The slip of cream paper burned against Isabella’s palm like a branding iron.

Nathan was still watching her, his storm-grey eyes filled with concern as the boardroom emptied around them. The quiet hum of the executive floor felt oppressive, a far cry from the victory she had just scored against Julian minutes prior.

"Isabella?" Nathan took a step closer, his voice dropping into that deep, resonant tone that usually brought her a sense of calm. "Are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Isabella slid her fingers into the pocket of her tailored blazer, concealing Vance’s note before Nathan could catch a glimpse of the heavy embossed print. She forced her facial muscles to remain still, masking the sudden spike of adrenaline threatening to unmoor her.

"I’m fine," she said smoothly, though the word felt dry in her throat. "Just processing the adrenaline. Marcus Vance was... surprisingly eager to support us."

Nathan’s eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle flicker of skepticism passing over his features. "Vance doesn't support anyone unless it serves his bottom line. He wanted Julian brought down a peg because Julian’s real estate venture threatened Vance’s own logistics holdings in Cook County. Don't trust him, Isabella."

Don't trust him.

The irony weighed heavily in the air.

"I don't trust anyone in this building, Nathan," Isabella said, looking him squarely in the eye. "Not Vance. Not Victoria. Not even the legal counsel who conveniently had a silver flash drive ready to blow up a board meeting."

Nathan flinched slightly, though he quickly masked it behind his professional posture. He leaned back against the edge of the rosewood conference table, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Is that what this is?" he asked quietly, his voice carrying a razor-thin edge of disappointment. "You think I used you as a weapon for my own political agenda?"

"Did you?" Isabella countered, stepping into his space. "You've been playing a long game inside Hayes Global long before I walked through those front doors. You gave me that document because you knew I’d take the bullet if the board reacted poorly."

Nathan stared down at her, his expression hardening into something unreadable. For a long moment, the only sound between them was the quiet hum of the air purification system.

"If I wanted to protect myself, Isabella, I would have handed that file to Vance six months ago and stayed far away from you," Nathan said, his voice dangerously low. "I gave it to you because you’re the only person in this entire cursed skyscraper who actually gives a damn about the human cost of what this company does. I gave it to you because I trusted you."

The sincerity in his voice hit her like a physical blow. But the paper in her pocket seemed to heavy to ignore.

Before she could speak, her phone buzzed again—not a news notification this time, but a private, encrypted text message from an unknown number:

[UNKNOWN]: Look at the wire routing on Vance's note. Ask Cole about the escrow account opened in October 2022.

Isabella’s breath hitched. Whoever sent the text knew Vance had handed her the paper. She was being watched inside the building—or Vance was already playing a secondary move against Nathan through her.

Without waiting for Nathan to ask, Isabella pulled the folded cream paper from her pocket and opened it beneath the soft recessed lighting of the boardroom.

Typed cleanly in dark ink was a bank transaction receipt dated four years ago. It detailed a wire transfer of $250,000 made directly to St. Jude Memorial Hospital’s oncology department—the exact facility where her mother, Elena Reed, had spent her final months.

The primary donor name was redacted. But the originating account line was fully visible:

Cole & Associates Escrow Account #4092-B.

Isabella felt the floor beneath her feet tilt.

"Isabella, what is that?" Nathan asked, noticing the pale drain of color from her face. He stepped around the table, reaching out to take the paper.

She didn't pull away this time. She let him take it.

Nathan’s eyes scanned the printout. For the first time since she had met him, the immaculate, unflappable Senior Managing Counsel lost his composure. His jaw tightened, his breathing shallowing as he stared at his family firm's name on the paper.

"Where did you get this?" Nathan demanded, his head snapping up.

"Vance handed it to me," Isabella whispered, her hazel eyes searching his face for any sign of deceit. "My mother’s medical bills were paid anonymously four years ago. I spent years thinking it was a charitable grant from the hospital foundation. But it was your family’s law firm, Nathan. It was you."

"Isabella, listen to me—"

"Why?" she snapped, her voice breaking through her rigid composure. "My mother died thinking she was a burden to the world! She suffered in silence because she didn't want to accept charity! Was Richard paying you to clean up his mess? Were you his bagman before you became his corporate attorney?"

"No!" Nathan shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom.

He took a sharp breath, running a hand through his dark hair, visibly fighting to regain control of his emotion. He closed the remaining distance between them, standing so close she could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest.

"Richard didn't authorize that payment," Nathan said, his voice raw with suppressed emotion. "Richard didn't even know about it."

Isabella stared at him, stunned. "What?"

"Four years ago, I was still an associate at my father’s firm," Nathan explained, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying honesty. "Richard came to my father in secret. He was terrified of Victoria finding out he had a daughter. He wanted to set up a trust fund for you, but he was too much of a coward to put his own name on it. He wanted us to pay off your mother's care using offshore accounts."

"And you took his money?"

"No," Nathan said fiercely. "I refused the assignment. I told Richard that if he wanted to help the woman whose life he broke, he had to look her in the eye and do it himself. He refused. He walked out of our offices and left Elena to suffer."

Isabella felt a lump form in her throat. "Then how did this transfer happen?"

Nathan’s gaze softened, a look of profound, agonizing regret washing over his face.

"I went to St. Jude’s myself," Nathan confessed softly. "I saw your mother through the glass room in the ICU. I saw you sitting by her bed, twenty-two years old, studying for your journalism exams by the light of a heart monitor while trying to figure out how to pay for her chemotherapy."

Isabella’s breath caught in her throat.

"I couldn't stand by and let Richard’s cowardice destroy two innocent lives," Nathan continued, his voice barely a whisper now. He reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently brushing against her jawline, grounding her. "I used my own private trust account—the one my grandfather left me—and routed it through my family’s escrow to cover her treatment. Richard never knew. Victoria never knew. It wasn't corporate money, Isabella. It was mine."

The realization hit Isabella with the weight of an avalanche.

For four years, she had believed she was entirely alone in the world, fighting against an indifferent system. But Nathan had been there in the shadows, quietly protecting her family long before she ever knew his name.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice trembling. "When I walked into this building three days ago... why didn't you say anything?"

"Because I knew who you were the second I saw your resume on Richard’s desk," Nathan said gently. "And I knew that if you thought I gave you a dime out of pity, you would turn around, walk out that door, and never let me help you again."

Isabella’s heart hammered against her ribs. The anger that had fueled her for the last hour evaporated, replaced by a deep, overwhelming wave of emotion that left her utterly defenseless against the intensity of his gaze.

"Nathan..." she began.

Before she could finish, the heavy glass doors of Boardroom B clicked open.

Three uniformed Hayes Global corporate security officers marched into the room, led by Mr. Henderson—Isabella’s managing editor from The Daily Chronicle.

"There she is," Henderson said, pointing a trembling finger at Isabella. His face was flushed with anxiety. "Miss Reed, step away from the console immediately."

Nathan instantly shifted his body, stepping smoothly between Isabella and the security guards. "What is the meaning of this, Henderson? This is a private executive wing."

"I have an emergency injunction issued by the Cook County Superior Court," Henderson declared, pulling a stamped legal document from his leather portfolio. "Along with a formal complaint filed by Mrs. Victoria Hayes. Miss Reed is under active federal investigation for the theft of proprietary corporate data and illegal wiretapping during her tenure at the newspaper."

Isabella’s eyes widened. "Wiretapping? That’s a lie!"

"The court doesn't think so," the lead security officer said, stepping forward with pair of heavy steel handcuffs hanging from his belt. "Miss Reed, you are to hand over your personal phone, your corporate badge, and all digital storage devices in your possession. You are being escorted off the premises immediately."

Nathan’s grey eyes turned to liquid ice. He took a half-step forward, his tall frame looming over the lead officer. "Touch her, and I will have your security license revoked before you reach the lobby. Under corporate charter 12-A, an executive appointee cannot be detained on company property without a full review by the managing board."

"The managing board isn't in charge anymore, Counselor," a smooth, triumphant voice echoed from the doorway.

Victoria Hayes walked into the room, flanked by two corporate attorneys in tailored gray suits. She held a gold-embossed leather folder under her arm, a sinister, absolute victory shining in her icy blue eyes.

"As of five minutes ago, Richard's medical proxy was officially transferred to me due to his total incapacitation," Victoria announced, her voice echoing with deadly precision. "I hold seventy percent of the voting shares. The board review is waived."

She looked past Nathan, her cruel smile settling directly onto Isabella.

"Your little crusade is over, Isabella," Victoria whispered. "Hand over the flash drive, or you leave this building in handcuffs.”

The heavy steel doors of the Cook County Central Detention Bureau unlocked with a deep, echoing clank.Nathan Cole stepped out into the crisp mid-morning Chicago air, rolling his shoulders to work out the stiffness left by four hours in a holding cell. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket—just his charcoal vest, white dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and his dark tie loosened at the collar.Parked at the curb, idling silently in the yellow light, was a matte-black executive Maybach. The rear door opened. Isabella stepped out onto the pavement. She had shed her formal executive blazer, wearing a simple cream silk blouse and black tailored trousers, her dark hair now falling loosely over her shoulders. She looked exhausted, her hazel eyes framed by faint shadows, but the fierce, unshakeable poise that had broken Marcus Vance on international television remained entirely intact.Nathan walked up to her, stopping just inches away. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The roar of down

The heavy brass doors of the executive elevator closed behind the police officers and Nathan, leaving the seventieth floor drowning in a suffocating silence.Marcus Vance picked up his white coffee cup from the desk, took a slow, deliberate sip, and set it back down. He adjusted his silk tie in the reflection of the dark glass windows, radiating the smug, absolute confidence of a man who believed he had just delivered checkmate."You have two hours until the opening bell, Isabella," Vance said smoothly, walking toward the private foyer. "I suggest you use them to prepare your statement for the press conference. I'll have the corporate legal team draft my Vice Chairman confirmation papers. We can sign them right after we address the media."Isabella didn't answer. She stood behind the rosewood table, her chin high, her hazel eyes tracking him with cold, unyielding precision until the elevator doors slid shut, carrying him away. The moment she was alone, Isabella moved. She sprinted acr

"He didn't just vote with us in the boardroom to push Victoria out. He’s been orchestrating Richard’s isolation from the inside."Nathan stood beside her, his jaw set in a tight line as his fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the secondary corporate registries for Vance Medical Logistics."Vance didn't want Julian running Hayes Global because Julian is an incompetent hothead," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "And he didn't want Victoria in charge because she’s too sharp to share power. He wanted you, Isabella. He voted to hand you controlling interest because he assumed a twenty-six-year-old investigative journalist would be overwhelmed, malleable, and completely reliant on a senior board veteran to run the company.""He

The sound of fine crystal shattering against rosewood echoed through the dead silence of the seventieth-floor boardroom.Champagne pooled across the dark wood, reflecting the sharp white lights of the high-definition display screens. Julian stood frozen behind the podium, his mouth slightly open, his hand still suspended in mid-air where his glass had been a heartbeat prior.Beside him, Victoria didn't drop her glass. Her hand tightened around the stem with such violent force that her knuckles turned translucent. The soft, sorrowful widow’s mask she had worn for the television cameras dissolved, replaced by a dark, terrifying stillness."Security," Julian finally choked out, his voice cracking before deepening into a panicked rage. "Security! Get this trespassing fake out of my room! Lock the floor!"Two heavy oak doors at the rear of the boardroom opened, and four armed corporate security guards stepped forward."Stand down," Nathan’s voice rang out.It wasn't a shout. The roar of the rain outside seemed to deaden, replaced by the hollow, metallic ringing in Isabella’s ears.Richard was dead. She had spent her entire life resenting him, holding his ghost accountable for her mother’s solitary struggles in West Chicago. But now, staring at the television screen where Victoria was putting on a performance of tearful widowhood, a sudden, sharp ache blossomed in Isabella’s chest. He had tried. In his last moments, trapped in a sterile cage, he had fought through his failing breath to place the crown in her hands."Isabella."Nathan’s hands were on her shoulders, turning her gently away from the screen. His thumb brushed over her cheek, wiping away a stray raindrop mixed with a tear she hadn't realized she’d shed. The static on the phone screen sizzled against the cold Chicago rain before the display went completely black. Isabella stood frozen on the sidewalk of North Wacker Drive, the freezing water soaking through her blazer, her thumb still pressing against the lifeless glass of her phone. Poisoning him. The words echoed inside her head like a siren. Richard wasn't just fading away in a private clinic—Victoria was actively extinguishing him, using synthetic beta-blockers to mimic a terminal stroke and secure her total proxy vote. "Isabella." Nathan’s voice was close, sharp and clear against the roar of downtown traffic. He took her arm, his grip firm and steady, pulling her out of the open downpour and under the concrete overhang of a nearby office building. "Did you hear him?" Isabella whispered, her hazel eyes wide with shock. "They’re killing him, Nathan. She’s killing her own husband." "I heard," Nathan said, his face carved from dark marble, his grey eyes flashing with absolute
