Elena Laurent left before sunrise.

She didn't tell Adrian.

She didn't tell the Vale family.

She didn't tell anyone who might try to stop her.

She packed one suitcase.

Two pairs of jeans.

Three blouses.

A dark coat.

Her grandmother's photographs.

A notebook.

The documents Jonathan had given her.

And the small wooden jewelry box that had survived the collapse of the Laurent family.

Everything else stayed behind.

The apartment looked almost untouched when she finished.

A strange thin

Adrian Vale was halfway through a meeting when his phone vibrated. He ignored it.The room was filled with people who had learned not to interrupt him.Three executives sat across the polished conference table. Two lawyers occupied the far end. His chief financial officer stood beside a screen displaying acquisition figures.Adrian stared at the numbers without really seeing them.“Again,” he said. The CFO gobbled.“We're confident the Laurent assets can be brought under control within six months.”“Confident isn't a number.”“Eighty-seven percent probability.”“Better.”His phone vibrated again. This time, Adrian looked at it.One message.SHE'S GONE.His expression didn't change.“Continue,” he said. The CFO hesitated.“Sir?”“I said continue.”The presentation resumed.Adrian placed the phone facedown.Nobody in the room knew that his attention had left the meeting entirely.Elena was gone. For the past forty-eight hours, every person he had sent looking for her had returned with n

“Elena Laurent.”The voice came through the speaker again. She stood frozen in the darkness, one hand gripping the edge of the desk.“Who are you?”Silence. Then a soft click. The emergency lights came alive. The voice was gone.Elena turned toward the hidden doorway.Marcus stood there. His jacket was torn at the shoulder. A thin line of blood ran from his temple. She rushed toward him.“What happened?”“Nothing that matters.”“You're bleeding.”“I've been bleeding for better reasons.”He shut the door behind him and locked it.Elena stared at him.“You knew this room existed.”“Yes.”“You knew about Laurent Holdings.”“Yes.”“You knew I was the sole heir.”Marcus didn't answer. That was answer enough.Elena's anger rose.“You've known all of this from the beginning.”“I've known enough.”“You could have told me.”“And watched you walk straight into a trap?”“I was already in one.”“No,” Marcus said. “You were in several.”He moved toward the desk.Elena stepped in front of him.“Who

The tunnel smelled of wet stone and old earth.Elena kept one hand against the wall as she moved through the darkness, the envelope pressed tightly against her chest.Behind her, something crashed aboveground. Then came shouting.Marcus.She stopped. For one terrible second, she considered turning back. Then she remembered his face.Go.Elena forced herself forward. The tunnel narrowed before opening into a small concrete chamber. A single emergency light flickered overhead. There was a steel door at the far end.She tried the handle.Locked.Her hand went to the key Marcus had given her.The key slid into the lock perfectly.A click. The door opened.Elena stepped into a room she had never seen before. It looked like a private archive.Shelves covered every wall. Metal filing cabinets stood beneath them. There were old ledgers, property records, certificates, photographs and boxes marked with dates stretching back decades. In the center stood a desk.On it was a laptop.Beside it sat

Elena knew she had reached the safe house when the car stopped pretending to be a car.The engine went silent. No streetlights. No traffic. No houses close enough to identify. Just a narrow dirt road disappearing into a wall of dark trees.“Stay inside,” the driver said.Elena looked at him through the rearview mirror. “You said we were safe.”“We are.”“That doesn't sound reassuring.”“It wasn't meant to.”He opened his door.Elena's hand tightened around the small pistol she'd taken from the glove compartment. She hadn't fired it once. She wasn't sure she could. But holding it made her feel less like prey. The driver walked around to her door.“Three rules,” he said. “Don't use your phone. Don't open the curtains. And don't leave this property unless I tell you to.”“What happens if I break one?”“You won't.”He opened the door.Cold air rushed in.Elena stepped out.The safe house looked nothing like a safe house. It was an old farmhouse, two stories, gray stone, with a sagging por

  • The CEO’s Ex-Wife Became a Billionaire   Chapter 8: Three Years Earlier

Three years earlier, Elena Laurent had not known Adrian Vale well enough to hate him.She had only known his name.Everyone did.Adrian Vale was the kind of man people noticed before he entered a room.At twenty-nine, he had already taken control of Vale International's most profitable divisions. Newspapers called him ruthless. Competitors called him arrogant. Executives called him brilliant.Elena had always thought those descriptions sounded exaggerated. Then she met him.And discovered they weren't.It happened at a charity gala her grandfather hosted at the Laurent estate. The ballroom was filled with politicians, investors, celebrities, and old-money families, who knew exactly how much every person in the room was worth.Elena hated those evenings. She preferred quiet dinners, books, and disappearing into the background. Her grandfather used to tease her about it."You were born into a family that owns half the city," he would say. "You cannot spend your whole life hiding behind

The black car was getting closer. Elena could see its headlights in the side mirror, two white circles cutting through the darkness. Jonathan kept both hands on the steering wheel. "How far to the next town?" Elena asked. "About fifteen minutes." "Can we make it?" "We have to." The car behind them accelerated. Jonathan's eyes narrowed. "They're not trying to pass." Elena looked back. The vehicle moved toward the center line. Then dropped behind them. Then accelerated again. A warning. A threat. "They're going to hit us," Elena whispered. Jonathan didn't answer. He didn't need to. He pressed the accelerator. The car surged forward. Elena gripped the door. "Who are they?" "I don't know." "You knew someone was following me." "I suspected." "You should have told me." "I was trying to get you somewhere safe." "This doesn't look safe." Jonathan gave her a grim glance. "No." The black car suddenly moved into the opposite lane. Elena's breath caught. It came a
