Charlie actually had to change his opinion of Elaine after seeing her ready to kill Jacob earlier but getting all clingy now.

Despite her many flaws, Elaine was the one half of their marriage who was earnestly in love.

As for Jacob, he didn't seem to have any genuine feelings for Elaine at all.
