To California

She woke up to the sound of a vehicle, the old vehicle that annoyingly runs round the island with no motive, only to reach a certain destination; the other end of the island, and back again to the start. The vehicle’s sound came on again. She hissed and threw the blanket off, away from her cold body.

What a soothing alarm on a Sunday morning!

Sloane West peeped through the window, attacked by the ray of sunlight that hit her socket. 'Darn it!'. She walked back to the bed and sat on it’s edge, staring at a picture frame on the drawer. It was a picture of a little girl and a man, a beautiful one to be precise.

Then the locket round her neck caught her sight, she wasn’t smiling nor frowning, she just scoffed and walked to the bathroom, grabbed a toothpaste and brush, did the job, took a quick bath and walked to the dressing table.

Her reflection was an obviously attractive one. A pretty young woman in her early 20s, with a nicely shaped facial appearance; black brows, long lashes which were also black, curly pink lips, black hair and eyes filled with rage.

Talk less of her nice curves and edges, she was endowed with strength and might.

The brush on the table went up as Sloane held it through her hair, combing every tangled strand. She let it rest on her shoulders then walked to the closet, took out a nice black Jean and top and a pair of glasses with a fancy laced sneakers.

Slipping them on after applying some lotion to her skin was pretty easy task. She walked to the other end of the closet and dragged a stuck travel box out of the tight space. The closet was emptied into the box.

Sloane walked to the picture frame on the drawer and held it high, “I love you Papa, it’s all for you,” then put it into the box, alongside her other stuffs on the dressing table. The room was lively no more, it was totally empty.

She was moving out.

Sloane grabbed the sneakers and the travel box and walked out of the room.

Out in the living room, two ladies and men sat on the sofas, on sighting her, they got to their feet. The ladies held on to their boxes.

“Here you are Sloane” - the red head lady smiled- “at last you agreed to do the right thing.”

“You won’t tell me what’s right and wrong,” Sloane said and walked away, out of the house.

The vehicle was waiting for its passengers. The two couples had also walked out of the house, exchanging words.

Sloane glanced at the driver. He was in an ash shirt with a formal badge pinned to it. As the island's driver or what? Sloane pushed the boxes into the booth and called out to the ladies.

“Will you stay there and keep on crying goodbye or we move and go get rich.”

“I think this is a goodbye,” the second lady said.

“Mary don’t get too emotional,” Phoebe cautioned, turning to Sloane, “I know how bad you feel but trust me this is the right thing.”

“Thanks Phoebs."

They all got into the car, while Phoebe and Mary were waving their boyfriends goodbye, Sloane looked out of the window and smiled, finally she had to wish Rhode Island goodbye.

The vehicle made a rough sound as the driver started the engine. “Carburetor checked,” he said to himself and put on the radio.

“I'm Jane James and this is the Rhode Island news at ten,” the reporter started. “Yesterday at exactly three in the morning, a thief was caught in its victims home, eye witnesses had said, 'he was trying to get out when the victims dog caught him by the ankle…'”

“I think that’s Jake’s men,” Sloane whispered, “the asshole is in a lot of trouble.”

“He shouldn’t mess with us, now that one of his men is caught, he have got no where to hide.

“What did you say lady?,” the driver asked curiously.

“Nothing Old man, mind your business.”

The reporter was still on air, “the man had confessed that his boss, the personal assistant to Mrs. Smith, the governor’s wife, Jake Mason had given the orders to go steal from the Mayor sent to them…

“Oops!”

“And he had done just that. Investigations are still carried out, we’ll get to you immediately after this break.”

The driver took a swerve into another bushy lane, the leaves clapped the windscreen as he increased the speed, when he got to the shores he put on the brakes. “Here you are ladies.”

The shore was a very lively zone, Islanders were at a certain area taking care of their speed boats and ships. There was a massive ship at one end with an ‘Opened' sign on it. That would be the ship they would be taking.

A man sat on the wood were passengers should follow. He held a cigarette in hand, he was staring at a woman in a lecherous manner. The woman was dressed half naked, her cleavage was seen from the start as the dress could cover only half her breasts. She wore a Caribbean skirt and was as beautiful as the sky itself.

When the ladies got down with their luggage, the driver asked for his pay, “Coins?”

Sloane dipped her hand in her pocket and brought out five notes, “have this.” She watched the man collect the money and zoom off.

They walked to the wooden step and asked the man to leave the way. He was so adamant not to. Sloane chuckled as she held him by the neck collar, squeezing every last breathe out of him.

“Careful girl!” Phoebe warned, releasing the man off her partner's grip. “Leave you fool.”

The man nodded and ran away, catching his breath.

“You have to be more careful Sloane.”

“Fine.”

The captain alerted the passengers that the ship would leave in five minutes time and everyone should bring in their boxes.

Sloane looked back at the bushes and lanes and smiled, “it’s been nice operating here, maybe, one day I’ll be back to kick Jack in the ass, again." She walked into the ship with her luggage, their destination, California.
