When his supply chain collapsed last month, he defaulted."

"Forged?" Mariana’s breath caught in her throat. She felt as though the floor beneath her feet had suddenly given way. "Inigo wouldn't... he's just twenty-four! He's naive, he makes mistakes, but he wouldn't commit fraud!"

Alex picked up a thick manila folder from the glass coffee table and tossed it lightly onto the leather sofa between them. "See for yourself. Page three. That is your mother’s signature, digitized and applied without her knowledge to a high-risk corporate indemnity bond. A bond held directly by Montenegro Financial Services."

Mariana stumbled forward, her knees trembling as she flipped open the folder. There it was. Her mother’s signature, unmistakable and crisp, attached to a contract that obligated their modest family home in Quezon City as collateral. Beneath it was Inigo’s frantic handwriting on a series of missed payment notices.

A tear slipped past Mariana’s eyelashes, splashing onto the cold paper. Five million pesos. It was an astronomical number for a family that spent every month juggling utility bills, tuition fees, and house repairs. If Alejandro prosecuted, Inigo wouldn't just go to prison—their mother, whose heart condition was already fragile, would lose everything.

"He was desperate," Mariana whispered, her voice breaking as she looked up at him through blurred vision. "He thought he could pay it back before anyone noticed..."

"Intentions don't balance balance sheets," Alex said coldly, stopping a few feet away from her. "The legal department is preparing the formal charge as we speak. By nine tomorrow morning, the police will serve the warrant at your mother's house in QC."

"No! Please, Alex, don't do that!" Mariana grabbed his arm without thinking, her fingers digging into the fine wool of his suit jacket. "Give me time! I'll work extra hours, I'll take on freelance design jobs, I'll sign my salary over to Montenegro Holdings! Just don't destroy my family. Please."

Alex stared down at her hands clutching his sleeve. For a split second, a crack appeared in his icy facade—a fleeting twitch of his brow, a faint darkening of his dark eyes—before it vanished behind his impenetrable mask.

"Your salary as a junior architect is ninety thousand pesos a month," Alex stated, his tone flat and analytical. "Even if I took every single cent and applied zero interest, it would take you nearly five years to pay off the principal. I am running a conglomerate, Mariana, not a charitable foundation for delinquent younger brothers."

Mariana dropped her hands, her shoulders sagging in utter defeat. Despair, thick and suffocating, wrapped around her chest. "Then why bring me up here?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. "If you've already made up your mind to ruin us, why not just let the lawyers handle it?"

Alex walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking down at the endless stream of headlights crawling through Bonifacio Global City.

"Because," Alex said softly, "I have a problem that five million pesos can solve."

Mariana blinked, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "What?"

Alex turned back to face her. "My grandfather, Don Eduardo Montenegro, is celebrating his eightieth birthday in six months. His health is failing, and his greatest wish is to see me settled down with a respectable, grounded woman before he steps down as Chairman of the Board."

"And what does that have to do with me?"

"Everything," Alex replied. "The board of directors is divided. Half of them want to appoint my cousin, Julian, because he fits the traditional mold—married, family-oriented, predictable. They view me as unstable because I focus entirely on expansion and refuse to build a personal life. Last week, my grandfather gave me an ultimatum: present a credible, long-term fiancée before his birthday gala, or he will cast his tie-breaking vote for Julian."

Mariana stared at him in utter disbelief. "You want me to... what? Help you find a bride?"

"I don't need a bride," Alex said, his tone as businesslike as if he were negotiating a real estate merger. "I need a performer. Someone who can stand beside me for six months, deal with high-society scrutiny, play the part of a devoted partner in front of my family, and strictly follow a non-disclosure agreement."

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her.

"The terms are simple, Mariana. You agree to a fake engagement with me for six months. You will move into my penthouse in BGC to satisfy the media and my grandfather's private investigators. You will attend corporate events, family dinners, and public galas as my future wife."

Mariana’s jaw dropped. "Are you out of your mind? I hate you! You flunked my thesis three years ago, and you just called my architectural work trash an hour ago!"

"And that is precisely why you are perfect," Alex countered smoothly. "You aren't interested in my money, you won't fall in love with me, and you have enough fiery pride to make our relationship look authentic to anyone watching. No one believes a meek, obedient woman would stay with me. But a sharp, headstrong architect who spars with me in public? That, my grandfather will believe."

He reached inside his blazer, drew out a crisp white envelope, and laid it on the coffee table beside the legal folder.

"If you sign the contract, your brother's debt is paid in full tonight. The fraud charges will be wiped clean, and your family's house will be permanently released from collateral. In addition, you will receive a monthly allowance to cover your personal expenses and support your family."

Mariana stared at the white envelope, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. It was an impossible choice. A golden cage or absolute ruin.

"And if I refuse?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Alex met her gaze directly, his eyes unyielding as winter. "Then at 9:01 AM tomorrow, your brother goes to jail, and your mother receives an eviction notice."

Mariana closed her eyes, breathing in the cold, sterile air of the room. She pictured her brother’s terrified face, her mother’s frail heart, and the crumbling home they had built together. She had spent her entire life trying to be independent, trying to build a career on her own merit—and now, in a single evening, her freedom was being bought by the man she despised most in the world.

When she opened her eyes, Alejandro was holding out a montblanc fountain pen toward her.

"What's your answer, Miss Santos?"

Mariana snatched the pen from his hand, her knuckles white with fury, and pulled the contract toward her.

"Where do I sign, Mr. Montenegro?"

Two Years Later... The afternoon sun filtered softly through the wide glass windows of Santos-Montenegro Architecture Studio, casting warm amber beams across polished oak drafting tables and hanging pothos plants. Located right in the heart of Bonifacio Global City, the firm hummed with the gentle, creative chaos of junior designers sketching, laughing, and arguing over structural load calculations. At the corner office, the frosted glass door bore a new, gleaming brass plaque: Mariana Santos-Montenegro, Principal Architect. Inside, Mariana stood in front of a massive corkboard, pinning up the final, approved blueprint for a sustainable eco-resort in Palawan—the very project that had started their entire chaotic, beautiful war. She stepped back, smoothing down the front of her tailored linen jumpsuit, and let out a satisfied breath. A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a heavy chin settled comfortably onto her shoulder. A faint, intoxicating s

  • The CEO's Calamity    Chapter 11: The Silence of the Penthouse

The silence of the 50th-floor penthouse had never felt so deafening. Mariana stood by the kitchen island, the signed deed of release resting beneath her fingertips like a paper guillotine. She was free. No debt. No leverage. No fabricated engagement to save her family from ruin. She could pack her two worn suitcases, call a regular taxi, and head right back to the chaotic, noisy warmth of her family home in Quezon City. She could go back to drafting blueprints in peace, far away from the cold, intimidating shadow of the Ice Falcon. So why couldn't her feet move? "Miss Santos?" Manang Celia’s soft voice broke through her daze. The older housekeeper stood near the hallway holding a folded wool coat. "Are you alright? Sir Alejandro left early for an emergency meeting at the BGC headquarters. He didn't even touch his coffee." Mariana swallowed hard, blinking away the sudden, irritating sting behind her eyelids. "I'm fine, Manang. Just... thinking." She looked down at her hands. For

The kiss wasn't gentle. It was a collision of everything unsaid—of anger, betrayal, exhaustion, and an undeniable, consuming hunger that had been simmering beneath the surface since the moment they met. Mariana’s hands instinctively flew up to push against his chest, but her fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt instead, gripping him as the world spun away. Alex pulled her tighter, his arm banded hard around her waist, lifting her slightly as his lips moved urgently against hers. It tasted like forbidden coffee, tears, and a terrifying kind of surrender. When they finally broke apart, both of them breathing heavily, foreheads pressed together in the dim light of the study, the silence of the penthouse felt heavier than ever. Mariana’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stared into Alex’s dark, dilated eyes, seeing a reflection of her own shock. What are you doing? a voice screamed in her head. This is the man who trapped you! With a sharp intake of br

The elevator doors slid open on the 50th floor with a soft, expensive chime. Mariana marched out of the elevator, her heels clicking sharply against the Italian marble floors. Her emerald-green dress was slightly damp from the drizzle outside, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders, but her posture was rigid, forged from pure, unadulterated fury. She didn't care that Manang Celia gasped softly from the hallway or that the penthouse was deathly quiet. She had one destination. The double doors to Alejandro’s private study at the west wing were slightly ajar. Warm amber light spilled out onto the dark hardwood hallway, along with the faint hum of a classical string arrangement playing softly in the background. Mariana didn't bother to knock. She pushed the heavy oak door open with a resounding bang that rattled the frame. Alejandro looked up from his massive mahogany desk. He was seated in his ergonomic leather chair, a tablet in one hand and a fountain pen in the other. Whe

The café was bathed in the warm, amber glow of Edison bulbs, a sharp contrast to the cold, sterile glass towers outside. It smelled of roasted hazelnut and damp rain, the faint patter of an afternoon drizzle tapping against the large plate-glass windows. Mariana pushed open the door, her eyes scanning the quiet room. Most of the booths were empty, save for a lone figure sitting in the far corner booth half-hidden behind a towering snake plant. As she walked closer, her heels clicking softly against the tiled floor, the figure shifted. A sleek, manicured hand lifted a ceramic teacup. Sitting across the small marble table was a woman who looked like she had stepped straight out of a glossy fashion magazine. Impeccable cream-colored blazer, sharp facial features, and eyes as cold and calculating as a boardroom shark. Bianca Villafuerte. Mariana’s steps slowed to a halt. The high-society socialite and corporate board member who viewed Alex not just as a business rival, but as her pe

  • The CEO's Calamity    Chapter 7: Breaking Point

The space between them felt electrified, tight enough to snap. Mariana could smell the faint, intoxicating mix of cedarwood and espresso clinging to his tailored suit, a scent she was dangerously starting to associate with safety—even if he was the one threat she couldn't outmaneuver. She forced her chin up, refusing to shrink back. "If you brought me here to critique my posture, Mr. Montenegro, you're wasting valuable executive time." Alex’s gaze dropped to her lips for a fraction of a second before snapping back to her eyes. The dark intensity in his look was heavy, completely stripping away the polished CEO veneer. "You push too hard, Mariana," Alex murmured, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling timbre that vibrated right through her chest. "You walk into a boardroom, provoke me in front of my senior executives, and expect there to be no consequences?" "I defended my work," Mariana shot back, her pulse hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "And you approved it. Un
