Se connecterVictoria Voss arrives at exactly nine o’clock.
She is a smaller and colder version of her son ... her silver hair is pulled back tight ... her suit looks sharp enough to cut glass ... and her eyes look at everything like it is not good enough. I am at my desk when she walks in fast ... her assistant follows behind her with a small computer. She stops when she sees me. "You are new." "Yes, ma'am." She looks at me from head to toe. "Young ... pretty. I hope you are good at your job." "I try to be, ma'am." Her lips press together. She starts to say something else ... but then Adrian's office door opens. "Mother." His voice sounds calm ... but I hear the warning hiding under it. "Come in." Victoria moves inside without looking at me again. The door closes ... and I let my breath out. For the next hour ... I work while I hear voices talking behind the door. I hear small parts ... wedding ... merger ... timeline ... suitable heir. Each word makes my chest feel tight. When the door finally opens ... Victoria's face looks proud and happy. "We will make the guest list next week. Sophia's mother is already planning the engagement party." Adrian's face is hard like stone. "I said I will think about the timeline." "You will agree to it." Victoria's voice is hard. "The board expects the announcement by the end of the month. Do not disappoint them." She turns to leave ... and stops next to my desk. "What did you say your name was?" "I did not. It is Elena." "Elena." She says it like the name tastes bad. "Keep doing a good job." Then she is gone. The quiet after she leaves feels like there is no air. Adrian stands in his doorway ... his tie is loose ... his jaw is tight. "Close the door." I stand up slowly. "Is that an order?" "It is a request." He looks at me ... and something in his face makes my chest hurt. "Please." I walk inside and close the door behind me. He stands by the window ... his back to me. "She is already planning the wedding. Invitations ... the place ... everything. She does not care what I want." "Then why are you going along with it?" "Because if I do not ... she will find a way to destroy everything I have built." He turns around. "The Voss family does not do love. They do power." I hold my arms around myself. "That sounds lonely." "It is." He moves toward me ... slow ... like he knows what he is doing. "That is why I have not stopped thinking about that night." My breath stops. "Adrian ..." "I know you are hiding something, Elena." He stops close to me. "I have watched you for weeks. The way you jump when someone talks about the merger. The way you go to the bathroom every afternoon. The way your hand keeps going to your stomach." My heart is beating fast. "Tell me the truth," he says in a low voice. "Whatever it is ... tell me." I open my mouth to lie ... to change the subject ... to protect myself like I have been doing for months. But I am so tired of running. "I am pregnant." My words fall into the quiet room. Like stones in water. Adrian does not move. "The night we were together," I say ... and my voice is shaking. "I did not know until weeks later. And by then ... I had seen who you were. What you were. I thought if you found out ... you would take the baby. Or worse ... you would not care at all." He does not move. He does not speak. "I am not telling you because I want anything," I say fast. "I do not want your money. I do not want to ruin your merger. I just ..." My voice breaks. "I could not keep lying. Not after everything you said." Adrian looks at me for a long time ... a painful time. Then his eyes go down to my stomach. "Mine," he says. ... It is not a question. "Yes." He lets his breath out slowly ... and something in his face changes. The cold mask breaks ... and under it is something real ... something I never thought I would see. Fear. "You hid this from me for three months," he says ... his voice rough. "You carried my child and you never told me." "I was scared." "Of me." "Of what you stand for." I put my hand on my stomach. "You are a billionaire, Adrian. Your family is planning a wedding with a rich heiress. What was I supposed to think? That you would want a baby from a waitress?" He steps closer. "I looked for you for weeks." "I did not know that." "I left you my number." "A first name on a piece of paper is not a number." He reaches out ... and before I can move back ... his hand rests on my stomach. I freeze. His hand is warm ... his fingers are spread wide ... like he is trying to feel something that is not there yet. But his eyes are fixed on where his hand touches me ... and in them I see something I never thought I would see. Wonder. "My child," he says in a low voice. "Our child." I do not know what to say. I stand there ... shaking ... while his thumb moves in a slow circle over my belly. "I will not let anyone hurt you," he says quietly. "Or the baby. I promise." "Adrian ..." "Don't." He looks at me. "Don't tell me this changes nothing. It changes everything." I shake my head. "Your mother. Sophia. The merger ..." "I do not care about any of that." "You should." I step back ... and his hand falls away. "If they find out ... they will come after me. After the baby. You said it yourself ... your family does not do love. They do power. And this baby is power they will want to control." His jaw gets tight. "I will not let them." "You cannot stop them if you marry Sophia. You will be tied to her family ... and I will be the scandal they use to hurt you." He runs his hand through his hair ... and for the first time since I met him ... he looks lost. "What do you want me to do?" he asks. "I do not want you to do anything. I just wanted you to know the truth." I move toward the door. "Now you do. The rest is up to you." "Elena." His voice stops me. "Where are you going?" "Back to my desk. I have work to do." "You are not going anywhere." He crosses the room in three steps and locks the door. "Not until we figure this out." "There is nothing to figure out." "You are carrying my child." He leans against the door ... blocking me. "That means you are not facing this alone. Whether you like it or not." I look at his face ... looking for the cold boss ... the man who leaves money on the bedside table. But all I see is someone as scared as I am. "What about Sophia?" I whisper. "I will handle Sophia." "And your mother?" Something hard shows in his face. "I have spent my whole life doing what my mother wants. This time ... I choose for myself." He reaches for my hand ... his fingers hold mine. "I choose you," he says. "And our child." My eyes feel hot. "You do not even know me." "I know you are brave. I know you are stubborn. I know you have been carrying this weight alone ... and you never asked for anything." He brings my hand to his lips. "That is enough for now." I want to pull away. I want to run. But his hand is warm around mine ... and for the first time in months ... I do not feel alone. The door handle moves. "Adrian?" Sophia's voice cuts through the quiet. "Why is your door locked? I came to talk about the engagement party." Adrian's hand holds mine tighter. I look up at him ... my heart is beating hard. He looks at me ... and in his eyes ... I see him making the choice. Between the world he was born into ... and the one he is only starting to imagine. "Stay here," he says in a low voice. "Do not move." He lets go of my hand and reaches for the lock. I hold my breath. The door swings open. Sophia stands in the doorway ... her smile is on her face. But when she sees me ... against the wall ... my hand on my stomach ... my eyes red ... her face changes. "Adrian?" Her voice gets sharp. "What is going on?" I look at Adrian. He looks at me. And in the space between us ... everything changes. The phone screen glowed in my hand, and Samuel's face stared back at me from the photo. His hair was grayer now than in that picture, but the nose was the same, the jaw was the same, the eyes that had looked at me with kindness for weeks. My stomach turned over, and my stitches pulled hard enough to make me gasp.Adrian stood up from the couch so fast that the cushion fell to the floor. He was looking at Samuel now, his hands balled into fists at his sides. "You've been playing us this whole time?"Samuel didn't move from the chair. His face was completely still. No shock, no anger, nothing except that same calm expression he'd worn since the day we met. "I can explain," he said."Then explain." My voice came out louder than I meant. Grace stirred in my arms, so I held her tighter and lowered my voice. "You have two minutes before I let Marcus do whatever he wants with you."Samuel looked at Marcus, then at Adrian, then at me. He took a deep breath, and his shoulders sagged like someo
The gravel crunched under my shoes. Cold air bit my cheeks. Margaret stood in the doorway with her hands folded, the porch light making her shadow stretch across the steps like something reaching for me."You look like your mother," she said. Her voice was soft in a way that made my stomach twist.I stopped a few feet away, shoving my hands into my jacket pockets. "She died when I was two. I don't remember her face."Margaret's expression didn't change, but her fingers tightened around each other. "No. I don't suppose you would."The wind picked up. I pulled my sweater tighter across my chest. Adrian was somewhere behind me. I could hear Marcus circling around the side of the house. The wire in my bra pressed hard against my ribs. Every breath reminded me it was there."Did you kill her?" The words came out flat. I didn't take them back.Margaret stepped aside, gesturing into the house without answering. "We should talk inside. It's too cold out here for a woman who just had a baby."
I couldn't sleep that night either. Grace would wake up every two hours and feed. While Adrian slept next to me, I would give her her bottle in the dark. The breathing of Adrian remained calm – he was so tired that he was sleeping like a log even though Grace kept screaming.Three in the morning. Coldness enveloping us. I pulled the blanket closer and watched how Grace ate the milk, her mouth slightly hanging open. After feeding, she fell back to sleep again. I put her back into the bassinet and lay down myself.I kept remembering the conversation with Catherine. I kept remembering the stories about Marcus, Samuel and Richard. Each of these guys seemed to have something to hide, and now I know about that. Then there was my mother. My real mother. Who had been dead since that horrible day, when she had crashed their car. Had she known something about Richard, about the company or about Margaret, who was ruling everything from the shadows during the last fifty years?I didn't have an an
It was deathly silent. And it was like some invisible force had pinioned the air against the floor. Marcus had his hand on the gun, a grin that had nothing to do with the one he usually wore playing across his face. This wasn't the half-grin I was used to seeing. It was a real grin, and the sight of it sent shivers down my spine."Marcus," Adrian called calmly. "What's she talking about?"Marcus stayed quiet, his fingers gripping the trigger while he sized up his options and his victims."You put your name on the transfer documents," Samuel said slowly, taking several steps backwards and raising his hands. "You witnessed Victoria signing her ownership rights to the company over to me.""I've witnessed many things." Marcus answered quietly. "Not every single witness has anything to do with the case. Sometimes the person witnessing just happens to be standing close by.""What does that mean?" I frowned."Are you seriously asking what it means?" Adrian took a step forward and positioned
The screen of my mobile lit up my hand and there was a familiar face looking at me back from there. His hair was slightly greyer than it used to be, but it was him nonetheless. Same nose, same chin, same eyes that had seen nothing but sympathy and care in the weeks I spent in the company of these two people. My stomach twisted and the stitches protested."Not possible," I whispered. However, Marcus did not move a muscle and continued to stare at the photo. "Tracked the documents personally. Samuel Cole signed the transfer papers six months ago. There's his signature on every page," he pointed out.Adrian jumped up so quickly that the cushion from the sofa fell down. He fixed his gaze on Samuel. "So it turns out that you've been playing us all along!"Samuel remained where he was, sitting opposite me. Still that same indifferent expression, no traces of emotions visible on his face."You can explain," I said and immediately regretted raising my voice too loud as Grace stirred in my arm
Glass shattered, and I covered my face to avoid any cuts from the debris flying inside. Tiny shards of glass rained down, stinging my cheeks and arms. I could hear Dr. Meier yelling something in German. I caught sight of his hand reaching into his jacket pocket and throwing his gun to the floor. I heard a thud and saw the doctor grabbing his shoulder with blood dripping from his white coat sleeve. Two figures broke through the window. They wore black tactical uniforms with visors covering their heads. The first one tackled Dr. Meier to the floor and made a loud sound as he was punched in the face. The second rushed to Adrian and started cutting off his handcuffs with a tiny metal device."Elena, get down!" Adrian yelled.I fell to my knees and slowly crept towards the corner of the room. The wound on my belly burned with each motion I made. Glass cracked under my knees.Dr. Meier was howling something incomprehensible in German. The punch to his face silenced him abruptly. The second
I couldn't open the letter that night. I held it in my hands for hours turning it over and over, the weight of it all pressing down on me, and a feeling of a conversation I was not ready for, but could not escape from. The baby twitched and kicked, as if it knew the important things in my life we
I didn't sleep that night.Everytime I closed my eyes, there was Sophia's face. Everytime I tried to breathe, there was her hands wrapped around my neck. She wasn't even in the room, but she was everywhere. In my head. In my chest. In every pulse, in the way my heart refused to stop racing.Martha
Working in Adrian Voss’s office is hard to take. A special kind of hard.I have been here six days now. I fix his files. I answer his phone. I get his coffee. And all the time … I feel him watching me. Waiting. Waiting for me to make a mistake. But the hardest part is not him. It is her.Sophia Lau
ONE MONTH LATERThe job at Voss Group was supposed to be safe.I told myself that every single day for four weeks. I sat in my small cubicle on the fourteenth floor, worked on data, kept my head down, and never looked up when the big executives walked past.I stayed quiet. Invisible. Careful. But t
