Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Quinn Loves Cilantro
Like she was staring at a madman.

"Cody, are you all right?" Jasmine asked.

She was the one I'd thrown the herbs at, yet I was the one who felt like crying.

"Where's our son's present?" I asked.

A flash of irritation crossed her face. She turned, shrugging off her coat, and headed for the bedroom.

"What's the rush? I'll buy it."

I'd heard some version of that sentence a thousand times over the past few years. Wait a little longer. What's the hurry? Don't push me.

But I was done waiting. I pushed open our son's bedroom door, pulled back his blanket, and looked into his tear-filled eyes.

"If Mom and Dad got divorced, who would you want to live with?"

He froze. Divorce wasn't a word he understood yet. But it didn't take him long to catch the meaning, and fear crept into his voice without him meaning to let it show.

"Dad, please don't leave me."

Silly boy. As if I'd ever leave him.

I pulled his small body into my arms. "If you went with your mom," I said, the words scraping my throat, "maybe things would be better for you."

His eyes drifted to the photo of the toy. His voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Can we wait just a little longer? One more week."

I understood. He was still holding out hope that his mother would keep a promise, just once. So I told him yes.

The next morning, after I dropped him off at school, I went to work like always. I was a part-timer at a diner, the food was good, but the pay was terrible.

I used to be a top student, actually. My very first job out of college had come with a solid salary. But after Jasmine had our son, she didn't want anything to do with raising him, so I'd voluntarily stepped away from my career for four years to raise him myself. By the time I tried to go back, the world had moved on faster than I'd ever imagined. On top of that, I was an orphan with no family to fall back on, which was how we'd ended up living the way we did.

"Cody, table six needs you."

The memory let go of me, and I answered and walked over. The next second, I found myself staring straight at Jasmine, seated at that very table.

Her expression soured for a fraction of a second, because sitting beside her was Josh Duncan, her childhood sweetheart, the first love she'd never gotten over.

He was handsome, refined, carrying himself with the easy confidence of a settled, mature husband. Next to him, at the same age, I looked worn down and gloomy, permanent shadows under my eyes.

But I didn't feel sad at all. If anything, I was thrilled, because sitting right there beside her was the toy our son had wanted for so long.

Josh looked over the menu and ordered a few dishes. I wrote everything down and was about to turn away when Jasmine suddenly called out to stop me.

She looked at Josh, her voice tinged with helplessness. "Didn't you say you have a cold? You can't eat anything spicy."

Josh gave a rueful little laugh.

"She's always been like this, fussing over every little thing," he said to me. It was framed as a complaint, but the warmth underneath it was unmistakable.

My grip tightened on the menu. It felt like a slap across the face.

Josh noticed something was off with my expression and asked after me with the concerned warmth of a close friend. I turned away in a panic, because I'd caught the pity in his eyes. He knew exactly who I was.

My feet went unsteady beneath me, and lost in my own head, I plowed straight into a coworker carrying a tray of food. A second later, the whole plate went flying, spilling all over me.

Before I could even react, my boss tore into me.

"Cody, if it weren't for that kid of yours, I'd have kicked you out the door a long time ago!"

Jasmine shot to her feet, brow furrowed, and started toward me. But the next second, Josh doubled over, clutching his stomach and crying out in pain. Jasmine stopped short and rushed to his side instead, helping him toward the door, her face etched with worry.

Josh leaned into her, holding her arm close, and looked past her shoulder to meet my eyes with a calm, level stare.

I lost that silent war completely.

My coworkers all knew my boss had a thing for me, and that she'd been taking it out on me because I kept turning her down, so they shot me sympathetic looks. But I couldn't bring myself to care about any of it. I finished out the rest of my shift in a daze and went home that evening still covered in someone else's dinner.

Jasmine didn't answer. Instead, she grabbed my hand and forced it against her own face, hitting herself with it, confessing as she went."It's my fault. I'm the one who made you and our son suffer."It's my fault. I never once kept my promise to our son."It's my fault. I didn't stand up for you when you were being harassed."Just hit me. Why won't you hit me?"By the end, she'd broken down into sobs.I listened to her confession calmly, feeling nothing at all. All the tears our son and I had cried, and she thought a few tears of her own could wipe that away? Hitting her would only make me look pathetic.Charlie noticed something was wrong from where he stood nearby. He dropped his skateboard and ran straight over, shoving Jasmine back hard and planting himself between us like a fierce little tiger guarding its den."Who are you? Leave my dad alone," he started, before Jasmine lifted her head and cut him off without a word. The second he saw her face, his eyes went red. His an

Josh assumed Jasmine still loved him and let out a satisfied laugh. But the next second, she shoved him hard. Caught off guard, Josh dropped straight onto the floor, his ankle twisting into an ugly angle. He cried out in pain."Jasmine, what are you doing?"His face had gone pale.Jasmine's brow furrowed tight. "What are you doing at my house?"Now that she'd finally worked out where things really stood between them, she didn't want to look at him for another second.Josh clearly sensed the shift in her. Panic crept in, and he blurted out the thing that had been eating at him."Is Cody upset with me? I didn't mean to run him off. Isn't it enough that I apologized?"Jasmine's hand froze on the door. She turned slowly, and the look on her face was terrifying."When did you run him off?"Guilt flashed across Josh's face. He stammered through the answer."That day, at Luke's birthday party, he showed up... I was worried he'd cause a scene, so I asked him to leave first.""Asked

Something inside Jasmine's head gave a violent snap, like a wire tearing loose. The background noise around her blurred into static. She kicked off her heels and closed the distance to the heavyset woman in a few quick strides, grabbing her by the hair and slapping her hard across the face.Blood poured from the woman's nose. She lay beneath Jasmine, sobbing and begging for mercy, but Jasmine didn't hear a word of it. She grabbed a serving tray off the nearby counter and brought it down on the woman's head, again and again, until she couldn't make another sound.Jasmine spat at her, turned, and went home.A delivery driver was standing at her door. Before he could say a word, the sight of her sent him stumbling back a few steps. Her white blouse was soaked in blood, her expression wild, radiating a warning that told anyone within reach to keep their distance. He set the package down on the ground once he'd put some distance between them."Your delivery. Nobody answered the phone,

Jasmine's hands started shaking as she called Cody on the way home."The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable."Maybe he was still too angry to pick up, Jasmine told herself, over and over. She'd go home and apologize properly. Cody had always had such an even temper, always so patient with her, right up to the edge of indulging her every whim. Was that exactly why she'd felt entitled to keep hurting him, again and again? No. She shuddered. But no matter how much she tried to deny it, she knew the truth. She'd been hurting Cody this whole time. Not with violence, not even with words, but through her actions, her attitude, slowly stewing him, slowly burning him down.By the time she'd fully faced what she'd done over the past several years, the back of her shirt was soaked through with sweat. She'd always thought of herself as refined, cultured. And yet, her character had been this ugly the whole time.Jasmine stood outside the front door, unable to make herself push

Jasmine kept checking her watch, an unusual flicker of impatience crossing her face. She couldn't put it off any longer. What time was Charlie's contest again? She froze, realizing with a jolt that she couldn't even remember the exact time, even though Cody had drilled it into her the day before, over and over.A flicker of panic hit her. She slipped away from the birthday crowd and headed toward the office, where she'd stashed the toy she'd bought that morning to give Charlie after the contest.Josh had been watching her the whole time, and he caught up to her quickly."You haven't even had cake yet," he said.Jasmine gave a distracted hum and kept walking without looking back."You all go ahead. I've got something to take care of."Josh shot a quick look at his son.Luke grabbed the hem of her jacket, staring up at her with wide, pleading eyes."Jasmine, weren't you going to teach me the violin? Why are you leaving already?"She looked down at him, torn. "I have something

Jasmine's expression smoothed out. She patted our son on the shoulder."Mom will be there."He was overjoyed. He dragged me out to buy craft supplies, and when I went to pay, he proudly pulled out his own change instead.Every bit of it was money he'd earned collecting bottles, saved up over a full year, and now he spent it all without a second thought. That night, he spent three hours building a beautiful little house, complete with a family of three holding hands out front. He lay in bed staring at it, refusing to close his eyes, until he finally couldn't fight sleep any longer and drifted off with a sweet smile on his face. The next afternoon, my son and I got to the preschool early. He held the little house against his chest, standing tall and proud. Before long, families arrived one after another, hand in hand. I watched his expression turn visibly anxious.A cold sweat broke out down my back. I silently prayed that Jasmine wouldn't let him down again. But over the next half
