Chapter 1

Greenwich
Before I could even process what was happening, the phone in Landon Law’s pocket, its screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracks, started ringing.

A message notification popped up on the lock screen.

[Clara]: “Landon, I’m scared being here alone…”

A flicker of panic crossed his eyes. He quickly turned off the screen.

When he looked up again, his face was full of guilt as he tucked the blanket around me.

“Stella, the foreman’s calling me back to the construction site. Just rest, alright? I’ll find a way to cover your treatment.”

Before, hearing those words would have made my heart ache.

I would have cried, then handed over every last cent I’d earned.

But now, all I felt was disgust.

Right then, a mechanical voice suddenly sounded in my mind.

[Detected male lead’s lie: “Returning to the construction site to earn money for medical expenses.”]

[Lie identified. Reward granted: Brain tumor progression has been halted.]

As the notification faded, the splitting pain in my head, the kind that felt like it might explode at any moment, actually eased, as if by a miracle.

He had barely left when my attending doctor walked in right after.

“Miss Ross, the tumor is already pressing on your nerves. You need to pay the full 60,000 for treatment by tomorrow. Otherwise, you won’t last a month.”

I took out my phone and looked at the remaining balance of 52 dollars and let out a bitter laugh.

For eight years, every cent I made had gone to him.

And in the end, all I got in return was a ridiculous act of playing poor.

I took a deep breath, pulled the IV needle from the back of my hand, and struggled out of bed, steadying myself against the wall as I stumbled after him.

The man who, just ten minutes ago, had claimed he was heading to a construction site stepped out of the general ward and, in the next breath, was dressed in an immaculate custom-tailored suit.

On his wrist was a watch worth a million, and he was striding quickly toward the VIP executive ward on the top floor.

Through the crack in the door, I heard a woman’s soft, delicate voice complaining, “Landon, the smell of disinfectant in this hospital is awful.”

Landon’s eyes were filled with a tenderness I had never once seen before.

He gently stroked her hair.

“Be good, Clara. I’m sorry you had to put up with this. I’ve already bought this private hospital. From now on, the entire building will be reserved just for you to recover in, alright?”

The laughter between the man and the woman inside the room pierced straight through my heart like a blade.

The once-proud heir to the Law family, who had valued his pride above life itself, now wagged his tail at me like a stray, begging for mercy.“Clara’s a liar. You’re the only one who ever truly loved me. If you forgive me, I’ll be your dog for the rest of my life. I’ll wash dishes, carry bricks—anything, as long as I can support your research…”Looking at him, groveling in the dirt, I didn’t even feel like mocking him anymore.I looked down at him, then slowly crouched, my voice low enough that only the two of us could hear as I tore apart his last shred of hope.“Landon, haven’t you been wondering why a perfectly healthy man like you suddenly ended up with the exact same terminal illness I had?”His sobbing stopped abruptly. He stared at me, eyes wide with terror.“Karma doesn’t miss,” I said softly, my gaze sweeping over his ruined body, each word landing like a blade.“You ever wonder how I got better? You cured me.”His pupils shook violently. His lips trembled, but no sound came o

A blinding glare stabbed into Landon’s eyes.It was a live broadcast of the city’s most anticipated tech innovation competition. On the screen, free from illness and reborn, I stood at the highest podium beneath converging spotlights, dressed in a sharp white tailored suit.“Congratulations to Miss Ross, whose groundbreaking chip patent has won the grand prize!”The host handed me the trophy, voice brimming with excitement. “Miss Ross, this patent has made you worth over twenty million overnight, a complete leap in status. What would you like to say?”I took the microphone. Facing a sea of flashing cameras, I smiled—calm, brilliant, and untouchable.“I want to thank the past eight years of hardship. They woke me up. They taught me I should never waste a mind like mine being someone else’s stepping stone. From now on, I decide my own fate.”Thunderous applause filled the hall.On the screen, I shone—radiant, dazzling, impossible to look away from. And below that same screen, in the dar

“Mr. Law, you still owe us the last twenty grand for putting on that show for your girl. Time to settle up.”The bald man grinned, his face twisted with menace.“I… I’m bankrupt. My accounts are frozen…” Landon shook uncontrollably. The smile vanished from the man’s face. He grabbed Landon by the collar. “No money? You had me play along with your little act, and now you think you can walk away?”The moment he realized the once-mighty heir was truly broke, something vicious lit up in his eyes. With a flick of his hand, the men dragged Landon like a dead log straight into the public restroom at the end of the hallway.Bang! The door slammed shut and locked.“Ah—! My head! Please stop!”His screams tore through the air, drowned beneath the dull thud of fists hitting flesh. This time, there were no subtle signals and restraint.Heavy boots drove into his chest again and again.Crack. Crack. Two ribs snapped clean. The agony of shattered bones and the relentless pressure in his skull fused

“Impossible! I go for top-tier checkups every year. How could I suddenly have terminal brain cancer?!”Landon completely lost it.He flipped the medical cart over in a frenzy, smashing the two-hundred-thousand-dollar monitor by the bedside to pieces.“Quacks! I’ve got money, more than enough! Treat me! Get me the best specialists in the world, now!”The doctor dropped to his knees amid the wreckage, crying out in despair.“There’s no treatment, Mr. Law! The tumor’s growing too fast; it’s too aggressive. Even the best in the world couldn’t save you… you won’t last a month!”Won’t last a month.Three days ago, those exact words had been said to Stella.Landon collapsed onto the bed, his face drained of all color.A fear unlike anything he had ever known coiled around his heart like a snake, tightening with every breath.Only then did he realize that the backlash coming for him had only just begun.“Mobilize everything! Get me the best neurosurgeon from abroad!”Desperate to survive, Land

I pulled the IV cannula from the back of my hand without hesitation. Meeting his stunned gaze, I spoke each word clearly, my voice firm and final.“Mr. Law, your little ‘playing poor’ game is over. Take your precious Miss Shaw and get out of my sight.”At the word “get out,” Landon froze for a moment. Then let out a mocking laugh.“Stella, look at you. Got some nerve now? Using a breakup to threaten me?” He looked down at me with open contempt.“Without me, you won’t even be able to afford painkillers. You’ll die in the street like a stray dog.“I’d like to see how long you can keep this up. When you’re on your knees begging me, don’t expect me to go easy on you.”With that, he wrapped an arm around Clara and walked off without another glance.I didn’t spare him one either. I flexed my wrist, now steady and strong, and headed straight to the nurse’s station to check out.The cancer was gone. This body, reborn, felt better than it had in years.Three days later, Landon spent twenty mill

“As long as your money and your love belong to me alone, that’s enough.”A few careless words from Clara were enough to rip away Landon’s mask completely.I suddenly remembered five years ago, when he took me home to meet his alcoholic father. That man had sneered at me for being useless, for not helping his son repay his debts, and had thrown a bowl of scalding soup at me, ordering me to get out.Landon had shielded me without hesitation, taking the full force of it.His back had blistered horribly, yet with reddened eyes, he swore he would marry no one but me.Back then, I thought he loved me enough to defy his own family. Now it seemed even that “alcoholic father” had probably been nothing more than an actor he hired to test me.The sheer absurdity of it all sent a chill through my entire body.I stared straight at him, my voice sharp as a blade.“Landon, that extra you hired five years ago—the one who threw the soup at you… did you ever pay him?”Landon’s expression shifted instant
