“I’m so sorry, Mrs Harris. We were unable to save the baby.”
Sydney Harris touched her stomach, frowning at the doctor. When the doctor had told her to see him in his office about the cause of her stomach pain, the least thing she expected to hear was this. “What are you talking about?” The doctor sat up, stretching a file toward Sydney from across his office table. “You might not have been aware, but you were two weeks pregnant when you were rushed in yesterday. The stomach pain you had felt last night was a result of a miscarriage.” Sydney picked up the file, running her eyes through the diagnosis. So she had been pregnant for two weeks and she had no idea of it all this time only for her to discover that she had lost the child. Knowing this cut deep. Sydney wasn’t one to break down in the presence of others so she withheld the pain of losing her child and stood up. “Alright, thanks for letting me know this. Have a good day, doctor.” With that she kept the file in her bag and left the hospital. She maintained a stoic face until she got to her bedroom. She broke down in tears in the bathroom and remained in the jacuzzi until nightfall. She could no longer hold back her tears. She never knew a child was growing in her, but knowing that she had one just after she had lost it was unbearable. During dinner while she was waiting for her husband to come back home, she considered whether she should let him know about the child they had lost. After all, they had been married for five years and had been expecting a child. And she finally had one. Just yesterday, her child was still in her womb, but now it wasn’t. Hearing the door leading to the living room opening, she knew her husband was back from work so she blinked back the tears in her eyes and maintained a calm look. Not long, Julian walked by the dinning room, he glanced at her. “I won’t be eating with you tonight, I’ve had dinner already.” Without saying any other words, he walked up the stairs, going toward his bedroom. Just like how he wasn’t having dinner with her, he wasn’t staying in the same bedroom with her. Sydney didn’t know what had happened, but since a year ago, her husband had grown distant from her. And the incident that had happened yesterday at that event just confirmed that there was now an unspoken distance in their marriage. Sydney didn’t bother to ask Julian why he didn’t want to eat dinner with her. Normally she didn’t expect him to join her for dinner as she usually has her dinner in the private dining room in her bedroom. She came down for dinner because she wanted to tell him about the child they had lost. The child whom she never knew of its existence until that afternoon. Now that Julian had no intention of joining her, there was no point seating in the general dining room. Besides, losing her child had made her lose her appetite. Sydney stood and beckoned a maid working nearby. “Clear the dining table and share the food with the staff. I won’t be having dinner tonight,” Sydney said with a cold expression. Even before she lost her child, Sydney rarely smiled at anyone. The maid she had called noticed that something must be bothering Sydney, but due to how closed off Sydney was, the maid dared not ask her anything about it. “Okay, Ma’am,” the maid nodded, already clearing the table. Sydney went back to her room, she had a quick shower and was doing her nighttime skincare routine when a knock came on her door. “I don’t want to see anyone. Leave.” Sydney ordered, not caring to know whoever was knocking. Her husband barely comes to her room so she knew the person must be one of the house staff. To her displeasure, the door opened and she was surprised to see Julian walking into her room. She gaped at him, trying to figure out why he had come to meet her. “What do you want?” Julian's facial expression was grim and his stance was rigid. It was almost as if he didn’t want to spend much time around his wife. “I need to tell you something.” Sydney nodded. “It is good you came. I also have something to tell you,” Sydney said. She had decided to tell Julian about the miscarriage. Julian was the father of that child, he deserved to know about the miscarriage. “What do you want to tell me?” Julian asked, becoming curious. Knowing Sydney, she was about to demand money from him. That was all he was to her. He wasn’t seen as her husband, but just a means to get her money. And she always demands a lot of it, spending his money like a spoiled brat. “Say what you came here to say first,” Sydney said. Julian nodded. It wasn’t like he was interested in whatever new things Sydney wanted him to buy her so he went straight to the point. “I want us to go our separate ways.” Confused, Sydney arched her brow at Julian. “What are you talking about?” Of course, she wouldn’t like what he had just said. After all, Julian had been the one funding her extravagant lifestyle as she depended on him for everything like a leech. “I want a divorce,” Julian said firmly. He was certain of what he wanted. Julian’s words took Sydney by complete surprise. Julian was the CEO of a very lucrative business in Vergasca. The business had not only gotten him billions, but also taken up most of his time. She had thought the gap that had occurred in their marriage was because he was too busy to spare her his time, but she had been wrong. It was because Julian wanted to divorce her. Julian expected Sydney to go down on her knees and begged him not to divorce her. He was all she had as he knew that she came from a very poor background. Sydney would do everything to keep him. He was certain of that. But she didn’t do as he expected. Instead, she asked coldly. “Are you divorcing me because of her?” That ‘her’ Sydney was referring to was Ashley who claimed to be the daughter of the richest man in Vergasca. “I don’t have to answer that,” Julian threw a folder to the vanity where Sydney was sitting. “Just sign the divorce papers.” Sydney chuckled sadly. Julian must have wanted to get rid of her so badly that he had even drafted the divorce papers before telling her that he wanted a divorce. Sydney smiled bitterly. “So you want to divorce me because of Ashley.” “Is that not enough reason to divorce you?” Julian asked, looking impatient. “You can’t deny it, Sydney. Ashley is far better than you in everything! She got me to where I am right now while you on the other hand are nothing but a parasite! All you did was take and take and take everything from me! If there was anyone I should had married, it should have been Ashley, not a cheap whore like you!” “Is that all you think of me?” Sydney asked, completely shocked. She had loved Julian with all her heart, left everything behind just to be with him and all he thought of her was that she was a parasite?! Sydney frowned. How couldn’t she see this coming? Just yesterday she had watched her husband dedicating all his achievements to Ashley right in her presence during that event and now, he stood in her bedroom, harshly comparing her to Ashley and regarding her as a parasite. Sydney bit her lips. If only he knew that the person who actually got him that far was Sydney herself. All that mere wealth which he was flaunting in her face was all because of Sydney. She made him rich and now he only thought of her as only a parasite. It was amusing to Sydney. Never in her life would she thought someone could be bold enough to call her a parasite right in her face She brought out a pen from the drawers of her vanity and opened the divorce papers. “Okay then. If you really want us to separate, then I will sign it. But just know one thing, Julian. You are going to regret losing me,” Sydney said firmly. Sydney was a nobody. Why will he regret losing her? “You must really think you are worth being called my wife.” Julian mocked her, his voice laced with disgust. “All you did was spend my money like a spoiled brat! It is obvious I’m way out of your league, Sydney. So stop wasting my time and sign the divorce papers!” With a heavy heart, Sydney signed the papers and flung it at Julian. “Pick it up and get out,” without looking at him, she said. “Also, don’t worry about me staying here, I will be leaving in the morning.” As Julian turned his back on her, walking out of her bedroom, a lone tear dropped down Sydney’s eyes. Just in one day, she had lost both her baby and her husband.Stella nodded, not looking like she was ready to accept her apology. She waved her hand, dismissing Maya. “Go and find his nanny.”Sydney watched with sadness as Maya rushed out of the dining room with her crying son. If only her own child had survived, she would have made sure she was always there to comfort him without needing a nanny. Her younger brother, not paying attention to his son who was crying, turned to Sydney, still shocked that she had offered to carry his son. He knew how much Sydney hated having kids around. “Wow, sis. Being a poor man’s wife has really changed you a lot,” he said and covered his mouth, trying to stop himself from laughing. “Don’t tell me that your good for nothing husband made you take care of other’s kids.”Her brother had alway be insensitive so she didn’t pay attention to his taunt and said. “Ex husband. We are divorced.”Hearing that her father looked up, but still didn’t say anything to her. Her mother was pleased that her daughter had finally
After driving for an hour, the car parked in front of a magnificent mansion. The staff working at the mansion had already filed out to welcome Sydney. It had been five years since she had been home so her mother ensured she felt welcomed on her arrival. The man who had come to pick her got down from the car and went to open the back door for Sydney. He was her father's personal chauffeur. Seeing that her father had sent his personal chauffeur to pick her up, Sydney felt her father must have missed her too and might have forgiven her for what she had done. Sydney got down from the car. Although it had been years since she left, the mansion looked the same and felt like home. The head of the staff stepped forward and bowed in courtesy. “Welcome home Miss Steinfeld.” After greeting Sydney, she started directing the staff on what to do. Some of the staff came to meet her and helped in removing her jacket and another collected her purse and placed it on a tray. Others went to the boo
“Save your breath, Ashley. I have no use of such a mere amount of money,” Sydney said to Ashley before looking back at Julian. “Make good use of the little money you have left. Trust me, you will need it in the future,” Sydney said to Julian and walked out. Still shocked that Sydney had rejected his money, Julian watched her in shock as she walked away from him. What surprised him was that someone like Sydney was calling a whooping fifty million dollars a mere amount of money and even had the audacity to tell him to save it for future use. Given what he had heard about Sydney, Julian didn’t want to give her alimony in the first place, but he had thought better of it. Sydney was a gold digger. He knew she would do anything to get money from him after he divorced her and might even slander him for not giving her alimony. That was why Julian decided to give her the alimony. Who would have thought Sydney wouldn’t be satisfied with such a huge amount of money. “I know you are rejecting t
Early in the morning, Sydney had gotten up and began to arrange all her belongings in several suitcases. As she zipped up the suitcase, she took one last look at her bedroom and sighed. Lot of memories were made in the same bedroom with Julia. It used to be theirs before Julian moved out. She would miss living in the same place with Julian, but as much as it would hurt her it was high time to move on. There was no point in holding on to Julian when he no longer wanted her. The workers were sad when they found out about the separation. They knew how much they used to be in love with each other. It was sad to see their relationship come to an end. But despite how sad they were, they couldn’t express it around Sydney because she wasn't one who liked people acting vulnerable around her. Even when she was at her lowest point, she still appeared aloof and unbothered. They were carrying her luggage outside according to Sydney's order when Ashley walked into the general living room of the m
