The doors to the VIP delivery suite burst open as I slammed into them.

I landed on all fours without missing a beat, a low rumble vibrating in my throat as my sharp gaze swept across the room.

Propped weakly against the hospital bed was Victoria Sterling, eldest daughter of the Sterling family—the girl I'd protected for the past twelve years.

Her face was pale, her forehead clammy with sweat as she struggled to catch her breath.

Standing beside her was her husband, Ethan Caldwell, cradling a baby girl in his arms.

"You did great, sweetheart. Look at our daughter. She has your eyes." His voice was so gentle it practically dripped with affection, his eyes glistening with emotion.

Beside the bed stood Victoria's best friend of eight years, Cassandra Brooks. Dabbing away Victoria's sweat with a tissue, she smiled warmly.

"Victoria, your dream finally came true. She's practically your twin. She's going to grow into a heartbreaker just like her mom."

Victoria gazed lovingly at the baby, her eyes overflowing with the tenderness of a new mother. Her trembling hand slowly reached out, eager to stroke her daughter's tiny cheek.

Then the vicious baby voice echoed through my mind again.

[Touch me? Don't you dare touch me, you idiot!]

[Once I grow up, I'll pull your oxygen tube and transfer every last penny of your multibillion-dollar fortune to my mom!]

Every strand of fur on my body bristled upright, and my tail puffed out like a bottlebrush.

This little brat looked perfectly innocent in Ethan's arms, but inside, she was pure venom.

[Someone... please save me...]

[It's so dark... so cold... Something's stabbing my back... It hurts...]

I whipped my head toward the voice.

The weak cries were coming from the corner of the room where a stainless-steel cart overflowing with medical waste stood.

Stuffed into the bottom shelf was a bulging black garbage bag. The voice was coming from inside it.

Inside that bag was the real Sterling heiress. I'd guarded her for the past ten months, purring to her through her mother's belly every single day.

My claws scraped across the tile floor with a harsh screech.

[Damn it! You've been living off the Sterlings, and now you have the nerve to steal their daughter?]

[You're about to find out why cats have claws!]

I sprang over the hospital bed and launched myself at the black plastic bag.

Riiip!

My claws tore straight through the outer layer.

"Ahhh! The cat's gone crazy!" Martha Douglas, one of the maternity attendants, shrieked and stumbled backward.

Ethan's expression changed instantly. Instinctively, he hugged the fake heiress tighter and retreated.

"Victoria! What's gotten into Marmalade? Isn't he always the sweetest cat? Get him out of here before he scratches the baby!"

Cassandra hurried in front of the hospital bed, putting herself between Victoria and me. "Victoria, cats are covered in germs! Did he eat something filthy outside? Maybe he's gone feral from the stress.

"Security! Somebody get this crazy cat out of here!"

Two security guards rushed into the room and reached for the loose skin at the back of my neck.

I twisted away with feline agility and slashed at them with a backhand swipe.

"Hiss!"

One guard cried out in pain, jerking his hand back.

I planted myself squarely on top of the garbage bag, a deep, threatening growl rumbling from my chest.

Anyone who touched this bag was getting their throat ripped out.

[Cat God, did you come to save me? I… can't breathe...]

The tiny voice was growing weaker.

I frantically clawed at the opening, trying to bite through the knot sealing the bag shut.

"Stop!" Victoria's cold voice suddenly rang through the room.

Ignoring her exhaustion, she braced herself against the bed and forced herself upright. Her gaze swept past everyone before locking onto me.

"Marmalade has been with me for twelve years. He has never lashed out without a reason. He's trying to get into that bag..."

Her gaze slowly shifted to the torn black garbage bag.

"What is inside it?"

Five years flew by in the blink of an eye.Little Stella grew into a bright, cheerful little girl. She inherited the Sterling family's intelligence, and somehow, she could understand my cat language. The baby-language gift had faded as she'd gotten older, but the bond between us never did."Marmalade! Run! Uncle Logan's trying to catch us for a bath!"Five-year-old Stella tore across the garden on her little legs.I raced after her, all my chubby fluff bouncing with every stride.[Damn it! I hate baths! Hide behind the rock garden!]Logan stood on the lawn holding a garden hose, looking utterly helpless."Stella Sterling! If you keep helping Marmalade run away, you can forget about ice cream today!"Stella peeked out from behind the rocks and stuck her tongue out at him. "You're so mean, Uncle Logan! Marmalade says he doesn't want a bath!"Victoria stepped outside carrying a tray of afternoon tea. Watching us tear around the yard, she couldn't help smiling. In the past five

Three months later. My cast finally came off, and I was discharged from the veterinary hospital. The day I returned to the Sterling estate, Logan had a red carpet rolled out just for me. Two rows of bodyguards stood at attention in dark sunglasses before bowing in perfect unison."Welcome home, Cat God!"I strutted down the carpet with my tail held high. Now this was the life.Victoria had made a full recovery. After everything she'd been through, she'd changed. The pampered heiress who'd once lived only for love was gone. She had taken over several of Sterling Group's subsidiaries, making swift, decisive moves that established her as one of Evermont's most formidable businesswomen. As for the rivals who had hoped to watch the Sterling family fall apart, she and Logan crushed every one of them.At home, though, she was still the same gentle mother."Marmalade, come try this. It just arrived this morning."Smiling, Victoria set down a solid gold cat bowl filled with fresh blu

I had no idea how much time had passed.Warmth surrounded me, and the steady beep of medical monitors echoed in my ears.I slowly opened my eyes.Everything was white.I was lying inside a temperature-controlled ICU enclosure at a veterinary hospital. One of my front paws was wrapped in a cast, and tubes ran from every part of my body.Through the glass, I saw Logan. He looked exhausted. His eyes were bloodshot, dark stubble covered his jaw, and it was obvious he hadn't slept in days. The moment he saw my eyes open, he shot to his feet."Doctor! Marmalade's awake!"Several veterinarians hurried over and began examining me."It's a miracle.""The scans don't make any sense."The attending veterinarian stared at the monitor in disbelief."When Marmalade arrived, he had multiple ruptured organs, severe blood loss, and no detectable vital signs."But his body's healing itself at an unbelievable rate. I've never seen anything like it."I rolled my eyes.[Well, of course. Did

Two simple words. They hit Ethan like a sledgehammer. His laughter died instantly as he stared at Logan."What do you mean?"Without a word, Logan turned his phone around.A financial news broadcast filled the screen."Breaking news. Police have cracked a major international money laundering network."Authorities have seized every shell company connected to the case. Hundreds of billions of dollars in illicit assets have been recovered and frozen."The offshore accounts of the primary suspect, identified only as Mr. Caldwell, have also been frozen with assistance from Interpol."Ethan's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw the names of the companies on the screen. Those were all the shell companies he had set up over the past three years!"No! That's impossible!" He struggled wildly against the bodyguards. "I covered my tracks perfectly! You couldn't have found them!"Logan looked down at him with a cold smile."Ethan, did you really think spending three year

Logan snapped his fingers.Bodyguards poured through the doorway, sealing off every exit from the delivery suite.Realizing the situation was hopeless, a savage look flashed across Ethan's face. He suddenly broke free from the guards restraining him, snatched a pair of surgical scissors off the cart, and charged straight at Victoria."Damn you! If you won't let me live, then we'll die together!"Everything happened so fast that no one had time to react.Victoria was still cradling her precious daughter, with nowhere to run.Ethan's face twisted with madness as the scissors drove toward her throat.[Like hell I'll let that happen!]Ignoring the agony shooting through my fractured paw, I launched myself into the air.Smack! My paw slammed across Ethan's face. My claws raked deep, bloody grooves across his cheek.Ethan screamed. The scissors veered off course and buried themselves in the mattress.Logan reacted instantly. One brutal kick landed squarely behind Ethan's knee.

A deathly silence fell. The air inside the delivery suite seemed to freeze.Victoria's eyes flew wide open. She practically tumbled off the hospital bed, ignoring the blood still running down her legs as she scrambled toward the hidden compartment."My baby!"Dropping to her knees, she reached out with trembling hands but couldn't bring herself to touch the tiny infant whose skin had already turned purple. The baby's eyes remained shut. Her chest didn't rise or fall in the slightest."Doctor! Save her! Please, save her!" Victoria's anguished scream echoed through the room as tears streamed down her face.Murderous fury erupted in Logan's eyes. He grabbed the attending physician by the collar and shoved him toward the baby."If you can't save her, you'll never hold a scalpel again."The doctor stumbled to his knees and immediately began emergency treatment. He cleared the baby's airway, started CPR, and placed a tiny oxygen mask over her face. The only sound left in the delive
