Joey's POV

I stood there for a long moment, searching for some angle or loophole that let me walk away from this.

But I found none.

He was right. Just like I told Winona, I couldn't let Cassie know. And if he found out, it would hurt him.

For a kid, he was sensitive and smart. He would put two and two together and would blame himself for every night I came back late and every time he saw me looking tired.

I couldn’t let that happen.

"Fine," I said.

The word left my mouth before I finished decidi

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   65 - A Lie I Could Not Take Back.

Joey's POVRoland picked me up that morning and took me straight downtown to some French stylist he clearly already knew. She greeted him with a kiss on each cheek before she even looked at me properly."Roland, darling," she said, hands still on his shoulders. "It has been too long.""School has kept me busy," he said smoothly and then turned to me. "Nicole, this is Joey."Nicole's eyes flicked over me, like a jeweler might size up a stone before deciding what to cut. "Ah! The girlfriend.""The girlfriend," Roland agreed.Oh, so she knew about me."Sit," she told me, gesturing toward a chair in front of a mirror lined with bright bulbs. "We have a lot of work to do.""What kind of work exactly?" I asked."You will see," she said, already reaching for a comb.I didn't argue further. I sat and let her hands move through my hair. Another woman started on my face with brushes and powders I couldn't name, and I stared at my reflection slowly turn into someone else entirely.By the time t

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   64 -

Gabriel's POVI ran another lap across the field, my cleats tearing into the grass, my mind stuck on the same thought it had been replaying for days.Joey had chosen Roland. She had looked me straight in the eye and told me I had no right to interfere in her relationship with him.Roland and I had barely spoken since that night. We passed each other in the hallway, locker room, and during practice. We spoke as little as possible during drills. Only what was required.I avoided the whole situation and focused on whatever minor exercises Dr. Conrad still allowed me to do. I ran harder than necessary until Coach finally pulled me aside."What is eating at you this time?" He asked, hands folded, concern in his eyes."Nothing," I said, gasping for breath. It was the same lie I had been giving everyone lately.I turned to go back onto the field, but Coach grabbed my arm. I guess he wasn't finished."Your grades are failing, Davenport." I stopped, shocked. "Failing?"I'd had no idea.I had

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   63 - What's Happening Friday Night?

Joey's POVI walked to the apartment door, still shaking, Roland's voice replaying in my head. Earlier, I had actually worried about him. I had noticed the bruise under his eye and wondered what had happened between him and his father. A small part of me had even wanted to reach out and check if he was okay. I should never have worried about him.For weeks, I believed Roland didn't know the full truth about what he was doing to me. I thought maybe his cruelty came from not knowing about Gabriel. I thought that if he didn't know about Gabriel, maybe there was still some reason for what he was doing. But he had known everything from the beginning. He knew about Gabriel. Our history. He knew everything, yet he still chose to do this to me. He had spent weeks pretending, smiling through it all, like some game he had already won.It was more than cruel. He knew exactly where Gabriel and I were hurting. He knew what his actions were doing to his best friend and continued anyway.I slowly

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   62 - Roland Is Crazy

Joey's POVI didn't plan to follow them. My feet just moved on their own the second I saw Roland slip out after Gabriel and his father; something in his face was too tight for me to sit still and wait as he told me to.I stayed a few steps behind, careful with every step, and ducked around the side of the house when Roland stopped near the door. He didn't go out right away. He just stood there, hidden by the same shadow I hid in on the other side, and I realized, with a small jolt, that he was listening too.I heard most of it. Jeremiah's voice, calm and cutting. Gabriel's voice, tight and getting tighter. My mother's name said the way people say something they think is beneath them. My own name, and the word stripper, dropped so easily; I had to catch my breath.I pressed my back against the wall and closed my eyes, waiting for it to end. When the door finally slid open again and Gabriel walked back inside, Roland did not follow him in right away either. He stood a moment longer near

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   61 - Gabriel Loses His Temper At His Dad

Gabriel's POV"What are you doing here?" The words came out flat, more of an accusation than a question. I looked past Dad to Roland, waiting for an explanation, but Roland looked just as blindsided as I felt, his mouth opening and closing, but no sound coming out."Gabe, I didn't--" Roland started."Matthew called me," Dad said smoothly, cutting him off before he could finish. "Said he was coming to see Roland. Since both of you are friends, I figured I would come along and see you too.""You should have told me you were coming," I said as soon as he finished, not hiding my annoyance. Dad's mouth curved, but not quite a smile. "If I had, would you have let me?"I did not answer that. We both already knew the answer.I turned and walked toward the back of the house, needing distance more than I needed to stand there and keep looking at him.Roland caught up to me before I got to the hallway."Ryder," he said, which made no sense until I realized he had meant to say something else en

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   60 - Joey Goes Over To Gabriel's Place

Gabriel's POVMy sling finally came off that morning, and my shoulder felt strange without it, lighter but somehow more fragile, like it might slip out of place again if I moved too fast.Apparently, Dr. Conrad increased my off-duty time because he thought I would ruin my arm by disobeying him. But since I hadn't, he told me the real time. In two more weeks, I'll be cleared for football drills, and in another I'll be able to play.I couldn't wait.I stood in the kitchen testing my arm by rolling it slowly in small circles. Then I reached for a knife on the counter, determined to cook something myself for the first time in days.I got as far as lining up an onion on the cutting board before Ryder walked in and snatched the knife out of my hand."Absolutely not," he said."My arms are stronger," I said. "The doctor cleared me this morning.""The doctor cleared you for walking around in a sling, not knife work." He set the knife down on the far side of the counter, out of my reach. "Sit
