Sage Davis was once the name on everyone's lips, a rising basketball star with unmatched talent and a promising future. But one wrong move, one selfish mis-timed dunk during a critical game cost her team the trophy and left her with a shattered ankle and a fractured reputation. A year off the court has left her anxious and stripped of the confidence that once defined her. Now 19, she is back, taller, stronger, but haunted by doubts and the pressure of living up to her former glory. Enter Andrew Jefferson, turning forty, striking, with the kind of presence that commands attention. He is the new coach of the team and, awkwardly enough, her best friend's father. Sage expected discipline, rules, and professional distance but what she didn't expect was the spark, a mere fickle at first, and then a flame. He sees the fire in her, the talent she possesses, and the fragility she tries to hide. Against all odds, she finds herself drawn to the one man she should never want. Their connection is forbidden. Dangerous. Taboo. But as the line between right and wrong blurs, Sage must decide if she’s willing to risk everything, her future, her friendship, and the fragile pieces of herself she is still putting back together, for a love that was never supposed to happen. This is a story of redemption, desire, and the kind of love that breaks rules, norms……and hearts.

All eyes were on me.
As I walked through the familiar hallway, the chit-chat and laughter immediately died down, replaced with silent murmuring.
I could see judgment in their eyes. Suddenly, it felt like my sneakers' echoed through the hallway.
Sage Davis the girl who cost her team the championships because of a selfish shot. Who even does that?
I heard someone say to another person.
I clutched on the backpack I had on, ducking my head and kept moving. I could feel their piercing gaze on me even without looking.
The hallway wasn't packed as usual, and that was one thing I was grateful for. Summer school only had half of the school's population.
Some students had online classes while others spent the entire summer break partying and wasting time on the beach far away from here.
I spotted some of my teammates standing by a locker, and when their gaze fell on me, the expression on their faces was clear, they didn't want anything to do with me.
Hillcrest College hadn't changed in the one year I was gone, so that's good to know everything was still the same.
I made my way to the locker room, needing some time to breathe. The air was suffocating.
My ankle had healed, but the nerves never left me. It clung to me like a scar no one could see.
The locker room door made a cracking sound, a wave of nausea washing over me. I didn't realize how much I'd missed this place until now.
Steam rolled out like it was coming from a sauna. Sharp scent of soap filled the air. I blinked severally through the haze.
And for a minute, I could feel myself literally stop breathing.
He was there, towel wrapped around his waist, water dripping down his tanned body.
Muscles well-defined in every part of his upper body.
I opened my mouth to speak, to excuse myself, but I couldn't find the words I just kept staring.
He didn't look startled. He just calmly grabbed a shirt and glanced my way.
God, why the hell was I still staring?
“I didn't expect anyone yet," he said, his voice deep and gentle.
I watched him put the shirt over his head, my eyes never leaving his body until he had it on.
I couldn't move, didn't say a word I just stood there like a complete idiot.
Then he walked towards me, extending a hand. “I'm Coach Andrew Jefferson. I'll be leading the team this season."
Coach.
That word broke the trance I was in, pulling me back to reality, but I still couldn't say anything my thoughts were racing very fast.
A familiar voice came from behind me.
“Hey, Dad, I wanted to—"
She stopped mid-air when she saw me. It was Pauline, my best friend since high school.
She stood there surprised for a moment before launching herself at me, almost bringing the both of us to a fall.
“Oh my God, I missed you so much! I had no idea you were coming today," she said as her hug tightened.
I hugged her back, "I missed you too."
After a moment, she let go, and I turned back to the man who had introduced himself as the new coach. He had a smile on his face.
But no, this couldn't be Pauline's dad the man I'd heard about for years now but never had the chance to meet.
No, no, no, no.
Pauline had always said he was handsome, but I didn't expect this level of handsomeness.
"Hi, I'm Sage," I said, finally able to pull myself together.
He nodded, a polite smile spread across his lips. “I know, Pauline would never stop talking about you."
After a few seconds of silence, Pauline tugged me by the arm. “Come on, let's go change." I let her drag me to her locker. “We've got our first team intro in fifteen minutes," she said.
As Pauline got dressed in her cheer uniform, I kept telling myself that's your coach, that's Pauline's father, he's off-limits.
But tell that to the part of me that still felt the intensity of his eyes on me long after he was gone.
I also got dressed in my practice gear, and we both made our way to the gym. Pauline held my hand as she noticed the way everyone stared at me.
“So, what do you think about my dad coaching? Pretty cool, right?"
I tried to sound normal about her bringing up her dad. “I didn't expect him to look like that..."
She snorted. “I know, right? He gets that a lot."
“Do you think it's weird working with your dad?" I asked.
“Nope, it's pretty cool. I’ll get to spend more time with him, and he's not planning on staying for long it's just for the season."
Those words should have made me feel better, but they didn't.

When we got to the gym, most of my teammates were already there stretching.
No one said a word to me they just kept giving me mean looks.
But I wasn't going to allow this to stop me. I was stronger than all of this.
Coach Andrews stood at the center of the court, clipboard in hand. We all gathered in one line, and he looked very serious, but his voice was commanding yet calm.
"Welcome back, everyone. For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Coach Andrews, and due to the circumstances with your past coach, I will be the one in charge for this season.
That aside, we are here to prepare for the biggest tournament in the region. I know there's been some changes. and I'm not going to be here permanently, I'm only here to help the team win and I take that seriously."
His eyes roamed the ground, landing on me, and it lasted longer than expected.
I looked away fast.

Practice started and it was brutal. I hadn’t been on the court for a while and I missed it, but I was barely holding up. My ankles held up through out practice but but barely. The pivots and sharp cuts they still made me hesitate. I hated it. Every time I pulled back even slightly, it felt like proof that I wasn’t who I used to be.
Coach didn’t say anything to me, he just watched. I could feel his gaze on me even when I wasn’t looking.
After about two and a half hours, we wrapped up. My legs ached so much, my lungs burned for air, smell of sweat thick in the air.
I stayed back, bouncing a ball as everyone left one after the other, including Pauline.
And that’s when I heard his voice again.
“You move well.”
I turned around and he stood, arms crossed, watching me from near the bench.
“Thank you,” I said, forcing a smile.
“You’re not at full strength yet.”
“And I’m not sure I ever will,” I mumbled under my breath as I kept bouncing the ball.
“Hey, hey, don’t say that. You are good, Sage. And you will get better.”
His voice was so reassuring.
He walked further into the court. “All you need is more time on the court.”
I kept bouncing the ball around, not meeting his gaze. “You don’t know what they say about me, do you?”
“Oh, I do, believe me.” I looked up at him and we started laughing.
“I didn’t know you listen to gossip,” I said.
“I have Pauline for a daughter. I listen to everything.” I just smiled.
He looked even more handsome when he was being playful. And his smile my Lord.
“But don’t let what they say define who you are, and who you're going to become,” he said, dropping the playful demeanor.
His voice was steady, and it made me feel safe.
“Do you always give such great advice?”
He walked closer to me.
“I know what it’s like living with regret. Don’t let it consume you.”
We stood there in silence for a moment.
I moved back.
“I should get going.”
He nodded. “Sure. See you tomorrow, Sage.”
As I walked towards the door, I could still feel his eyes on me.
Sage's POV Anastasia's presence was a toxic cloud, a storm that had just rolled into our little haven. She leaned down, her face a mask of feigned concern, her voice a low, venomous whisper. "Pauline," she said, her eyes boring into my best friend's. "You don't need to force yourself to be with them. You're better than this." She held Pauline's shoulder, a possessive, territorial grip. "I've been so worried about you, sweetheart. Especially when you didn't come home. Come with me. Let's go home."She held Pauline's hand, her fingers lacing with hers, a sickeningly sweet gesture that made my stomach churn. She pulled Pauline to her feet, a silent act of aggression. Then, she turned to Andrew and me, her face a mask of pure hatred. "You two should stop forcing yourselves on my daughter. You're shameless. Whatever is going on between you two, you should keep Pauline away from it."She started to drag Pauline away, but my best friend was stronger than she looked. Pauline pulled her hand
Sage's POV Andrew suggested we all have dinner at his restaurant, a treat from him to celebrate our reunion. He and I left first. He dropped me off at my place so I could change before he drove home to get ready. The evening air felt different, lighter and filled with a promise of a new beginning.I went inside, my heart soaring, a joyful melody playing in my head. I quickly found a dress, a beautiful sapphire blue one that I had saved for a special occasion. I did my hair, a simple updo and applied a little makeup, my hands trembling with excitement. An hour later, the doorbell rang. It was Andrew. He was wearing a dark suit that fit him perfectly, and his eyes held a soft, loving gaze that made my heart flutter. He drove to the restaurant, a place I had never seen before. It was beautiful, with a warm, inviting ambiance and soft, romantic lighting. He had already made reservations and soon, Pauline and Kay joined us. We all sat together at a round table, a happy, reunited family an
Sage's POV She wrapped her arms around both of us, her body a warm, comforting presence against mine. She held us tightly, her head resting on Andrew's shoulder and I could feel the silent sobs that racked her body. We held her just as tightly, our arms a protective shield around her, a promise to never let her go.After a long moment, she pulled away, her eyes still red, but a small, determined smile on her lips. She looked at Andrew, a playful glint in her eyes. "Dad," she said, her voice soft but firm. "If you ever hurt Sage, you don't need my permission to never forgive you. I have no intention of forgiving you."Andrew let out a warm, genuine laugh, the sound of a beautiful melody that was a balm to my bruised and broken heart. "I'll take your word for it, Pauline," he said, a proud, happy smile on his face.Just then, Kay walked back into the room, a tray of hot chocolate in his hands. He looked at us, his eyes filled with a new kind of relief and happiness. "I'm sorry to inte
Sage's POV He stood there, his eyes filled with a raw, vulnerable plea, his hand reaching out to her, a silent offering of peace. The room was thick with a tense, expectant silence, the air heavy with unspoken emotions. Pauline just stared at him, her face a mask of conflicting emotions, a mix of anger, betrayal and a deep sadness. She didn't say anything, and I knew it was my turn to speak. I had to tell her the truth, all of it, without any pretense or lies. I had to show her how much I cared, how much I loved her, how much I needed her in my life.I took a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest, a frantic drumbeat of nerves. I took a step closer to her, my voice thick with emotion. "Pauline," I began, my voice a soft, sincere whisper. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry for everything. I know I hurt you. I know I betrayed your trust. I know I should have told you. And I know that my actions led to all of this. But I have to be honest with you. I don't regret meeting Andrew. And I don
Sage's POV We stood on the porch, Mia's words ringing in our ears, a cold, empty feeling in the pit of my stomach. Pauline was gone. Mia hadn't seen her, which meant Anastasia also had no idea and Pauline had lied. My mind raced, trying to figure out where she could be. The city was a maze and Pauline could be anywhere. My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic drumbeat of dread.Just then, a thought, a single, clear thought, broke through the chaos. "Kay," I whispered, my voice thick with a sudden realization.Andrew looked at me, a confused expression on his face. "Kay? Who's Kay?""He's the only other person Pauline trusts," I said, my voice filled with a new kind of urgency. "He's her friend. He's been there for her. He's the only one I can think of who would know where she is. He's the only one she would trust enough to tell her where she's staying."Andrew's eyes widened with a dawning realization. He immediately pulled me to his car, his voice urgent. "Lead the way, Sage. We're
Sage's POV I stood there, tears in my eyes, a wave of profound relief washing over me. He understood. He wasn't angry at me anymore. He was just a man, a father, who had been hurt and had lashed out in pain. I reached out and gently touched his arm, my voice a soft whisper. "I forgive you," I said, a small, genuine smile touching my lips. "I could never be angry with you."A genuine, grateful smile touched his lips and he took my hand, his fingers lacing with mine. The simple touch was a quiet promise of a new beginning. We sat there, on the edge of the basketball court, the sun setting behind us, casting a warm, orange glow over the city. We talked about everything, about the last few days, about the pain, the anger, the fear. We didn't leave anything unsaid. We were finally, completely, honest with each other."I'm so sorry, Sage," he said, his voice a low, sincere rumble. "I almost gave up on us. I almost let my anger get the best of me. But I'm not going to do that again. I'm goi
