I felt warmer than usual. It was as if someone had wrapped me in a thick winter blanket, and if I focused hard enough, I could have sworn I felt hands caressing my arms. As the hands ran down the length of my arms, the warmth grew as small tiny little tingles were left in its wake. The small tingles filled my body with a nerve's warmth, something I hadn't felt before, and just as I began to welcome more of it, the hands left.
The sound of a persistent knock had me stirring from my slumber. As my eyes focused on the wood ceiling of our hut, I swear I could still feel the ghost-like touches on my arms. Sighing, I moved towards the door. Opening my bedroom door, I was shocked to see father standing on the other side with a wide grin on his face. Honestly, the look he was giving me screamed fake.
Gazing behind Father, I spotted the town's Chief and a lady holding a white dress. With a frown, I spoke, "Can I help you?"
Chuckling rather loudly, Father pushed his way into my room causing me to stumble back slightly. Something was defiantly off, and whatever game father was playing I didn't want anything to do with it. Moving my gaze to the village Chief, I lowered my head slightly. "What do we owe for this visit?" I tried to keep my words soft, remembering the words from the Nuns and the church. Given that the chief was in a high position, I had to show respect or suffer the consequences of my actions.
Giving me a small smile, the chief walked further into my room soon followed by the lady at the door. "Well, considering that tonight is the Choosing we have come to give you your dress for tonight."
Confused, I moved my gaze to my father, "But I thought that I wasn't-,"
"Nonsense!" came Father's voice. Quickly walking over to where I stood, Father placed his hands on my shoulders. "Of course, you're going." He said, "I know that you won't be chosen by the beast, as you're to marry Matthew, but the Chief here has requested all girls of age to attend."
"No restrictions." Added Chief.
Nodding, I turned to gaze at the lady now holding the dress I would be wearing for the night. Gently grasped in her tiny hands was a beautiful white silken dress. It seemed to have a floral pattern woven through the fabric, with a small hint of silver resting on the sleeves and bodice. Given that the full moon was tonight, I would finally dress to please the beasts of the moon. However nervous I was, the excitement of possibly finding Sharlee started to push the worry away, as well as my common sense.
Gently taking the gown from the lady, I bowed my head in thanks. With a deep breath, I lightly ran my fingers over the silk. "Isn't this too much, father?" I whispered, my eyes now watching Father.
With a gentle shake of his head, Father gazed at me with a sad smile. "Nothing is too much when it comes to you, my darling." Grasping my arm, Father gave it a gentle squeeze. "You deserve the world."
Closing my eyes, I resisted the urge to cry. If I were to be chosen tonight, I'd never see Father again. I wouldn't be able to help him or make sure he eats all of his meals. Clearing her throat, the older lady took the gown from my hand. "Let's get you ready, Miss."
Clapping his hands, the chief gave a small laugh. "That's right, there is much to do before you are to leave." Leave? Why was he talking as if I was to leave tonight?
Turning to exit the room, Chief stopped. Gazing at me with a warm smile, he spoke, "Happy birthday, Annabelle."
Smiling in return, I nodded. Making his way towards me, Father gently grasped my arm. "I'll see you when you're finished." Placing a small kiss on my forehead, he lingered longer than usual. As he pulled back, I noticed his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Happy birthday, my beautiful Annabelle." Watching Father leave with hunched shoulders, I knew he didn't want me to participate but we both knew I had no choice. Now that the choosing was here, I couldn't help but fear the thought of going into those woods. It's funny how only yesterday I was walking the path we would be taking today with happiness. Yet right now, I wished I could turn back time and forget all of this.
"Let's get your ready, Miss."

After what seemed like forever, I was finally done. Gazing in the mirror that had been placed in front of me, I could hardly recognise myself. The white dress fell to the floor in a beautiful wave. The silk almost seemed as if it was shining with the flicker of the light from the candle.
Sighing, I ran my hands down the soft material of the dress. "You look, beautiful miss." Softly whispered the older lady.
Forcing out a smile, I thanked her. Although I too agreed that the dress was beautiful, I couldn't help but think if this was how Sharlee had felt. Closing my eyes, I tried to think of a happier moment.
A soft knock on the door had my attention snapping away from my thoughts. Smiling at me from ear to ear was my father. His glassy eyes roamed the dress, as a sad, faraway look crossed his features. "You look beautiful, my love."
"Thank you," I whispered. I couldn't form any other words. I was afraid if I spoke I would break down and ruin the gown. Walking towards the older lady, Father thanked her. "May I have a moment alone with my daughter?"
"of course." With one final look my way, she left. Once the door was closed, Father reached into his back pocket. Pulling out a small dagger, he held it out towards me.
"Father?" I spoke. Gently grasping the handle, I looked up at him confused.
"I made this just for you, Annabelle."
"But... I already have one." I spoke.
Smirking, Father pulled out a leather garter for the dagger. "Did you think I hadn't noticed you lost my knife all those years ago?"
How could I forget? Gabriel had taught me how to throw a dagger on one of the rare days he had visited the village.
"Focus, Annabelle." Shouted Gabriel.
Groaning, I threw the knife at the target with a groan, only to have it fall to the ground once again. Chuckling at another failed attempt, Father returned to crafting a new leather sheath. Grabbing the blade from the ground, Gabriel came up behind me. The feeling of his presence had my skin tingling in delight.
Placing his hand over mine that now held the blade, I felt his breath tickle my neck as he spoke. "You're not releasing your hand at the right time." He said, "That's why the blade won't stick to the target."
Taking a deep breath, I rolled my eyes. "Because you know what you're talking about, don't you?"
A deep chuckle left his lips. The sensation of his chest against my back sent my heart fluttering. "I was taught by a great leader." He spoke.
Turning in his hold, I gazed up into his silver eyes. "Let me guess, your father taught you?" I laughed, only to have Gabriel move away from my body. Turning my body back around, Gabriel's hand moved my hand that held the dagger. Pulling our hands back, Gabriel gave a quick flick of his wrist sending the dagger off to the target. Hitting the board with a loud thud, I couldn't help but gawk at the weapon now lodged into the target some six feet away.
"No way," I whispered, completely shocked by how easy he made it seem.
"Told you." Came his sudden reply near my ear. His breath fanned across my neck and I could only imagine how close he was standing to my body.
Clearing my throat, I turned to Gabriel with a small smirk. "Show off."
Gripping the tops of my shoulders, my father frantically gazed down at me. "Promise me, if anything happens tonight you will use this dagger, if one of those beasts comes near you, you throw it as hard as you can."
Forcing a smile, I nodded. "You have my word."
Tonight, I was finally joining in on the Choosing, the very one I lost my best friend to. My father didn't want the wealth that came with being chosen, all he wanted was to keep us together. Sadly, for my father, I had other plans. Tonight, I was going to find out where Sharlee went. Even if it meant being taken by the beast themselves.
As I made my way towards the centre of town, many of the town children began to rush towards the forest's tree line. Most of the children seemed excited about the festivities that would be taking place tonight. If only they understood what it meant to be chosen. Nearing the forest, I was shocked to see everyone had already begun to celebrate. People in wolf skin paraded around a large bonfire in the centre of the field, while others drank and spoke loudly. Everyone looked to be having a good time.As I allowed myself to watch the people around me, I noticed a group of people sitting off to the side with frowns on their faces. Matthew and his friends looked on in disapproval of tonight's event, as a few of the young men in the group held their bows. Moving my gaze to Matthew, I couldn't help but notice the angry look on his face, and as I slowly approached him, I watched the features change to one of love. With a small wave, I moved closer.Bowing to the other men, I smiled. "Are you j
As I opened my eyes I found bright silver eyes gazing down at me. The man in front of me was so close, and I feared if I moved our lips would touch. Carefully taking in a breath, I couldn't help but notice how nice he smelt. He smelt of vanilla and rain. Gazing over his facial features I took in how sharp his jaw was, and how his skin seemed to be cleared of any blemishes apart from a small scar near his lips. Continuing my observation, recognition hit me like a sharp blade to the chest. Eyes wide, I took a small step back from him. As if he could read my thoughts, the man in front of me smirked. Not only was he the same man who purchased Father's sword a few days ago, but standing in front of me was the one person I had longed to see for so many years. "My precious little Anna." He whispered."My precious Anna." A sixteen-year-old Gabriel whispered."Gabriel?" I whispered. Although standing in front of me in the flesh, I didn't want to believe it was him. The Gabriel I knew left wi
I felt warmer than I normally would. It was as if I was cocooned in the finest of silks that were trying desperately to lull me back to sleep. My eyes and body refused to awaken in the fear I'd leave the warmth I was in. Beginning to wake from the warmth surrounding me, birds singing and light voices entered the darkness. listening to the sound of the birds, I found myself thinking about yesterday. I could remember standing in line and getting my crescent moon mark, before leaving into the forest with the other girls. I could see myself walking through the darkness before two silver eyes appeared in my vision. I remembered the eyes belonging to a beast, yet I wasn't afraid of him, for this beast was no threat to me. Gabriel...Slowly opening my eyes to the brightness of my room, I took in deep breaths to soothe my beating heart. I know I had fallen in the forest last night, yet here I lay, safely tucked into my blankets at home. "What?" I whispered, confused. Frowning, I quickly rem
"Sharlee!" Rushing toward her family, I felt hope bloom in my chest. I could see them crowding around something, and I could only hope it was my dear friend. Perhaps she had collapsed from the long night once she left the fringe of the forest, or maybe Sharlee was just so happy to be home she couldn't stand. Pushing my way through the small crowd that had begun to gather, I could now hear the cheers. They were congratulating her family, but why? Women were hugging her mother, as men clapped her father on the back. Coming to a halt beside her mother, I noticed she was holding the small white silk jacket she had given Sharlee before the beginning of the ceremony. As I gazed at the white silk item in her mother's arms, I felt my stomach drop. She had been chosen by the beasts in the forest. My close friend, who I'd never been apart from, was now gone.Gently placing a hand on her mother's shoulder to grab her attention, she moved her head in my direction with a broad smile. Her red tear-
Running towards the hut I could hear my father screaming, as loud crashes and banging sounded from behind the closed door. Coming to a stop by the door, I found my hand hovering over the wooden handle. It shook with each cry that fell from my father's lips. Taking a shaky breath, I clasped my hand around the wood, only to be pulled away. Turning to the person who now held my own in a vice-like grip, Gabriel stood before me with a blank look on his face."Come." He said before tugging me away. Giving my hand a reassuring squeeze, he pulled me away from the sound of my father's screams and the sound of banging. The sounds felt as if they were following me the further away I got from the hut. I hadn't seen my father in three days, not since he went to a neighbouring village to sell a few of his weapons. I hadn't known of his return until I overheard a few people talking about him. They said father had rushed in with his horse, Scraps, before jumping off and running towards the house. The
Running through the woods, I welcomed the adrenaline that coursed through my veins. Gritting my teeth, I fought the tears that kept falling from my eyes. My mother had left us. She had left my father and me. I knew something was wrong with her the past couple of days. Whenever I tried to play with her, she would look at me with disgust.Ever since she had returned from selling her gowns at a nearby village, she had acted weird. She had not unpacked her gear or taken me to the village like she usually did. She was cold. No longer was the loving feeling I once got from her received with open arms.Pushing my legs faster, I fought to find her. An elderly man told me she went into the woods after fighting with my father. Sobbing, I screamed out for her but was greeted with silence.Coming to a stop in a small clearing, I gazed up at the night sky. Rain pelted down from the dark clouds, soaking my white nightdress. Crying into my hands, I started to shake."Mummy!" Sniffing, I turned aroun
I stared wide-eyed as Gabriel advanced towards me. He looked angry, no he looked beyond angry, and with every step Gabriel took, I couldn't help but feel he was going to turn into a beast. I wasn't sure why I had yelled at him, and at this moment I honestly couldn't care. I had to remember why I was even in the Choosing, to begin with. I had to find Sharlee and if I had to use Gabriel, then so be it. He and I hadn't seen each other for a long time, and considering I didn't know anything about this whole Chosen thing, I wasn't about to let myself fall for him again. Long gone were the days we were kids and I would fantasise about being his. Right now, we were adults, and I knew what I wanted from my life. I needed to help my father and if marrying Matthew was the only way, I would swallow my pride for my father. Right now though, I needed to keep with my plan of finding Sharlee. I had seen Sharlee's family mourn the loss of their daughter for months, and I wouldn't let my father go
Since the night the young girl was found, all women and children were to be home before dark and to not travel alone. This meant Matthew stuck to me like a bad smell. Although I promised my father I would go on with this marriage to appease him, I still found myself longing to run into Gabriel's arms. I hadn't been able to see him for five days now, and those five days felt like hell.My body would always heat-up of a night time and with the new moon approaching it felt like it was getting worse. Five days, that's all it took for my body to crave his presence and five days we were in peace. At least that's what we all thought. When I woke that morning, I found my father seated beside my bed. He looked like he was deep in thought, and the longer I gazed at him the more I noticed he seemed tired. "Father?"The sound of my voice caught him off guard, causing him to jump slightly but he masked his surprise with a bright smile. "Good morning, Annabelle. Did you sleep well?"Nodding, I just
