Chapter 1

The pungent smell of disinfectant filled my nostrils.

I opened my eyes.

Bang!

The ward door was kicked open.

My dad Gary stormed in and pointed at my bed as he shouted.

"Jessica! Today was Jason's big day, and you had to run to the rooftop and jump?

"All our relatives saw it! Now everyone's saying we've raised a lunatic!"

My mom Marielle followed behind him and tossed a plastic bag onto the nightstand.

Two cold buns rolled out and landed on the tabletop.

"Jessica, please. If you wanted to throw a tantrum, couldn't you have at least picked another day?

"Jason worked so hard just to get into vocational school. Why did you have to ruin the moment for him?

"Right after you jumped, several tables of guests left without even touching their food. They didn't even leave any gift money!"

I turned to look at them.

An intense pain shot through my wrist. Fresh blood had already seeped through the newly changed bandage.

Neither of them even glanced at it.

"I wasn't throwing a tantrum."

I opened my mouth and tasted blood immediately.

"The doctor said I'm sick. I have severe depression.

"I can't stop myself from wanting to–"

Gary waved his hand dismissively and cut me off.

"Depression? That's nonsense! You just read too many books and became overly sensitive!

"Jason jokingly said that you should help him buy a house in the future. He was kidding! Was that really worth trying to kill yourself over?

"Kids these days call everything depression. You've got too much free time!"

Marielle pulled over a chair and sat down. She chimed in.

"We fed you, clothed you, and paid for you to get into Crownstone College. What else could you possibly be unhappy about?

"Jason isn't very bright. He'll have to work in manual labor for the rest of his life. So what if we favor him a little more?

"You're his older sister. Can't you just give in to him? Do you have to tear this family apart to be happy?"

'Give in.'

Those two words had weighed me down for fifteen years.

I turned onto my side. I was too exhausted to keep talking.

"You should both leave. I want to be alone."

Gaey sneered and kicked the bed frame.

"Fine. Stay here then!

"Figure out how you'll pay your own medical bills. We just paid Jason's vocational school sponsorship fee. We don't have money to waste on your nonsense!

"Get discharged tomorrow and stop wasting money on a hospital bed!"

The door slammed shut.

Curled beneath the blanket, I let my tears soak into the sheets.

Under my pillow, my shattered phone began vibrating.

I answered.

A man's hurried breathing came from the other end. He couldn't hide his panic.

"Jess? How are you?

"Don't do anything silly. Your parents are still here!"

Hearing the anxious voices of my young parents, I bit down hard on my lip.

But a sob still escaped.

My young mom snatched the phone. She was crying so hard her voice trembled.

"Sweetheart, why are you crying? Who bullied you?

"Did we fail to protect you? Tell me!"

I pressed the phone tightly against my ear and whispered, "It was you two–"

'Eighteen years ago, you could tell I was hurting from a single sob.'

'Why is it that you can't see the pain I'm in at all now?"

"Do you really want to know?"

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat.

"Do you really want to know how the little girl you once treasured survived these past eighteen years?"

In another parallel timeline, sunlight pierced the morning mist eighteen years ago. It shone into the old but cozy apartment complex.I opened my eyes and realized I was lying in a tiny crib.My young dad leaned over the rail while gently tickling my cheek with his finger. He looked a little pale, but his eyes sparkled with joy."Are you awake, Jess? Look at Daddy!"My young mom walked over with a bowl of pudding. She gently patted Gary's shoulder."Stop teasing her. Let her eat."Looking at their young, vibrant faces, tears welled up in my eyes.I had really come back.I was back in the home that had existed before all the favoritism and indifference began. This time, they kept their promise. When I turned three, our relatives still wouldn't stop talking."You should have a son. Otherwise, nobody will take care of you when you're old. Your daughter will belong to another family sooner or later."My young dad flipped the dining table over on the spot and threw that relati

Without a moment's hesitation, I placed my hand in my young dad's.The space around us began twisting violently.Blinding white light was emitted from our joined hands, forming an enormous vortex."No! Jessica! You can't leave!"My middle-aged mom finally panicked. She stumbled toward me on her hands and knees."I gave birth to you, and you belong to me! If you leave, who's going to pay Jason's tuition? What will happen to this family?"I looked at her without a trace of warmth."The part of me that belonged to you was cut away the moment you forced me to give up the money that was keeping me alive."I hope the three of you stay together forever."The white light swallowed us whole. In the final instant before I disappeared, I saw my middle-aged dad throw himself desperately at me.He crashed hard onto the floor. The only thing he managed to grab was empty air.The private room fell into absolute silence.I was gone.Along with the young couple, we vanished before everyo

"Open your damn eyes and take a good look at this!"It was a handwritten pledge.[I, Gary Jagger, swear that Jessica Jagger will be my only child. I will never have a second child. If I ever break this promise, may lightning strike me dead!]The pledge smacked my middle-aged dad square in the face. His face shifted between pale and flushed. My young dad pointed at Jason, who was cowering in the corner."You seriously expect a worthless brat who, at fifteen, steals his sister's scholarship to support you in your old age?"When Jess was born, your wife nearly bled to death. The doctor said she shouldn't have another child."You swore you'd only ever have Jess! And look what happened?"You became obsessed with having a son. You tricked your wife into drinking all those so-called fertility remedies. You even took Jess' birth chart to quack fortune tellers, hoping to trade away her fate for a son!"My young mom stepped forward and grabbed my middle-aged mom by the hair."And you s

Everyone turned around.Standing in the doorway were a young man and a young woman. The man had on a denim jacket that had been fashionable eighteen years ago. His clothes were soaked with sweat, and his face was pale.He was holding a thick baseball bat tightly. The woman had on a floral dress. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying. Tears streamed down her face, and a trace of blood lingered at the corner of her mouth. They looked no older than their early twenties, yet their faces were identical to what my parents had looked like eighteen years ago.The air froze. My middle-aged dad stared at them in shock."W-Who are you?"My young dad ignored him completely. He ran straight toward me, snatched the fruit knife from my hand, and flung it across the room."Jess, I'm here. I'm sorry for being late."Seeing the blood on my neck and the bandages wrapped around my wrists, his entire body trembled uncontrollably. My young mom ran over and pulled me tightly into her arms be

The next day, I was discharged from the hospital. It was also the day my family held the celebration banquet in honor of Jason's teachers.Marielle forced me into an old T-shirt that had faded from countless washes and dragged me into the hotel's private dining room. The room was packed with relatives who were all chatting and laughing. The moment they saw me, the room fell silent. Then the discussions grew even louder."Oh, look who's here, the college student! Jessica, Crownstone College must've given you a pretty big scholarship, huh?""Jason's born lucky. He's definitely going to be a big boss someday. Jessica, you'll have to look after your little brother."Gary sat at the head of the table and motioned me over. There was a single chair in the center of the room.Jason sat comfortably in it while holding a cup of coffee."Jessica, since all your older relatives are here today, let's establish a few family rules."Gary cleared his throat. He placed a handwritten documen
