Sage's POV

The aroma of brewing coffee and sizzling bacon usually pulled me out of bed with a gentle coaxing but this morning, the scent felt like a cruel joke. Another day, another forced interaction and another step further down the rabbit hole of my parents' matchmaking schemes. I dragged myself downstairs, my mind still replaying the frustrating scene in Michael's car. The way he had leaned in, the way my heart had betrayed me and the way he had known exactly what I was thinking. It infuriated me.

The dining room was empty. No polite chatter, no rustling of newspapers. Just the quiet hum of the refrigerator. My brow furrowed. This was unusual. My parents were creatures of habit, their mornings meticulously planned.

“Mrs. Gabe?” I called out, heading towards the kitchen.

The kindly housekeeper emerged, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. “Good morning, Miss Sage. Your parents left early. They had to go on a business trip, a three-day one. They left a note for you on the counter.”

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 83

Sage's POV My eyes burned but I refused to let the tears fall. Not here. Not in front of them. I forced a weak, wavering smile, a pathetic attempt at composure. "Hello," I managed to croak out, my voice a barely audible whisper. The word tasted like ash in my mouth.Andrew, seemingly sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere, stepped forward, his expression a mixture of confusion and concern. "Sage, are you alright?" he asked, his voice gentle, laced with a concern that only twisted the knife deeper. "You look... pale."The woman, sensing the tension, looked from Andrew to me, a faint crease appearing between her perfectly sculpted brows. "Is everything alright, Andrew, darling?" she asked, her voice still smooth but now with a hint of polite inquiry.Andrew quickly turned to her, a reassuring smile on his face. "Everything's fine, dear. Just a friend who's a little under the weather." He turned back to me, his gaze softening but I could see the unspoken message in his eyes: don't m

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 82

Sage's POV “Who told you that?” I finally managed to croak out, the words barely a whisper, my voice thick with disbelief. My eyes darted around as if the person who had revealed my deepest shame might suddenly materialize from the shadows. The question was desperate like a feeble attempt to understand how Michael, of all people, had stumbled upon such a devastating truth. He scoffed, a short, sharp sound devoid of any humor. “Do you know Anastasia?”The name hit me like a blow. Anastasia of course. It all clicked into place with a sickening thud. The venom in her voice, her ominous warnings, her cryptic remarks about knowing my secrets. It was her. She had done this. My blood ran cold, and a shiver traced its way down my spine despite the warm, humid air. How could she be so cruel?“How… how do you know her?” I stammered, the shock momentarily eclipsing the shame. My mind raced, trying to connect the dots, trying to fathom how.His gaze hardened, a flicker of something akin to disg

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 81

Sage's POV The scent of garlic and oregano from the pasta Michael had ordered did little to soothe my frazzled nerves. We sat in a quiet corner of the restaurant, the low hum of conversation and clinking silverware was a contrast to the chaotic whirlwind in my mind. Michael had been a comforting presence, ordering for me and letting me pick at my food in silence, occasionally offering a gentle, reassuring word. But the words Anastasia had spat at me in the restroom echoed relentlessly, particularly the one about Andrew.Back at home, the moment the door clicked shut behind me, the pretense of calm shattered. I fumbled for my phone, my fingers trembling as I scrolled to Andrew’s contact. It was late but I couldn't wait. My thumb hovered over his name, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach. What if it was true? What if Anastasia wasn't just spewing venom but actually revealing a painful truth?I pressed call, my heart thumping against my ribs. It rang once, twice, three times… then

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 80

Sage's POV "What are you trying to say?" I pressed, my voice barely a whisper, the fear in my stomach growing.Anastasia's smile widened, a predatory glint in her eyes. "Oh, nothing much. Just that Andrew is currently with his new girlfriend. He might propose to her soon since he is really into marriage."The air in the restroom seemed to thicken, pressing down on me. My vision blurred for a moment and I felt a sudden wave of dizziness. Andrew was in a relationship with someone else?"That's a lie," I choked out, though even to my own ears, my voice lacked conviction. It had to be a lie. She was trying to hurt me, to manipulate me, to make me feel small and insignificant.Anastasia simply shrugged, a picture of nonchalant elegance. "Believe what you want, Sage. But a little birdy told me Andrew was quite relieved when you left. Gave him the perfect opportunity, you see. No messy scenes, no awkward explanations. Just a clear path to his future." She leaned in even closer, her voice a

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 79

Sage's POV "Anastasia?" I whispered, the name a mere breath, barely audible. I felt like a deer caught in headlights, unable to move, unable to think. The elegant setting of the restroom felt like a cage. My mind raced, trying to piece together how she could possibly be here. Was this a coincidence? Or something far more sinister?Anastasia’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile that sent a shiver down my spine. "The one and only," she purred, her voice dripping with an unsettling sweetness. She turned off the faucet, her movements deliberate and unnervingly composed, and then slowly reached for a paper towel, never breaking eye contact in the mirror. "Fancy meeting you here, Sage. Though, I can't say I'm entirely surprised."My heart pounded, a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "What are you doing here?" I finally managed to croak out, my voice barely above a whisper. The question was absurd, I knew but my mind was blank with shock. She dried her hands meticulously, each movement p

  • The Coach's Forbidden Play   Chapter 78

Sage's POVI was shocked, and a wave of annoyance washed over me. Did he really just say that? After everything, after the drama and the humiliation, he was still making jokes and trying to flirt? My eyebrows shot up, and I stared at him, utterly dumbfounded."Michael!" I exclaimed, my voice a mixture of disbelief and indignation. "Are you serious right now? We just had a huge scene in there, and your sister just got married, and you're... you're asking for a kiss?"He straightened up, a wide, innocent grin spreading across his face. "Whoa, whoa, easy there, tiger! It was just a joke, Sage! A little levity to lighten the mood, you know? You don't need to get all worked up. And besides," he added, his eyes twinkling mischievously, "I didn't say you had to give me a kiss. I just said you could." He paused, then tilted his head, feigning thoughtfulness. "But if you're feeling really grateful and you insist on getting me something, you could always get me dinner."I rolled my eyes, a relu
