Mariana Santos has two rules: never mix business with pleasure, and never let Alejandro Montenegro ruin her life twice. Three years ago, Alex was the arrogant exchange professor who ruthlessly failed her thesis presentation, branding her work "lazy and uninspired." Now, through a cruel twist of corporate fate, the Ice Falcon has taken over her architectural firm. To make matters worse, her reckless younger brother accidentally incurs a massive debt tied to a Montenegro subsidiary. Cornered and desperate, Mariana is forced to accept Alex's outrageous proposition: pose as his fiancée for six months to appease his traditional grandfather and secure the family board’s approval, and her brother's debt is wiped clean. Living under the same roof in a high-rise BGC penthouse, the fake couple must navigate board meetings, snarky socialites, and sizzling proximity. As midnight work sessions turn into vulnerable confessions, Mariana realizes that behind Alex’s freezing corporate exterior lies a man who has secretly memorized every flaw she possesses—and loves them all. But when past secrets and corporate sabotage threaten to tear them apart, can a contract built on pretense turn into a lifetime of reality?

Chapter 1: The Ice Falcon of BGC

The smell of burnt barako coffee and impending doom hung thick in the air of the 34th-floor conference room of Arcadia Design Group.

Mariana Santos adjusted her oversized prescription glasses, smoothed down the lapel of her thrifted blazer, and stared at the digital rendering glowing on the main screen. Her design was a masterpiece of tropical modernism—breezy, sustainable, infused with Filipino capiz accents, and engineered to maximize natural light. It was sleek. It was brilliant.

And according to the man sitting at the head of the long mahogany table, it was absolute garbage.

"Trash," Alejandro Montenegro said. His voice was a low, velvet-lined blade that cut cleanly through the stifling silence of the room.

Alex did not look at the rendering. He was looking straight at Mariana, his dark, calculating eyes devoid of any human warmth. He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit that practically screamed old money and ruthless ambition. In the Manila business district, they called him The Ice Falcon—a man who swallowed failing corporations for breakfast and left weeping executives in his wake.

Mariana’s grip on her clipboard tightened so hard her knuckles turned white. Inhale, count to ten, remember you are the sole breadwinner for your family in Quezon City, do not punch a billionaire.

"Mr. Montenegro," Mariana began, her voice steady despite the furious buzzing in her ears. "If you actually look at the structural load calculations on slide four—"

"I don't need to look at structural calculations, Miss Santos, to know when a design lacks a soul," Alex interrupted, leaning back and lacing his expensive fingers together. "This looks like a glorified waiting room for a provincial government office. We are pitching to international luxury resort developers, not building a municipal hall in Cubao."

A collective gasp echoed around the room. Junior architects shrank into their ergonomic chairs. Department heads held their breath.

Mariana’s jaw locked. Cubao? Oh, he just crossed a line.

She stood up, kicking her chair back an inch too loudly. "With all due respect, sir—which is currently hovering somewhere around zero—my design respects indigenous architecture while meeting international standards. If you want a cold, sterile glass box that looks like every other soulless skyscraper in BGC, you hired the wrong firm. Or perhaps your aesthetic palate hasn't evolved past the cold-cut corporate minimalism you picked up during your MBA abroad."

Silence descended so heavily that you could hear the hum of the centralized air conditioning.

Alex’s eyes narrowed. A muscle twitched along his jawline. For a fleeting second, a flicker of something dark and ancient passed through his gaze—a ghost from three years ago, back when he had been a visiting professor who ruthlessly flunked her thesis because she refused to conform to his rigid rules.

"Bold words from an architect whose firm is currently bleeding clients," Alex whispered dangerously, standing up to his full, towering height. He walked slowly around the table, stopping just inches from Mariana. He smelled faintly of cedarwood and expensive espresso. "Confidence is attractive, Miss Santos. Incompetence is fatal. You have forty-eight hours to completely overhaul this concept. If it fails to meet my standards on Wednesday, Arcadia won't just lose this account. We’ll be reviewing staff downsizing."

He turned on his heel, his entourage scrambling to keep up as he strode out of the glass doors, leaving the room shivering in his wake.

"Grabe, Maria..." whispered Leo, her junior partner, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Mamamatay tayo rito. That man is a literal demon."

Mariana shoved her clipboard into her tote bag, her chest heaving with rage. "He’s not a demon, Leo. Demons actually have passion. He’s just a walking, breathing ice sculpture with an ego the size of Manila Bay."

Little did Mariana know, the temperature in her life was about to drop well below freezing.

An hour later, Mariana sat at her cluttered desk in the open-plan office, furiously sketching alternative roof trusses while listening to her favorite OPM playlist through her earphones.

Her phone buzzed violently against the wooden desk. It was an unregistered number. Frowning, she swiped to answer.

"Hello?"

"Is this Miss Mariana Santos?" a crisp, professional voice asked.

"Yes. Speaking."

"This is Atty. Arnaldo from Montenegro Legal Counsel. We are calling regarding an urgent financial matter concerning your younger brother, Inigo Santos, and his startup, Kape-Konek."

Mariana’s heart dropped straight into her stomach. "Inigo? What happened? Did he get into an accident?"

"No, Miss Santos. He didn't get into an accident. But he did default on a five-million-peso equipment loan. A loan that was backed by a Montenegro subsidiary as part of our tech-incubator program."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Five million pesos. That was more money than her entire family earned in a decade.

"Five million?" Mariana choked out, standing up so fast her chair tipped over, drawing stares from nearby colleagues. "That's impossible! He told me the grant was fully secured!"

"He lied," the lawyer replied bluntly. "And unless the debt is settled in full by tomorrow morning, our corporate policy dictates immediate asset seizure and criminal prosecution for fraudulent misrepresentation."

Tears of absolute panic pricked the corners of Mariana’s eyes. Inigo in jail? Her family losing their home? No.

"Please," she choked out, her voice cracking as all her fiery corporate bravado melted into sheer terror. "There has to be another way. A restructuring plan? Community service? Anything?"

There was a brief pause on the line. The lawyer muffled the phone with his hand, speaking in hushed tones to someone in the background. When he returned to the line, his voice was tight.

"There is one alternative. Go down to the 40th-floor private executive suite immediately. Mr. Montenegro wishes to discuss your brother’s... options."

Mariana stared at the dark screen of her phone. The trap had snapped shut.

Ten minutes later, she stood outside the heavy double doors of the executive suite, her palms slick with cold sweat. She had survived college under his critical eye, she had survived corporate downsizing, but as she pushed the heavy oak doors open, she knew her real nightmare was just beginning.

Alejandro Montenegro stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, watching the glittering lights of Bonifacio Global City come alive against the Manila twilight. He held a crystal glass of amber liquid, swirling it slowly.

He didn't turn around as she walked in, but his deep voice filled the silent room.

"Close the door, Miss Santos. We need to talk about your brother's future—and yours."
