The feeling of disappointment weighed on her, pressing into every part of her body. It was sharp, like a knife cutting through her skin, straight to her heart. Xanthe froze in shock at what she’d just learned.

Disappointed and embarrassed. That’s what she felt. Yet strangely, she wasn’t angry.

She knew he had been lying to her, but she hadn’t expected even his birthday on the resume to be part of the lie.

“Xanthe, I’m sorry,” Isis’ voice cut through her thoughts. “I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean to lie. I’m used to it, to lying, it’s like second nature to me, and I’m so, so sorry.”

She broke free from his hug, turning to look at the food she had prepared then she glanced at Ajax and Caius. The sympathy in their eyes, the guilt in Isis’, was almost too much.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she said, forcing a small smile. “It’s okay. It’s my fault too. I should have asked to be sure.”
