Aristide

I hadn’t stopped thinking about her since she left. Since she walked in, stared me in the eye, and asked if I got her fired. Like I was the kind of man who would ever tear her down just to keep her close.

It was insane. But it still gutted me.

So, I buried myself in work. I didn’t eat. I wasn’t sleeping. I barely left the office unless I had to, and even then, I didn’t really leave… I just existed elsewhere. The only thing that mattered now was figuring out who was behind the hit. I couldn’t protect Izzy if I didn’t know where the threat was coming from.

Enzo stormed into the office around midnight two nights later, looking more irritated than usual.

“You look like hell.”

I didn’t look up from the report in front of me. “Thanks.”

He folded his arms. “You need to fix things with her.”

“I will.”

“When? After you collapse from dehydration?”

I shot him a glare, but he didn’t back down.

“I’m fine,” I muttered.

He muttered something under his breath about me being a stubborn bastar

  • The Chosen Bride   Chapter 22

BellaThe car ride to the warehouse was silent. Not awkward, just tense. The kind of silence that made your skin itch and your thoughts spiral.Enzo drove. Matteo sat beside him, eyes forward, fingers tapping a slow, lethal rhythm on his thigh. I sat in the back, gripping the leather seat like it might ground me.The warehouse sat near the river, tucked behind rows of old shipping crates and loading docks long abandoned. It was one of ours. I recognized the markings on the door and the way the men outside didn’t flinch when they saw Matteo step out of the car.I followed them in without a word. The warehouse was anything but empty.Guards lined the walls. They were armed, alert, and stone-faced. The air crackled with restrained violence, the kind that made your skin prickle. I wasn’t afraid. Not anymore. Not after what happened to Aristide.I followed Matteo and Enzo through the warehouse until we reached the center of the room. There he was.Tied to a steel chair, ankles and wrists b

  • The Chosen Bride   Chapter 21

BellaIt had been a week. Seven long, dragging days. And Aristide was still asleep.Mabel snored softly in the corner of the hospital room, curled up in the chair with a blanket someone from the nurses' station had given her. She refused to leave my side, and because I refused to leave his… she camped out here with us every single night. She was the only reason I remembered to eat, shower, or change my clothes. But I was tired. Tired of waiting. Tired of staring at the stillness of his chest under the blanket, praying for the slightest twitch of movement. Tired of pretending to be calm when every second felt like I was cracking open from the inside. And worst of all, they still hadn’t found the bastard who did this to my husband.I grabbed my phone and, without thinking, scrolled to Marco’s name and hit call. It rang a few times before he picked up.“Bella?” My brother’s voice was laced with surprise. “Wow, I wasn’t expecting to hear from you.”“I figured that,” I murmured.“It’s good

  • The Chosen Bride   Chapter 20

BellaEnzo led me toward the car, his expression tight and unreadable. My heart was already pounding, a gnawing sense of dread creeping in.“What’s going on?” I asked as I slid into the seat. “Where’s Ari?”He closed the door gently, then turned to me with a heavy sigh. “He’s in the hospital.”The words hit like a punch. “What?” I choked out. “What happened? Is he okay?”“I’m telling you this so you’re prepared,” he said carefully, like every word was a fragile piece of glass. “Aristide was on his way to get you. Someone shot out a tire… the car crashed into a pole. Then whoever it was got closer and shot the car up. A few bullets got through.”“But… aren’t the cars bulletproof?” My voice rose with panic.“They are. But obviously, the crash created some weak points.”“Did you catch the guy?”“No,” he said, jaw clenched. “He’s still evading us.”“Still?” I snapped, eyes narrowing. “What do you mean still? How long has this person been after him?”He hesitated. I could see it in the way

  • The Chosen Bride   Chapter 19

BellaAfter I confronted Aristide, I went back to the hotel and cried myself to sleep. Everything in me broke when my room door closed behind me. I hated everything.I didn’t leave the hotel room again.Elena and Mabel tried several times to convince me that the pictures had to be fake, that there had to be some mistake. We were missing something. But while their points were valid, after the fourth time of hearing them, I snapped. “Stop!” I yelled, standing up at the table we were sitting at together. “I don’t want to hear it anymore.” I didn’t want excuses, I didn’t want hope.Since then, I barely spoke to either of them. I’d been silent for days, wrapped in grief and confusion. My heart felt cracked in half, and my mind kept replaying that moment when Gianna’s smug texts had shattered what little peace, I’d had left. Then Elena came in and said someone was here to see me.My stomach twisted. For a moment, I thought… hoped… it might be Aristide. But it wasn’t.It was Enzo.“I’m here

  • The Chosen Bride   Chapter 17

BellaBellaI woke up to my phone buzzing with texts. Still groggy, I reached for it, heart leaping stupidly in my chest. For a moment, I thought it was Aristide—maybe he was texting to apologize again. Maybe… maybe I had overreacted. But it wasn’t him.The screen lit up with Gianna’s name.My stomach dropped. The first message read:“I’m so sorry. I was just jealous. I realize now Aristide was just using me.”Then came the pictures.I couldn’t breathe. My fingers trembled as I scrolled—photo after photo of Gianna in bed… with Aristide.I screamed. A raw, wounded sound that ripped through the room.Within seconds, Elena and Mabel burst in.“What’s wrong?!” Elena gasped.I couldn’t even speak. I just handed her my phone. She took one look at the screen, brows pulling tight as she swiped through the images.“These are fake,” she said flatly.I blinked at her like she’d lost her mind. Of course she was taking his side.“Don’t you dare give me that look,” she snapped, eyes flashing. “I’m
