Chapter 4

Penulis: Fading Mist
I shifted away in disgust.

Seeing me retreat only riled Rosa up more. "Have you lost your mind?"

Rosa slammed her palm on the table. "Anna. Now that I'm here, this house answers to me. Starting today, you're moving into the basement. The master bedroom goes to Sophia so she can rest during her pregnancy. And from now on, all the cooking, cleaning, laundry, and everything else is your job. If you don't do it right, you get out."

Leo stood to the side, his back straightening again.

"You hear that?"

I looked at the circus in front of me and almost laughed.

"Rosa," I said flatly, calling her by name. "This is my home. Spit on my floor one more time, and I'll make you lick it clean."

The room went dead silent.

Rosa froze for a few seconds, then grabbed the crystal ashtray off the table and hurled it at me. "You little witch. I'll kill you!"

I tilted my head and dodged. The ashtray smashed into the wall, shattering into pieces.

Rosa charged at me and slapped me twice across the face.

"You ungrateful bitch. How dare you talk back to me? I'll teach you a lesson today on behalf of your dead parents!

Sophia clapped her hands from the side, delighted. "That's right, Mom. Hit her. Women like her only learn when they're beaten!"

I was forced to the floor, and I struggled with everything I had. However, I was pinned down so tightly I could barely breathe.

Leo crouched in front of me, grabbed my hair, and forced my head up.

"Anna, don't blame me for being heartless. Sign a share transfer agreement right now. Every share under your name goes to me. Then, sign a property gift deed and transfer this estate to my mother. If you sign, I'll let you go and give you some money to disappear. If you don't..."

His voice dropped.

"You'll rot in the basement for the rest of your life."

I spat out a mouthful of blood and glared at him. "In your dreams."

Leo seemed to remember something. He turned and lifted a necklace from the mantel.

It was my mother's keepsake.

"You always loved this necklace, didn't you? If you don't sign, I'll destroy it."

"No!" I screamed, my voice raw and hoarse.

"Leo, why are you wasting time talking to her?" Sophia urged from the side. "Just throw it into the fireplace already."

Leo tossed the necklace toward the hearth. He lit a sheet of newspaper and moved to throw it in after.

"Leo! Rosa! Sophia!" I roared each name, my throat filled with the taste of blood.

"If you burn it, I swear I'll tear your limbs apart and feed you to the sharks!"

Leo's hand jerked. The newspaper slipped from the edge of the mantel. Flames licked up instantly, catching the necklace.

I used the moment to break free and lunged for the hearth.

I grabbed the necklace with my bare hand.

The fire scorched the back of my hand, but I felt nothing.

I crushed the necklace against my chest and smothered the flames with my body.

Luckily, only a small part of it was blackened.

I collapsed to the floor, curled around what I was protecting. My hair was a mess, my clothes torn, the back of my hand burned black.

Slowly, I lifted my head.

Leo had been about to kick me, but the look in my eyes made him freeze in place.

It was pure, murderous hatred.

"Leo," I said, my voice hoarse but steady. "You just tried to burn my necklace."

Leo stepped back, then pointed a finger at me and yelled, "So what? It's just a dead woman's necklace. If you care so much, sign the papers and get out with that worthless thing!"

A furious shout thundered from the entrance.

"Try touching her again. I dare you!"

The front doors were kicked open.

Seven or eight men in black suits poured in, taking control of the room in seconds.

Then, a middle-aged man in a tailored suit stepped inside.

It was my father, Fritz Orlen, the Don of the Orlen Family.

My father saw me, disheveled and clutching the necklace, and his face darkened. He strode forward, draping his coat over my shoulders.

"Who dared lay a hand on my daughter?"

Several years passed.Leo, a name I had almost completely erased from my memory, was finally clawing his way out of hell. He'd made trouble in prison, behaved horribly, and somehow managed to serve every single day of a ten-year sentence.A month before his release, I decided to visit him on a whim.Through the thick, bulletproof glass, I barely recognized the man on the other side. His hair was streaked with gray, his face a map of ugly scars, and a missing front tooth made his words whistle through the gap. He looked like a living skeleton, his eyes cloudy and vacant. When he saw me looking polished and radiant, almost out of place here, a faint hope flickered in his eyes. However, it quickly faded, replaced by fear and shame. His trembling hand lifted the receiver. The same hand that once gripped my wrist was now mottled with age spots and scars."Anna..." His voice was hoarse. "I-if I had treated you better back then... If only you had told me you were..."Suddenly, he bro

Sophia stared at the gleaming gates of Silktree Atelier. She shrank back, afraid to move forward.Three years in prison had worn her down completely. She was barely in her early thirties, yet her hair was brittle and thinning, her face full of wrinkles. She looked like a woman in her fifties, her back bent, her whole body worn down. When the security guards saw her ragged clothes, they moved to chase her away.I stepped out through the gates.I was dressed in this season's latest couture, a long gown that skimmed the ground, a soft, pale-silver shawl draped over my shoulders."Let her come over," I said, my voice calm and clear.Sophia saw me and shuddered like she'd seen a ghost. She dropped her head at once, too frightened to meet my eyes."Ms. Orlen," she whispered, her voice barely audible."You're looking for me?" I asked, gazing down at her with cool indifference. She hesitated for a heartbeat, then seemed to make up her mind. With a dull thud, she dropped to her knees.

I watched Sophia's retreating back, then picked up my phone."Have someone tail her. Film everything. A good dogfight deserves an audience."That very night, a video landed in my inbox. The location was a filthy, rundown rental in one of the city's slums.Rosa was hiding inside, gnawing on a piece of stale bread. When Sophia burst in, Rosa thought salvation had arrived. She started crying on the spot."Sophia, thank God you're here. Hurry and buy me some meat. I'm starving."Sophia answered with a slap."All you know how to do is eat. That's all you ever think about! You old hag, do you have any idea how badly you dragged me down?"Rosa stared at her in shock, clutching her cheek."H-how dare you hit me?""What of it?" Sophia snapped. She kicked over Rosa's begging bowl. "Return to the countryside and stop embarrassing me here. If I ever see you wandering around this city again, I'll beat you every single time."Rosa had never taken that kind of humiliation. She shrieked an

I immediately called Bruce."Put the word out. Tell them Leo's company is finished, and the money's dried up. Get the drug lords, arms dealers, and anyone else he owes to come collecting. Anyone with scores to settle, now's the time.""Understood."I hung up and looked out the window. Olive leaves littered the ground across the estate.Leo's life in prison was anything but pleasant.I had someone casually let it slip to the cellblock boss that Leo used to be a big shot on the outside. I heard that on his very first day, Leo complained that the cell was too crowded and demanded a private room.He was taught a lesson. Thoroughly. Now his daily job was washing socks for everyone in the cell.Outside, his company collapsed completely.Creditors swarmed in.Red paint was splashed across the company gates, and all its cargo and ships were seized and auctioned off by Interpol. However, the few assets under his name were nowhere near enough to fill the massive hole he had dug. Leo was stunned.Rosa had taken up a broom to hit me, and it now slipped from her hand to the floor.Sophia shrieked and ducked behind the couch."W-who are you people?"My father didn't answer. Instead, he recited Leo's identity with chilling precision."Leo Lovera. Your father died when you were five. Your widowed mother remarried twice, but both marriages ended in divorce. Five years ago, you became an associate of the Orlen Family. Three years ago, you secured the arms deal with the Colombian suppliers and rose to capo. Since then, two million three hundred fifty-one thousand six hundred dollars passed through your accounts."Leo swallowed hard.Since joining the Orlen Family, no one but his mother knew his past in such detail. At last, he was forced to face the terrifying truth forming in his mind. The man standing before him was the Don of the Orlen Family. It was someone Leo had only ever heard about, but never dreamed he could meet in person. He dropped to his knees,
