Adrian got back about two hours later. He looked as if he hadn't slept in a week. His suit was rumpled and dirty, his eyes blood red, and there was a gash on his knuckles that said he'd punched something hard, probably a wall.

"Daniel got away," he said before I had a chance to ask anything. "Customs flagged the fake passport, but he bolted before they could grab him. By the time the agents reached the gate, he was long gone."

"Where did he go?" I asked.

"Nobody knows for sure. He could be back

I didn't sleep that night. I couldn't. My mind kept replaying that photograph of Adrian with bound hands and blood on his face. Grace slept in her bassinet beside me, and all night I watched her sleeping body move slowly with the rising and falling of her little chest. She was small and vulnerable; so was Adrian now.Samuel got me to eat breakfast at six o'clock in the morning, toast with butter. I chewed the bread and swallowed, feeling nothing of its taste or texture in my mouth."Marcus's team is going to meet us at the airport," Samuel informed me. Grace was cradled in his arms; he bounced her carefully. "Two people by the names of Tom and Lisa. They've been working for Adrian for years; they know Switzerland.""They better know how to be invisible.""They're very good at what they do." Samuel looked at me. "Elena, you don't have to do this by yourself. Marcus's friends will be there with you, too. They'll be in another office.""It won't matter where else they are."A man appeare

I did not get any sleep during the night. No way I could close my eyes. All I saw were photos. Adrian with his hands tied, bloody face, broken nose, bruised eyes… Grace slept in her bassinet, right next to my bed, and all I did was stare at her peaceful breathing. Small. Vulnerable. Helpless. Just like Adrian is now.But I still had some food inside me. Samuel forced me to sit and eat toast with butter at six in the morning. And when I chewed and swallowed, it seemed there was no taste in anything."The people who work for Marcus will be waiting at the airport for you," Samuel told me, holding Grace in his arms. "They are called Tom and Lisa. They know Switzerland, they will help you.""They better know how to be discreet.""They're doing their job very well," Samuel assured. "You won't have to do this alone, Elena. They're in the same building, not in the same room.""That is exactly what matters."Marcus entered from the hallway carrying a duffel bag and having the expression on his

The FBI agents dragged Catherine off, and all was silent in the hallway. I just stood there holding Grace and felt my limbs turn into leaden weights. Marcus locked the door behind himself, but stayed with his back turned to it. His face was pale, and his hand was resting on the grip of his gun."Samuel," Marcus said. "Call the Lindenhoff facility in Switzerland. Now."Samuel quickly picked up the phone and fumbled for a bit, pressing the wrong numbers twice in the process. Finally, he connected and put the phone on speaker."One ring.""Two rings.""Three rings."At last, a woman picked up the call. "Lindenhoff Psychiatric Facility, how may I direct your call?""This is Samuel Cole," Samuel said. "I would like to speak to Adrian Voss. He's a visitor that came this morning."There was a pause on the other side. "I'm sorry, sir. We currently have no visitors by this name."Something stirred in my stomach. "That's not true," I said. "He was there, he even called me while he was there.""

I made seven consecutive calls. It kept ringing all the way to voicemail, which made me sick to my stomach hearing Adrian's pleasant voice telling me to leave my name and message."He won't answer," I said. My voice squeaked in terror. My fingers were numb and my chest felt like an invisible force was compressing it. Marcus reached for his phone."I'm contacting his security detail in Switzerland," he said. "They'll be able to give us more details."Samuel got up from the sofa, took Grace from me. For God's sake, she was still asleep, praise be to God. I didn't think I would survive watching her crying."Let's call our sources in the facility," Samuel proposed.I sat with Grace while my brain went through all kinds of worst-case scenarios: what if the guys working for Catherine caught up to Adrian? What if my mother had disappeared? What if this entire journey was a set-up?"Elena.""Huh?""Moment, breathe.""My heart beats perfectly fine.""You're hyperventilating."As Marcus said, m

  • The CEO's Hidden Heiress: Pregnant with His Heir   THE WAITING GAME

Two days after Adrian left for Switzerland, both Grace and myself were discharged from the hospital. I didn’t want to return to the penthouse; it seemed so empty without Adrian there. However, there was no other place for me to go, as my old apartment was full of all of Martha’s belongings—things I was not ready to deal with yet.Marcus drove us back home. He kept looking at me through the rearview mirror as if he were worried that I would break down at any time."I am NOT going to cry," I said to him."I didn’t say anything," he replied."You didn’t have to."When we got to the parking garage, Marcus assisted me in getting Grace and the rest of my stuff upstairs. When we entered the penthouse, it felt colder than it had been before which I could remember, in spite of the afternoon sun shining through the windows."Samuel is coming by later to see you," Marcus said as he placed the diaper bag on the couch. "He wants to check up on you""Has Adrian called yet?""Not yet. He has landed

  • The CEO's Hidden Heiress: Pregnant with His Heir   The impossible Truth

For what felt like hours I stared at the screen on my cellphone until Adrian shook me by my shoulder."Elena what's wrong, you look like you've seen a ghost!""I didn't see a ghost. What I saw was way worse than seeing one!." I turned my phone to Adrian. "Samuel just texted me that my mom is still alive! She’s been locked away in Switzerland this whole time."Adrian snatched the phone and read the text message twice. His expression changed from confusion to anger in about three seconds."That's not possible," he said. "Catherine confessed to murdering her and was found guilty in a court of law where there was sufficient evidence to convict.""Well, Catherine has confessed to several things that are not true — that's what liars do." I took my phone back and replied to Samuel:Elena: Why should I believe that you're telling the truth about my mom?Samuel: I can provide you with proof. I have photos, hospital documents, and letters that were written to you by your mom and never delivered
