Chapter 7

Katie's POV

For weeks, we traveled across the country, never staying in one place for too long, always looking over our shoulders and sleeping with one eye open. It was a grueling and exhausting journey, but we knew that it was necessary if we wanted to stay alive.

And then, just when we thought that we were safe, our past caught up with us.

It was a sunny afternoon, and we had just checked into a small hotel in a sleepy little town, hoping to rest and regroup after days on the road. We were sitting in the lobby, sipping on hot coffee and discussing our plans for the future, when a man walked in and approached us.

At first, we didn't think anything of it. But then, as he got closer, we saw the glint of recognition in his eyes, and we knew that we were in trouble.

It was one of the masked men who had attacked us in our home, and he had somehow managed to track us down.

In an instant, the hotel lobby turned into a battlefield, as we fought for our lives against the man and his accomplices. It was a brutal and bloody fight, and I thought for sure that this would be the end.

But then, just when all seemed lost, we were saved by an unexpected ally.

It was Jack, our PI, who had been tailing us all along, watching our backs and gathering evidence against our attackers. He had managed to track them down and had arrived just in time to turn the tide of the battle in our favor.

With his help, we were able to overpower the attackers and hand them over to the police, finally putting an end to the nightmare that had plagued us for so long.

It was a bittersweet victory, though, for we knew that our lives would never be the same again. We had lost everything, our home, our sense of security, and even our trust in the people around us.

But through it all, we had each other, and we knew that together, we could overcome anything that life might throw our way.

As we hugged each other, tears streaming down our faces, we made a silent vow to never let anything come between us again, to cherish each other and protect each other always, no matter what the future might hold. And with that promise, we stepped into the unknown, ready to face whatever lay ahead, secure in the knowledge that we had each other to rely on.

As we left the hotel, Jack led us to a secluded spot where his car was parked. We got in, and he started driving, the only sound in the car was the hum of the engine and the occasional sigh from one of us.

For a while, we drove in silence, lost in our own thoughts and emotions. But then, Jack spoke up.

"I know this must have been tough for you," he said, glancing at us through the rearview mirror. "But I hope you know that I'll always have your back."

We nodded, grateful for his support, and settled back in our seats, lost once again in our thoughts.

It wasn't until we were a few hours into our drive that Alex spoke up, breaking the silence.

"Where are we going?" he asked, his voice low and uncertain.

I looked over at him, sensing the fear and uncertainty in his eyes, and reached out to take his hand.

"We're going to a safe house," I said softly. "A place where we can regroup and figure out our next move."

Alex nodded, but I could tell that he was still uneasy. And who could blame him? After everything that we had been through, it was natural to feel scared and unsure.

But I knew that we had to keep moving forward, that we couldn't let fear and uncertainty paralyze us.

And so, we drove on, our future uncertain but our hearts full of hope and determination.

As the sun began to set, we arrived at the safe house, a modest but secure house tucked away in a secluded part of the countryside. Jack led us inside, showing us around and making sure that everything was secure.

As we settled in, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Jack's help and support. Without him, we might not have made it this far.

But at the same time, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were still in danger, that our attackers might come after us again. And as I lay in bed that night, my mind racing with thoughts and fears, I realized that we still had a long road ahead of us, that we were far from safe, and that we had to stay vigilant if we wanted to survive.

The next morning, I woke up early, my mind still buzzing with thoughts and fears. I slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Alex, and went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee.

As I sat at the kitchen table, sipping my coffee and staring out the window, I couldn't help but wonder what our next move should be. We couldn't stay at the safe house forever, and we needed to figure out how to stay ahead of our attackers.

But before I could even begin to come up with a plan, my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching. I turned to see Jack walking into the kitchen, a serious expression on his face.

"Katie, we need to talk," he said, his voice low and urgent.

I could feel my heart racing as I braced myself for whatever he was about to say. It couldn't be good news.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"It's about Alex," he said, his eyes meeting mine. "I'm afraid that he might not be safe here."

My heart sank as his words sank in. We had thought that the safe house was secure, that we could finally relax and catch our breath. But now, it seemed like even that was no longer an option.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I've been monitoring the area, and I've noticed some suspicious activity," he explained. "I think that someone might be tracking us, and they might be closing in on our location."

My stomach churned as I realized the implications of his words. If we were being tracked, then there was no way we could stay at the safe house any longer. We had to leave, and we had to do it now.

"What do we do?" I asked, my voice shaking.

"We need to leave immediately," he said, his eyes meeting mine. "I have a contact who can get us out of the country, but we have to move fast. Can you get Alex ready?"

I nodded, feeling numb and scared. I knew that we had to leave, but I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of options, that our enemies were closing in on us, and that we might not make it out alive.

As I made my way back to the bedroom to wake up Alex and start packing our bags, I couldn't help but wonder what our future held, whether we would ever be truly safe again, and whether we would ever be able to put this nightmare behind us.

I woke Alex up and explained the situation to him, and he quickly got dressed and started packing his bags. We worked in silence, the only sound was the rustling of clothes and the zipping of suitcases. I could feel the tension in the air, the fear and uncertainty that hung over us like a dark cloud.

As we finished packing, Jack came into the room and handed us each a small backpack. "We're leaving in five minutes," he said. "Take only what you need and be ready to move fast."

We nodded, too scared to say anything, and followed him out of the room. We made our way to the garage, where a black SUV was waiting for us. Jack got behind the wheel, while Alex and I climbed into the backseat.

As we drove away from the safe house, I couldn't help but feel like we were being watched, like our every move was being monitored. I looked out the window, scanning the streets for any signs of danger.

Suddenly, the car swerved, and I heard the sound of glass breaking. I turned to look out the back window, and my heart sank as I saw two black SUVs speeding towards us.

"We've been compromised!" Jack yelled. "Hold on!"

He slammed his foot on the gas pedal, and the car lurched forward, swerving to avoid the incoming vehicles. The sound of gunfire filled the air, and I ducked down, my heart racing.

We sped through the streets, the other cars hot on our tail, their headlights shining in our rearview mirror. I could hear the sound of bullets hitting metal, and I knew that we were in grave danger.

"We have to lose them!" Jack yelled.

He swerved around a corner, narrowly avoiding a collision with a parked car. The other vehicles followed suit, their drivers clearly determined to capture us.

Suddenly, I heard a loud explosion, and the car jolted violently. I looked out the window and saw that one of the other vehicles had crashed into a nearby building, engulfing it in flames.

"Go! Go! Go!" Jack yelled.

He slammed his foot on the gas pedal, and we shot forward, leaving the burning vehicle behind. We sped through the city, weaving in and out of traffic, trying to stay one step ahead of our pursuers.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we pulled up to a small airstrip on the outskirts of the city. A private jet was waiting for us, its engines roaring.

"Get on board!" Jack yelled.

We ran up the stairs and climbed into the cabin, our hearts still pounding. As the plane took off, I looked out the window and saw the city disappearing below us. I knew that we had escaped this time, but I also knew that our enemies would never stop coming after us.

As the plane soared through the sky, I couldn't help but wonder what our future held, whether we would ever be truly safe again, and whether we would ever be able to put this nightmare behind us.

Jack took it upon himself to find out who was behind the whole attacks. The syndicates had a hand in all of this. The investigation got more serious and everyone who had a hand in the attack were caught.

Alex and I were so grateful to Jack for putting in all the energy and making it possible for us to be safe again. Everything went back to normal, or so I thought. I wished I could be more than a contract wife to Alex but it seemed it would be difficult to be more than that. We grew closer and spent more time together because we could only trust each other. Little did I know that not everyone was happy to see us together.
