Chapter 6

Singapore – Two Days Later

Elaine was stirring instant coffee in a chipped white mug when her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Saglit siyang natigilan.

“Hello?”

“Ms. Flores? This is Daniel Lim from Crestline Capital.”

Biglang bumilis ang tibok ng puso niya.

“Yes, sir.”

“We reviewed your interview. You lack direct execution experience.”

“I understand.”

“However,” he continued, “we’re giving you a test. Forty-eight hours. If you pass, we proceed. If you fail, we won’t move forward.”

Diretso. Walang paligoy-ligoy.

“I accept,” she said.

Pagkababa ng tawag, pumasok agad ang email.

She opened it.

Twenty-seven pages.

Charts.

Currency projections.

Risk models.

Market volatility scenarios.

Napaupo siya.

“Grabe,” bulong niya.

This wasn’t beginner work.

This was pressure.

That Night

Maliit ang desk niya. Halos matabunan ng printed papers.

May kape sa kaliwa.

Highlighter sa kanan.

Calculator sa gitna.

Alas dos na ng madaling araw.

Pagod na pagod siya.

Saglit niyang ipinikit ang mata niya.

Kung nasa dati pa siyang buhay—

Nasa malaking kama na siya ngayon.

Tahimik.

Komportable.

May mali.

Too conservative ang hedge positioning.

Kung tumaas ang volatility, malulunod sila.

She recalculated.

Binura.

Inulit.

Nag-compute ulit.

Walang personal statement.

Pure analysis.

Back Home – Same Night

Aron sat alone in his study.

Tahimik ang bahay.

Masyadong tahimik.

He opened social media.

Camille had posted.

“New beginnings.”

May picture silang dalawa.

Smiling.

Polished.

Perfect.

Dapat okay siya.

Ito ang pinili niya.

Pero bakit parang may kulang?

Tinawagan niya si Mia.

“Did she… say anything before leaving?”

“Wala po, sir,” sagot ni Mia. “Isang maleta lang ang dala niya.”

Isang maleta.

Five years.

Isang maleta.

Typed:

Elaine Flores.

Search.

Lumabas ang record.

Manila to Singapore.

One-way.

Parang may bumigat sa dibdib niya.

Hindi siya pumunta sa kamag-anak.

Hindi siya naghintay.

Hindi siya nagbanta.

Umalis siya.

Tahimik.

Totoo.

“She really left,” he murmured.

Singapore – 48 Hours Later

Elaine stood in front of Mr. Lim again.

Pagod ang katawan niya.

Pero steady ang mata.

He flipped through her report.

Walang expression.

Minutes passed.

Parang ang haba ng bawat segundo.

“You didn’t follow the conservative model,” he said.

“No, sir.”

“Why?”

“Because it protects image, not liquidity.”

Tahimik ulit.

Tinitigan siya ni Mr. Lim.

“If volatility doesn’t spike, you’ll look aggressive.”

“Yes.”

“And if it does?”

“We survive.”

Mahabang pause.

Isinara niya ang folder.

“You start Monday.”

Hindi agad nag-sink in.

Then—

“Thank you, sir.”

“Okay,” bulong niya. “Kaya ko pala.”

Instinctively, kinuha niya ang phone niya.

Walang message.

Walang missed call.

Hindi siya nag-check ng profile.

Hindi na niya kailangan.

Across the ocean—

Aron stared at the Singapore flight record again.

Singapore.

Malayong-malayo.

Ngayon niya naramdaman ang totoong distance.

Hindi lang physical.

Permanent.

At gabing iyon—

Hindi siya makatulog nang maayos.

For the first time—

Siya ang hindi mapakali.

We position above it.”Executives twice her age listened. Not because she was loud.Because she was right. After the meeting, one board member approached her.“You negotiate like someone who’s lost something significant.”She gave a small, private smile.“I have.”“Do you miss it?”She paused.“Hindi ko nami-miss yung sakit,” she answered quietly. “Pero minsan… nami-miss ko yung version ko na marunong pang maghintay.”But she no longer waited. She built.⸻Meanwhile – PhilippinesAron Salazar had changed. Not publicly dramatic.Subtly.Board decisions became less aggressive.Partnerships became more collaborative.Emplo

Negotiations had ended an hour ago, but neither of them had left.Elaine was packing her laptop when Aron spoke.“You don’t look at me the same way anymore.”She paused. Not startled.Just still.“I don’t look at you the same way I used to,” she replied calmly. He exhaled slowly.“When we got married… I told myself it was obligation.”She didn’t interrupt.“I thought I was being honest. I thought I was doing the right thing by not pretending.”A quiet, bitter smile touched her lips.“You weren’t pretending,” she said softly. “You just didn’t choose me.”Silence filled the space between them.“I didn’t understand you,” he continued. “I thought you were passive. Content. I didn’t realize you were adjusting to survive.”Her throat tightened slightly — but she kept steady.“You never asked.”That one hurt.He stepped closer.“I regret how I handled it.”She met his eyes.“You regret le

But it will require close coordination.”“How close?”“Direct reporting between you and Salazar.”No buffer. No middle executive.Just them.Elaine’s heartbeat shifted — but her face didn’t.“I can do it,” she said.Mr. Lim nodded once.“And one mor
