Chapter 2 Prayers for Another Man

Author: Mountain Moon
I climbed into a taxi and gave the driver an address.

Then, I pulled out my phone, scrolled through my contacts, and dialed a number I hadn't called in years.

"Three years ago, you invited me to join your team overseas. Is that offer still open?"

The answer came without hesitation.

I closed my eyes for a moment before speaking again. "Good. But I need you to help me with something. I need to fake my death."

As soon as I hung up, my phone started ringing nonstop. Elsie, Kian, and my family all tried calling, but I ignored every one.

Then the messages started coming in.

Kian asked, "Kellan, where the hell are you? Elsie's losing her mind trying to find you!"

A moment later, my sister sent me a video.

Upon playing it, my grip tightened.

Elsie appeared on the screen with a fresh scrape running down her arm. She was limping, and her clothes were covered in mud and dirt. She looked like she'd been through hell.

Jemma wrote, "Kellan, Elsie got hit by a car while she was looking for you! Mom and Dad freaked out when they heard about the accident! Where are you? Please stop scaring us!"

I stared at the screen for a long moment, my grip tightening before I finally forced myself to calm down.

After some hesitation, I sent them my location. Then, I turned off my phone and started climbing the long staircase in front of me.

Two months earlier, not long after I'd woken from my coma, Kian had shown me a video of Elsie climbing these very steps. She'd been making her way up to the chapel on her knees, stopping every so often to catch her breath before continuing.

Elsie had never been particularly religious. But during the three years I'd spent unconscious, she'd apparently made the climb countless times, praying for me to wake up.

After I regained consciousness, she barely left my side. Then, one day, she disappeared for an entire day.

When she finally returned, she looked exhausted. I asked where she'd been, and her face lit up.

"I went back to the chapel," she said with a smile. "I promised God that if you ever woke up, I'd come back to thank Him. I had to keep that promise."

I'd noticed her torn pants and the swollen red mark on her forehead, and my eyes had filled with tears. Overwhelmed by how much she seemed to love me, I'd pulled her into my arms and made a promise.

"Elsie, let's get married."

Back then, I'd been so happy and so certain of her love that I hadn't noticed her body stiffening for a split second when I mentioned marriage.

Now, remembering that moment, I finally understood.

It took me nearly an hour to climb the hundreds of steps to the top. By the time I got there, the leg I'd had surgery on after the accident was aching badly.

I stopped to catch my breath, bending forward with my hands on my knees. Once the pain eased a little, I made my way into the chapel and headed toward the small prayer alcove where Elsie had told me she'd lit a candle in memory of our unborn baby.

But when I reached the candle stand, I froze.

Beside the flickering candle was a small prayer card with a handwritten message dedicated to Jude.

I recognized the handwriting immediately. It was Elsie's.

For a moment, I could only stare at the card. My fingers curled into fists, and a sharp pain spread through my chest as I struggled to make sense of what I was seeing.

Three years ago, the accident hadn't just left me in a coma. Elsie had been pregnant with our child, and she had lost the baby because of the crash.

Jude was the reason our baby had never gotten the chance to be born.

Yet here, in the very chapel where Elsie had supposedly prayed for our child, she'd written his name instead.

All this time, I'd believed she'd been lighting candles for the baby we'd lost. Instead, she'd been praying for the man who'd taken our child from us, asking God to forgive him and grant him happiness.

My hand shook as I reached for the prayer card, ready to tear it apart.

Just as my fingers brushed its edge, hurried footsteps sounded behind me.

"Kellan!"

I turned to see Elsie rushing toward me. Before I could pull the card free, she pushed past me and snatched it from the stand.

"Don't tear that up!"

I stared at her in disbelief. "Why? You told me you lit that candle for our baby! So, why the hell is Jude's name on it?"

My voice cracked, and I could barely get the words out.

Elsie's expression faltered. She opened her mouth to explain, but didn't know what to say.

Before she could answer, another voice sounded from behind us.

"Don't blame Elsie. Your father and I were the ones who suggested it."

For a moment, Jemma's confession caught me off guard. But the surprise quickly faded, leaving me indifferent.I gave a cold smirk. "So?"Kian looked at me, regret in his eyes."I'm sorry, Kellan. Jude was responsible for everything, but we kept defending him. We took his side when we should've been protecting you." He lowered his head. "He's finally been punished for what he did."I nodded, but his words stirred nothing in me."All right. Now, I know. If that's all you came to tell me, you can leave."Neither Jemma nor Kian tried to persuade me to come home. Perhaps they'd finally realized there was nothing they could say to change my mind. However, just as they were about to leave, Jemma turned back. "Kellan, Mom and Dad have been having a really hard time, too. If you can, please give them a call."I was silent for a moment before answering, "Just tell them I'm doing fine. That's all they need to know."Jemma opened her mouth as though she wanted to say more, but eventually

I knew this day would come, so I wasn't especially surprised when I stepped outside and saw Elsie waiting for me.The first snow of the season had fallen that morning, and the air was bitter and cold. I went back inside to grab an extra scarf before heading over. She looked thinner than I remembered—thinner even than when I first woke from my three-year coma. Her hair was disheveled, and the familiar brightness had faded from her eyes. She looked like she hadn't slept well in days.I walked toward her, my breath forming small clouds in the freezing air.The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears. "Kellan...""Don't call me like that," I said coldly. "You don't get to act like we're still close."She flinched, swallowing her words. After a moment, she reached up and removed the jade pendant from around her neck. One corner had chipped, and thin streaks of dried blood had settled into the cracks. My gaze dropped to the wound on her palm, and I immediately understood where

Kellan's POVAfter pulling two all-nighters, I finally finished analyzing the experimental data.I leaned back in my chair and rubbed my aching temples, struggling to stay awake.Just then, someone placed a cold can of soda on my desk. Beads of condensation trickled down its sides. "Well, that's it," the person said. "You can finally take a few months off."I looked up to find Lena Moore standing beside me.I let out a long breath and cracked open the can. The first sip of icy soda helped clear some of the fog from my exhausted brain."I'm planning to sleep for the next few days," I told her. "I haven't had a decent night's rest since I got here. If I'd known joining your team would be this exhausting, I might've thought twice about coming."Lena raised an eyebrow. "Really? You would've turned down the chance to work on this project?"I opened my mouth to argue, but I had no comeback. After a moment, my shoulders slumped in defeat. "Fine, you got me. I wouldn't have missed it

Elsie hadn't left her bedroom in three days.Jude spent most of that time pacing outside her door, knocking and calling her name, but she never answered. With each passing hour, his anxiety grew. After Kellan's accident three years ago, Elsie's therapist had warned that she'd suffered severe emotional trauma. The thought of losing Kellan had nearly destroyed her, and another tragedy might push her beyond what she could bear. That was why Elsie had asked Kellan's family and Kian to keep a close eye on him. It hadn't been entirely about giving her more freedom to see Jude behind his back. She'd genuinely been terrified that something might happen to Kellan again.Ever since he'd woken from his coma, someone had almost always been there to watch over him. However, the one time they'd all left him alone, he'd been involved in another accident."Elsie?" Jude called, knocking on the door once more.As usual, no one answered.Just then, the doorbell rang.Jude hurried downstairs and

  • The Coldest Betrayal   Chapter 6 What Remained

Elsie drove so fast that she came dangerously close to speeding several times. Even before they reached the scene of the accident, the acrid smell of burnt rubber and scorched metal drifted through the air.The moment they stepped out of the car, everyone stopped in their tracks. They'd been convinced the phone calls were a scam, or perhaps someone's cruel prank. But just ahead, at the foot of a rocky slope, sat the charred remains of a car. The fire had consumed almost everything, leaving little more than a twisted metal frame. There really had been an accident.Elsie's eyes widened as memories of the crash three years ago came rushing back. It was a nightmare she'd never been able to forget. She could still picture Kellan lying motionless in a pool of blood. There had been so much of it, more than she'd ever seen. That accident had left him in a coma for three years, and even now, the memory made her chest heavy. And now, standing before another wrecked car, she felt the same t

Third-Person POV"What did you just say?" Elsie asked. For a moment, she could barely breathe as the caller's words echoed in her head. The man on the other end paused before repeating, "Kellan Cobb was involved in a serious car accident on Northern Road. I'm afraid we need you to come and identify his body."Elsie's face was drained of color. The others noticed her expression and quickly gathered around, asking what was wrong. Her fingers trembled as she switched the call to speakerphone."Say that again," she demanded, her voice suddenly cold. "What happened to Kellan?"The caller sounded increasingly impatient. "Ma'am, as I've already explained, Mr. Cobb was involved in a car accident on Northern Road. Your name and number is listed as his emergency contact. We need you to come to the scene and confirm his identity."The group fell silent.Jemma was the first to react. She snatched the phone from Elsie's hand and shouted, "What kind of sick scam is this?
