Maybe it was overkill, but the word went out that Ormond wanted able-bodied men to report to the castle – no exceptions – as there was likely to be a new threat to the kingdom. Cryers were sent out to spread the word in the towns and villages and soon the place was swarming with strangers from as far afield as Alba and Larch.

Among them was Earl Adam Campbell, much to Xander’s surprise.

“I thought Cassie told us he was dead?”

Iain, looking distracted – Jocasta was in a bad way – mentioned then what he knew.

“She lied?”

It seemed it was news to Will, as well.

“I only know what my sister said. We were talking about deceit for some reason and I happened to say the lass was sound. I’m not saying she’s not to be trusted, but many a false yarn is spun by an open fire.”

Eithne spoke then, offering a woman’s insight.

“Maybe she wished she’d had the courage to do such a thing.”

“Remind me never to bolster your resolve,” Xander remarked. “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
