Jasmine Pepper and I had been married seven years, and because we were poor, my son and I spent our nights secretly collecting bottles to recycle. My son was quick at it, and good, always looking up at me with a hopeful little face when we finished a round. "Dad, do we have enough saved up to take Mom to the amusement park?" Jasmine was frugal and quiet by nature, and she often turned down our son's requests, always claiming there wasn't enough money. But that day, I counted a whole bag of change and could hardly believe it. I grabbed my son's hand and took him to buy tickets for the amusement park. The moment I looked up, though, I froze. There was Jasmine, one hand laced with another man's, the other cradling his son, riding the carousel like she didn't have a care in the world. My son and I stood rooted to the spot. The ticket seller gave us an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, sir, but that lady's booked out the whole park for the day. You'll have to come back another time."

Jasmine didn't answer. Instead, she grabbed my hand and forced it against her own face, hitting herself with it, confessing as she went."It's my fault. I'm the one who made you and our son suffer."It's my fault. I never once kept my promise to our son."It's my fault. I didn't stand up for you when you were being harassed."Just hit me. Why won't you hit me?"By the end, she'd broken down into sobs.I listened to her confession calmly, feeling nothing at all. All the tears our son and I had cried, and she thought a few tears of her own could wipe that away? Hitting her would only make me look pathetic.Charlie noticed something was wrong from where he stood nearby. He dropped his skateboard and ran straight over, shoving Jasmine back hard and planting himself between us like a fierce little tiger guarding its den."Who are you? Leave my dad alone," he started, before Jasmine lifted her head and cut him off without a word. The second he saw her face, his eyes went red. His an

Josh assumed Jasmine still loved him and let out a satisfied laugh. But the next second, she shoved him hard. Caught off guard, Josh dropped straight onto the floor, his ankle twisting into an ugly angle. He cried out in pain."Jasmine, what are you doing?"His face had gone pale.Jasmine's brow furrowed tight. "What are you doing at my house?"Now that she'd finally worked out where things really stood between them, she didn't want to look at him for another second.Josh clearly sensed the shift in her. Panic crept in, and he blurted out the thing that had been eating at him."Is Cody upset with me? I didn't mean to run him off. Isn't it enough that I apologized?"Jasmine's hand froze on the door. She turned slowly, and the look on her face was terrifying."When did you run him off?"Guilt flashed across Josh's face. He stammered through the answer."That day, at Luke's birthday party, he showed up... I was worried he'd cause a scene, so I asked him to leave first.""Asked

Something inside Jasmine's head gave a violent snap, like a wire tearing loose. The background noise around her blurred into static. She kicked off her heels and closed the distance to the heavyset woman in a few quick strides, grabbing her by the hair and slapping her hard across the face.Blood poured from the woman's nose. She lay beneath Jasmine, sobbing and begging for mercy, but Jasmine didn't hear a word of it. She grabbed a serving tray off the nearby counter and brought it down on the woman's head, again and again, until she couldn't make another sound.Jasmine spat at her, turned, and went home.A delivery driver was standing at her door. Before he could say a word, the sight of her sent him stumbling back a few steps. Her white blouse was soaked in blood, her expression wild, radiating a warning that told anyone within reach to keep their distance. He set the package down on the ground once he'd put some distance between them."Your delivery. Nobody answered the phone,

Jasmine's hands started shaking as she called Cody on the way home."The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable."Maybe he was still too angry to pick up, Jasmine told herself, over and over. She'd go home and apologize properly. Cody had always had such an even temper, always so patient with her, right up to the edge of indulging her every whim. Was that exactly why she'd felt entitled to keep hurting him, again and again? No. She shuddered. But no matter how much she tried to deny it, she knew the truth. She'd been hurting Cody this whole time. Not with violence, not even with words, but through her actions, her attitude, slowly stewing him, slowly burning him down.By the time she'd fully faced what she'd done over the past several years, the back of her shirt was soaked through with sweat. She'd always thought of herself as refined, cultured. And yet, her character had been this ugly the whole time.Jasmine stood outside the front door, unable to make herself push
