Chapter 4

作者: Ann Chase
The light in Gwyneth's eyes dimmed little by little until nothing remained.

Before she found out, Preston had planned to keep Selene somewhere else, safely out of sight. Now that Gwyneth knew, he had simply decided to bring her home instead.

That text had not been a request at all. It was a notice.

The abortion had already been scheduled for that afternoon.

Gwyneth did not go home. She went straight to the hospital.

As she lay in the waiting room before the procedure, Rebecca sent her a message.

Rebecca: [Gwen, Pres told me Selene is going to stay at your place after she's discharged. You're the reason her baby is gone. As a way of making amends, please treat her well and stop making things difficult for her.]

Gwyneth's eyes slowly reddened. It felt as though a knife were twisting in her chest.

Gwyneth: [You're this worried about her? What about me?]

Rebecca: [After all this time, do you really think I don't care about you? Gwen, do you have any idea how hard these past few years have been for Selene?]

Rebecca: [To keep you from finding out, she could only meet Pres in secret. Last year, on her birthday, she wanted to spend it alone with him, so the two of them had to sneak out at midnight to see a movie without you knowing.]

Rebecca: [Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, even New Year's... all of us spent those days with you first, then went to be with her afterward.]

Rebecca: [You have no idea how much she's had to endure. You killed her baby, and you can't even bring yourself to share a little of Preston's love with her. Are you really our good friend?]

Gwyneth wanted to reply that no, she was not. Not anymore. Never again.

But as she read the messages, she only felt drained.

It was no wonder Preston always claimed he had work to deal with after spending the holidays with her, work that kept him out until the following day.

He had been with Selene all along.

It was no wonder Selene had started wearing couture and carrying limited-edition bags, though Gwyneth could not remember exactly when it had begun.

The money had come from her own husband the entire time.

She had been such a fool. They had deceived her for so long, yet they still had the nerve to blame her.

A nurse pushed open the door, interrupting her thoughts. "Mrs. Gallagher, the surgery is about to begin.

"Would you like me to call Mr. Gallagher over? A family member needs to sign the consent form for the procedure."

Gwyneth blinked, caught off guard. "You know where he is?"

"Mr. Gallagher is in the inpatient ward. I saw him there. He's surrounded by a whole group of people, all fussing over some girl and running back and forth for her..."

The nurse trailed off when she noticed the look on Gwyneth's face and did not dare say anything more.

"No need. I'll sign it myself."

Gwyneth signed the consent form.

In the inpatient ward, her husband was watching over someone else while she was about to be wheeled into an operating room for an abortion.

It was almost funny. She was the one who was actually his wife.

Then again, it hardly mattered. Soon enough, she would not be.

"Mrs. Gallagher, we're about to administer the anesthesia. It might sting a little. Just bear with it..."

The cold needle pierced her skin, and Gwyneth's awareness began to fade.

"Do you think Mr. Gallagher even knows she's having surgery today?"

"Probably not. The day they found out she was pregnant, the two of them were over the moon. I have no idea why they'd suddenly decide to get rid of it."

"Isn't it obvious? Preston's been cheating. I just finished a D&C on his mistress this morning. Apparently, she's even one of Gwyneth's best friends."

"Something this serious, an abortion, and Preston doesn't even show up? That says everything. It proves the one he really loves is the mistress."

Tears slid slowly down Gwyneth's face as she sank into unconsciousness.

…

When she woke again, the surgery was already over. She touched her flat stomach and knew the baby was gone.

Her nose stung. Holding back her tears, she asked, "When can I be discharged?"

"Mrs. Gallagher, you're welcome to stay the night, or you can be discharged right now."

"I'll leave now."

Gwyneth got to her feet and walked out of the room. She had barely taken a few steps when she came face-to-face with Preston and his group.

"Arthur, don't scare me like this! Gwen, think! We need to find a way out!""Mom, is there a hammer in the house?""In the cabinet."Gwyneth turned and searched for it. She pulled out the hammer and began pounding on the door with all her strength. But no matter how hard she struck it, the door refused to give."Gwen, your father's not doing well!" Kelly was sobbing hard now. "What are we going to do? If your father dies, I won't want to live either!""Is anyone out there? Please! Someone open this door for us!"People kept passing by outside, but no one stopped to help.Just as Gwyneth was about to fall apart, a familiar voice came through the door.Preston called out, "Gwen, are you in there?"Then Julian's voice followed. "Gwyneth, are you all right? Are your parents okay?""Gwen, don't be afraid!" Preston shouted. "I'm coming in to get you right now!"She had never expected the two of them to show up at the exact same moment.Gwyneth cried out desperately, "I'm in here!

"I'm smiling because I found the perfect shop," Gwyneth said."Then I'm happy for you," Julian said."All right, my treat, then," Gwyneth offered. "Consider it payment for spending your whole day with me."The two of them ended up at a small tavern, where they ate and drank together.Gwyneth was in especially high spirits that night. She drank far too much and soon started acting out.No matter what Julian tried, he could not get her to slow down. In the end, he was the one who saw her safely home. What he failed to notice was that someone had been following them the entire day.And Preston was not the only one. There was also a woman.Preston had trailed Gwyneth all day, and watching her stay by Julian's side the entire time left him furious.Beneath that anger, however, lurked something closer to worry. He still had not seen any sign of Selene. She refused to answer his calls, and he had no idea what she was planning.Afraid something might happen to Gwyneth, Preston did no

Neither Julian nor Gwyneth spoke on the drive. Inside the cramped car, an awkward silence settled between them.Julian finally broke it. "What are your plans now that you're back in Minamton?""I've saved up a bit over the years. I'm thinking of opening a studio here," she replied."I've seen some of your earlier design work. It's excellent, and I think you'd be a great fit for our company. Have you really never considered joining us as a ceramics designer?" Julian asked. "With your talent, I'm sure you'd make a name for yourself in the field in no time."Gwyneth shook her head. "No, thank you."After everything she had been through, all she wanted was to stay close to her parents."I appreciate the offer, Mr. Lancaster, but I've decided to settle down in Minamton.""I understand."Since she wasn't interested, Julian didn't press the matter. He drove her the rest of the way to her parents' place.Kelly was already waiting downstairs. When she saw Gwyneth standing beside Julian

The corner of Julian's mouth curved into a handsome smile. "Then the honor's all mine.""So you two already know each other. Wonderful." Julian's father, Conrad Lancaster, brushed the dust from his clothes. "Well, that's enough excitement for one morning. How about we all go get some morning tea together?""I still need to pick up my mother."Gwyneth instinctively declined, but Conrad quickly cut in, "Let Jules drive you. He came by car."Julian readily agreed, "Sure. I've got time."A bad feeling suddenly crept over Gwyneth. This was the same old man who had offered to introduce his son to her earlier.Tall, handsome, well-off, and never dated anyone. That description could only have referred to Julian. But with so many people watching, and after Julian had just helped her, she could not bring herself to refuse. In the end, she simply nodded. "All right. Thank you, Mr. Lancaster."Gwyneth turned to follow Julian.Preston jumped in again. "Gwen, don't go with him. He's not a

No matter how hard they struck him or how loudly they shouted, Preston showed no sign of letting go.He held Gwyneth tightly, tears streaming down his face. "I won't let go again. Gwen, I love you. I can't live without you. I'm begging you, forgive me. Please don't leave me."Gwyneth could barely breathe in his grip. She shoved against him with all her strength. "Preston, let go of me, or I really will call the police!""Guys, what are you all standing around for? Get in there and help the Stone girl drive this bastard off!"A crowd of elderly men rushed forward, pulling and tugging at Preston as they tried to pry him away from Gwyneth. But no matter what they did, they couldn't move him an inch. One of the old men even got knocked to the ground in the scuffle."Ow! My old bones are falling apart!""Call the police! Hurry, call the police!""Report him for assault!"Just as the scene descended into chaos, a tall, lean figure strode over. "Dad, are you all right? What happened?

Preston had spent five hours on a plane and another hour driving just to get here. He had rushed through the night, desperate to see Gwyneth as soon as possible. He had arrived at her family's home just in time to see her leaving with Arthur, then followed them straight here. They had only been apart for a few days, yet he had missed her terribly. She clearly hadn't recovered well. Her face had grown thinner, and even beneath her makeup, her complexion remained pale.Remembering everything he had put her through, Preston's eyes filled with guilt. "Gwen."The moment Gwyneth saw him, her expression turned cold. "Why are you here?"Her mood, which had only just begun to improve, plunged straight back into the depths. She turned to leave, but Preston stepped in front of her and blocked her path. "Don't go. Give me a chance. Can we just talk this through properly?""Preston, we're already divorced. There's nothing left between us, and I have nothing to say to you. Get out of my way,
