Chapter 3 Hasn't He Suffered Enough?

Author: Mountain Moon
I froze for a moment before turning to my parents.

My voice trembled as I asked, "Why?"

They exchanged uneasy glances but said nothing.

Just then, Jemma walked into the chapel. She took one look at me and frowned. "Kellan, the baby's already gone. What's the point of keeping a candle burning for someone who's never coming back?"

I stared at her, unable to believe what I'd just heard.

"While you were in a coma, Jude treated Mom and Dad like they were his own parents," Jemma continued. "He looked after them for three whole years when you couldn't. What's so wrong with lighting a candle and saying a prayer for him?"

Her expression was grim. "If anything, you should be grateful to him. Instead, you're trying to tear up his prayer card! Don't you think you're taking things too far?"

Her words hit me like a punch to the chest.

I stared at the little sister I'd spoiled and protected since childhood. For the first time in my life, she looked like a complete stranger.

I clenched my teeth and spat, "If it weren't for him, I never would've been in that accident!"

Before anyone could respond, footsteps sounded at the chapel entrance. Kian walked in with Jude beside him.

"Kellan, Jude didn't mean for the accident to happen," Kian said. "He's spent the last three years doing everything he can to make up for it. Can't you just let it go?"

The way he defended Jude was painfully familiar. It was exactly how he'd stood up for me whenever someone bullied me back in school.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned to Elsie. "Was it really an accident?"

Elsie's expression faltered. Her eyes darted away, and she couldn't bring herself to meet my gaze.

That was when I realized she hadn't told anyone the truth. They all still believed Jude had hit me by accident.

I let out a bitter laugh and was about to set the record straight when Elsie suddenly grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward the chapel doors.

Her grip was surprisingly strong.

I tried to pull away, but she refused to let go. It wasn't until we reached the hallway that I caught her wrist with my free hand and forced her to stop.

Elsie's eyes were red, and her free hand was clenched tightly at her side.

"Kellan..." Her voice trembled. "You know, don't you?"

I said nothing, only staring at her.

Her fingers tightened around my wrist. "You can't tell them, Kellan. Please. If you tell them what really happened, Jude's life will be ruined."

She shook her head desperately. "Your parents, Jemma, Kian... None of them will ever forgive him."

"What about me?" My voice cracked as I stared at her through the tears pooling in my eyes. "He put me in a coma for three years and killed our baby. Do you think he should just get away with it?"

The last words came out as a scream.

Elsie immediately threw her arms around my waist. "I'm sorry, Kellan. I'm really sorry."

She repeated those words over and over, clinging to me as though she were afraid I'd disappear. I felt something warm against my neck and realized she was crying.

For a moment, I couldn't even breathe.

Then, she spoke again. "But Kellan, it's not like Jude hasn't suffered."

I went rigid.

"He's barely been able to sleep for the past two years, and the guilt has been eating him alive. He regrets what happened every single day." She pulled back slightly to look at me. "Hasn't he been punished enough?"

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I struggled to process what she'd just said. I'd spent three years in a coma, nearly lost my life, and lost our unborn child. Yet somehow, Jude's sleepless nights were supposed to make up for it all.

The absurdity of it almost made me laugh, but I was so close to tears that I couldn't even manage a smile.

Elsie reached for my hand. "Please, Kellan. Stop making this harder than it has to be."

She hesitated, then lowered her voice. "Just pretend you never found out."

Something inside me finally gave way.

I stared at the woman I'd once dreamed of spending the rest of my life with. I believed every promise she made and every tear she shed for me, even convincing myself that the three years I'd spent in a coma had only made our love stronger.

Now, I knew better.

I slowly pulled my hand from hers. "Elsie, we're done."

Her face went pale, and her breathing turned rapid.

"No, Kellan." She shook her head. "I'm not breaking up with you."

I looked at her, surprised by how calm I suddenly felt. "Then, what about Jude?"

She froze.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Finally, she closed her eyes. "I'll send him away."

For a moment, Jemma's confession caught me off guard. But the surprise quickly faded, leaving me indifferent.I gave a cold smirk. "So?"Kian looked at me, regret in his eyes."I'm sorry, Kellan. Jude was responsible for everything, but we kept defending him. We took his side when we should've been protecting you." He lowered his head. "He's finally been punished for what he did."I nodded, but his words stirred nothing in me."All right. Now, I know. If that's all you came to tell me, you can leave."Neither Jemma nor Kian tried to persuade me to come home. Perhaps they'd finally realized there was nothing they could say to change my mind. However, just as they were about to leave, Jemma turned back. "Kellan, Mom and Dad have been having a really hard time, too. If you can, please give them a call."I was silent for a moment before answering, "Just tell them I'm doing fine. That's all they need to know."Jemma opened her mouth as though she wanted to say more, but eventually

  • The Coldest Betrayal   Chapter 9 No Going Back

I knew this day would come, so I wasn't especially surprised when I stepped outside and saw Elsie waiting for me.The first snow of the season had fallen that morning, and the air was bitter and cold. I went back inside to grab an extra scarf before heading over. She looked thinner than I remembered—thinner even than when I first woke from my three-year coma. Her hair was disheveled, and the familiar brightness had faded from her eyes. She looked like she hadn't slept well in days.I walked toward her, my breath forming small clouds in the freezing air.The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears. "Kellan...""Don't call me like that," I said coldly. "You don't get to act like we're still close."She flinched, swallowing her words. After a moment, she reached up and removed the jade pendant from around her neck. One corner had chipped, and thin streaks of dried blood had settled into the cracks. My gaze dropped to the wound on her palm, and I immediately understood where

Kellan's POVAfter pulling two all-nighters, I finally finished analyzing the experimental data.I leaned back in my chair and rubbed my aching temples, struggling to stay awake.Just then, someone placed a cold can of soda on my desk. Beads of condensation trickled down its sides. "Well, that's it," the person said. "You can finally take a few months off."I looked up to find Lena Moore standing beside me.I let out a long breath and cracked open the can. The first sip of icy soda helped clear some of the fog from my exhausted brain."I'm planning to sleep for the next few days," I told her. "I haven't had a decent night's rest since I got here. If I'd known joining your team would be this exhausting, I might've thought twice about coming."Lena raised an eyebrow. "Really? You would've turned down the chance to work on this project?"I opened my mouth to argue, but I had no comeback. After a moment, my shoulders slumped in defeat. "Fine, you got me. I wouldn't have missed it

Elsie hadn't left her bedroom in three days.Jude spent most of that time pacing outside her door, knocking and calling her name, but she never answered. With each passing hour, his anxiety grew. After Kellan's accident three years ago, Elsie's therapist had warned that she'd suffered severe emotional trauma. The thought of losing Kellan had nearly destroyed her, and another tragedy might push her beyond what she could bear. That was why Elsie had asked Kellan's family and Kian to keep a close eye on him. It hadn't been entirely about giving her more freedom to see Jude behind his back. She'd genuinely been terrified that something might happen to Kellan again.Ever since he'd woken from his coma, someone had almost always been there to watch over him. However, the one time they'd all left him alone, he'd been involved in another accident."Elsie?" • The Coldest Betrayal   Chapter 6 What Remained

Elsie drove so fast that she came dangerously close to speeding several times. Even before they reached the scene of the accident, the acrid smell of burnt rubber and scorched metal drifted through the air.The moment they stepped out of the car, everyone stopped in their tracks. They'd been convinced the phone calls were a scam, or perhaps someone's cruel prank. But just ahead, at the foot of a rocky slope, sat the charred remains of a car. The fire had consumed almost everything, leaving little more than a twisted metal frame. There really had been an accident.Elsie's eyes widened as memories of the crash three years ago came rushing back. It was a nightmare she'd never been able to forget. She could still picture Kellan lying motionless in a pool of blood. There had been so much of it, more than she'd ever seen. That accident had left him in a coma for three years, and even now, the memory made her chest heavy. And now, standing before another wrecked car, she felt the same t

Third-Person POV"What did you just say?" Elsie asked. For a moment, she could barely breathe as the caller's words echoed in her head. The man on the other end paused before repeating, "Kellan Cobb was involved in a serious car accident on Northern Road. I'm afraid we need you to come and identify his body."Elsie's face was drained of color. The others noticed her expression and quickly gathered around, asking what was wrong. Her fingers trembled as she switched the call to speakerphone."Say that again," she demanded, her voice suddenly cold. "What happened to Kellan?"The caller sounded increasingly impatient. "Ma'am, as I've already explained, Mr. Cobb was involved in a car accident on Northern Road. Your name and number is listed as his emergency contact. We need you to come to the scene and confirm his identity."The group fell silent.Jemma was the first to react. She snatched the phone from Elsie's hand and shouted, "What kind of sick scam is this?
